Installed "handgun" safe in my truck today. **PICS**

We do it all the time. I don't feel comfortable leaving a firearm with an individual while I'm in my patrol car, writing them a citation. Having a CCW permit doesn't mean one is an angel.
You might want to be careful about that and run it past you dept's legal liaison. I know when I was trained we were taught the legal dangers of confiscating a civilians firearm without due cause. Not trusting a licensed gun owner with their weapon might not be seen as due cause if they pressed the issue.

The legal knows and approves.

If you have a firearm on you, I want to know about it. Required in NC. For officer's safety reasons, I am going to hold it during the traffic stop. Usually chat with the person afterwards. None have had a problem with it. Most understand.

PBP,

Does the safe you installed have an over-ride key in case the batteries fail? The Stack-On link doesn't specify.

Is there anyway you can send me a PM with which law enforcement office you work for there in NC.

I got curious after you stated that earlier today and decided to start digging a little. I could not find a definitive answer on the web so I started calling a couple lawyers in NC and presenting myself as someone who had been in a situation where I felt my rights had been violated by having my firearm removed during a traffic stop. (I have a lot of free time and long distance is free these days. :D)

All three I contacted (which I could actually get through to) stated that they felt this was not a legal practice and constituted a violation of illegal search and seizure statutes and other legal jargon.

Pretty much all three said I would not really be able to sue for monetary damages since I was not harmed financially in any way but they said a person could sue to have an officer disciplined and to assure that the law enforcement agency changed their policy and re-educated officers. It would be a "just for the principle" type case and I would have to cover initial legal fees which I could recoup in the suit. Of course I am speaking hypothetically since it never happened to me.

One of the guys I spoke to is going to send me some information and I would love to pass it along to your precinct. I am sure you would want them to stop this practice if it is illegal and we both know it would not be the first time an LE organization routinely did something illegal.

Great set up...my problem is that I have a sedan and only tight space under my seat...I'd need somekind of drawer set up that can telescope in and out, and would be extremely flat..and even then I wouldn't be able to bolt it to the floor unless I removed the seat first.

By the way in my State it is recommended to provide the CHL (CCW) with one's license when stopped. I've been stopped three times and I just handed my license and CHL together without explicitly declaring if was carrying or not ( I was). The Officers never even asked me if I was carrying, or made any comments either way.

So they're brazen enough to post a violation on their own website? I know some cocky SP, but that's ba**sy

I don't do it all the time. I know CCW are, for the most part, the good guys. However, officer's safety was drilled into my head like looking both ways before you cross the street. I'm most likely to ask for the pistol if you match the description of a wanted individual.

And just for fun, here's Texas' take on it: http://tlo2.tlc.state.tx.us/statutes/docs/GV/content/htm/gv.004.00.000411.00.htm#411.207.00

Hell, I'm getting sick of the job anyway. Time to move on to something bigger.

In both those cases you have presented it pretty clearly states either "in certain circumstances" or "reasonably believes it is necessary for the protection of the license holder, officer, or another individual."

The lawyers I spoke to did discuss that under certain circumstances it is legal, and I agree with that whole heartedly...but just a routine stop where the holder notifies the officer of his gun does not fall under those circumstances.

It didn't take me nearly as long to deiced that myself. I think it was mainly the fact that I am a coward at heart. :D

Certainly isn't cowardly. I enjoy the company of my wife more than getting puked on by a drunk. Call me crazy.

If it wasn't asking for trouble "Coward with a Seecamp" would make a classy bumper sticker. ;)

Here is a pic of my truck gun safely nestled into it high density foam cradle. I know it looks upside down but that is the most natural position for my to grasp it from sitting in the drivers seat. :)

Love your installs, they're very clean.

I had to scratch my head for a minute - the driver's seat is on the other side! :o

That came out very clean looking. I can't even see the floor in the back of my truck. Too many sweatshirts, raincoats, targets and tools. After seeing how neat yours is I really need to clean the back of mine out.:o

(I do construction and carry a couple of extra changes of clothes forinclement weather)

That would be a good thing. The safe would be even more hidden. :)

Just curious.... What is your truck?

Dodge, Ford, Chevy? Doesnt look like an extended cab whichever it is...
It is a Ford F-150 regular cab. All the new Fords have the split door with the storage area behind the seats.

Hey PBP - be careful with that electronic keypad on your new strongbox. I have the same locking device on my strongbox, but I have the version where the door is vertical, not horizontal.

Regardless, I installed the box about a week ago and was very happy with it. Went to the range yesterday, went home and cleaned the pistols. Walked to the strongbox and unbeknown to me, I picked up a bunch of static electricity from the carpet on the way. Went to type in the combo on the keypad and *zap* - I fried the electronics with static electricity.

Now I have a totally nonfunctional keypad, and I need to use the backup key as primary entry.:mad:

This is less of a concern for you since you usually ground yourself by touching the door on the way into your vehicle, but I thought I would give you a heads up so you don't end up with a partially useless strong box. :barf:
