If you were going to get ONLY 1 rifle...

i think the problem here is many are posting there favorite rifle. I have favorites too but if i had to go down to only one caliber to hunt everything in the US it wouldnt be my favorite deer rifle. I think that when you factor in killing power, recoil, accuracy, cost and availability of ammo and the versitility to load it up or down for differnt applications or buy ammo for differnt applications over the counter the 06 win hands down. Theres good reason that its been the best selling rifle caliber in the country for many decades. It just plain works. 243s and 25s have there place and the mags are great for really big stuff and long range but the 06 is a gun that i can grab for ANY hunting situation and not make a mistake in my choise.
 
If I could only have one rifle I would go with a Savage model 10 in .308. Would do everything I need done in North America. Plus I could get ammo most anywhere and there is also surplus that I could shoot.

I didn't post my favorite but one I consider best all around for nearly every contingency. Defense gun on the homestead, quick and easy to bring to bear in dense brush, powerful enough to kill everything in North America and just enough scope to get me a good honest 300 yard shot at game or boogerman. I reload so I can load up or down and use specific bullets depending on what I want to use the gun for, paper and coyotes to moose and bear.
 
Assuming a long term survival situation.

Mauser military grade action. Preminum barrell. Carbon fiber stock. Parkerize the barrell and action. Caliber would be 308. Standard military round.

Top with a good scope and backup express sites.
