If you were going to get ONLY 1 rifle...

Just so long as your target doesn't destinigrate on impact, I wouldn't worry about being too "brutal" by choosing too large of a calibre. You are shooting the animal after all...

I think that this will do just fine.

A bolt action 30-06.

I would get a 22" barrel, pretty wooden stock, and put a 2.5X8 Leupold VXIII on it. I would insist that it weigh not over 7.25 lb with scope, mount, sling, and loaded. Seven pounds would be even better.
You carry a rifle more than you shoot it, and in the mountains every ounce counts.

I would settle on 1.5 MOA with full power loads, but think today's barrels and rifles could get about MOA.

Swede carbine 6.5X55. Synthetic stock? Ok, I'd refinish the wooden stock with a couple of coats of epoxy and call it good.

I could be happy with a Marlin 336 or 1895 with a 18.5" - 22" barrel. Synthetic? Bolt action? If I could only have one rifle, it wouldn't have either of those traits.

The real problem with this thread is that once a person buys his first rifle, there is no chance that they will not buy another! HaHa:)

Easy, short action, 18.5" sporter barrel, stainless .243 with decent wood or laminate stock. Not real brand specific as there are all sorts of quality, accurate rifles being made today by lots of manufactures. I'd handle as many as I could get ahold of and go from.

As a matter of fact, I built this gun, almost. It's a long action instead and it's not all stainless but it's what I had so I went with it. As for will I ever buy another rifle? Doubt it but if I do it will only be to get a short action and all stainless. Then this one will go down the road. I don't want or need more than one.

Scope would be a Redfield 3-9x. Undesided on the thumbhole as I've yetto get this gun in the field. In some ways it's great, no so much in others.

I don't know about "dream" rifle, but my go to hunting rifle is a Remington Model Seven in .308. It started out in a wood stock, but I replaced the stock with an H.S. Precision sporter. Rifle wears a Leupold compact 2-7X.

Why? I like the short action carbine length setup and light weight for woods carry. .308 is a very common round with the power of .30 caliber in a small package. I'd probably be as happy with a 7mm08, but there is more ammo selection for the .308.

If your talking "My Dream" a 300 Weatherby, but for cost a Russion M44 in 7.62x54 however a 700 in 30/06 oh! Woops! I already have those! How about a Circut Judge .45 LC / .410 all around fun from light small game to anything in North America you would want to kill! From game to home intruders.:D Woops the Judge is a revolver not a bolt! Oh well!

Browning BAR Safari II. Already have it in .270, .30-06, and .300 Win Mag. I like the .300 best. I know they are heavier than some, but just beautiful rifles, good craftsmenship and fun to shoot.
