If you only had $400 for ccw...

I would probably look around for a used Sig 225, 232 or 230. A used Walther PP or PPK would also be a good choice...

When I used to CCA I liked a nice heavy double action trigger.

I would save another 400 and have some choices.

Wow! That sounds SO wise.

And I thought all those Colts, Smith & Wesson's, CZ's, Charters, and Rugers I'd bought for less than $400.00 would do the job.

Edited to add pictures.

Each less than $400, fairly recently...a couple less than $300.00.

Shows what I know. ;)

The number one gun purchased by my CHL students (including some newbies) over the past 18 months has been Ruger LCR in 38+P.

No need to save longer, $400 - $450 will buy you a plenty decent gun. Not just an ok gun, but an outright good gun. Both my Cougar and my 5906 came in under $400.

Gun, belt, holster(s) spare mags or speed loaders/speed strips/moonclips, ammo holder, self-defense ammo, practice ammo and testing ammo

$400 just enough to get the gun.

Used Glock or a used S&W revolver from J&G Sales...or continue saving and get something else.

I think the SR9c is the clear conceal-carry winner in that price range. However, saving just another 50-100 would net you a M&P subcompact, which I believe is a better firearm. YMMV. :)

[So what your saying is your life is only worth $400]

A strange comment. There are a lot of folks who are hurting financially today, but want the best handgun, for their protection, they can afford.
He did not say his life was worth only $400. In fact some guns costing twice that are no reliable out of the box.

As it turns out a reliable handgun can be bought for that amount or less. Some recommendations have been made.
One of the most reliable guns available in SA is the Makarov. They can be purchased for around $250. One may not like the cartridge, but it will do the job.

A .38 Spl such as the Ruger SP 101 can probably be had for around $400 used.

CZ-83...You can buy a new model for $400

.380acp caliber DA Pistol with 12+1 capacity.....Slightly heavier, but Awesome shooters...Can shoot any .380 ammo without problems...CZ quality.

I have one and feed it only Federal Hydra Shock JHP....AWESOME.

A real nice pre-owned Police Trade-ins pending condition are from $250 - $300....on gunbroker.com

any taurus (except maybe the 1911), a holster, and a box of self defense ammo would be about $400. next paycheck get practice ammo and extra mags. for the record, my taurus (24/7 pro .45)has exceptional accuracy and reliability. i trust my life with it.

Great post

Disregard the smarty pants, I think it is a great question!

LCP, Jframe, LCR, SP101, Colt D frame if one was lucky! Any of those would be great. I have a 642 which is fantastic. I also have an SP101 which may be my favorite gun of all time. It is a bit heavy if it were going to be carried all the time. I would probably go get me a 442 and be done. LCPs are awesome as well. I'd like to have one of these. I have seen some lightly used Colt Agents for around $400. These have aluminum frames and hold 6 instead of the 5 for the Js, LCRs, and SPs. They are a bit larger but shoot and carry well. I also have a Makarov that I picked up for $180. It is an awesome shooter but a bit large for EDC.

Good luck

I would reccomend the Springfield XD, i found my full frame in .45 used in great condition for 375... paid about the same for the Ruger LCR in .38 +P new... Both are great

I'll throw another vote in for the CZ 82. It can be had for about $220, is very well made, good sights and trigger, accurate and easy to shoot and maintain. Spend the extra cash on ammo, good holster, gun belt and a spare mag or 2.

The CZ 82 is a great value right now and you's be hard pressed to find any negative reviews or arguments against it. It really is a great "budget friendly" defense pistol.

If I was on a limited budget for gun, holster, belt, ammo and so on, my first choice would be the CZ 82. If my gun budget was $400 and I could put more money into ammo, belt, holster etc... I'd probably go for a used Glock, XD or M&P, because of availability and popularity.

My SR9c was right at 400. Works well for me. Can use its 10 or SR9 17 round mags with the adapter, so capacity is never an issue.
