If you could only own one handgun . . . .

I have under necessity actualy carried a TC concealed. With an 8 Inch barrel in 45/70 it is fairly easy. It is a little tougher with a 14 inch scoped but it can be accomplished. For home defense I would opt for a shotgun. There was no real stipulation to it would be my only gun. A 3inch 410 shell with buckshot would be another option if it were my only gun. It is not a combat style gun but that was not the question. It is my choice if I could have only one.

:):):) That's a good one! But seriously, my only point is that there are a host of handguns that offer multiple shots for self-defense duties, yet are powerful enough to hunt big game with and are compact enough for practical concealed carry. The owning one handgun for every possible contingency stipulation, imo, presupposes choosing one that best covers "all the bases".
But, all that said, the choice of a single shot pistol as you (and poster oneounceload) opted for is an interesting one. As you noted, it is possible, I suppose, to carry a Contender concealed and having multiple barrels/calibers does offer certain advantages, particularly if you throw rimfire ammunition into the mix. And, when you consider a wilderness survival situation, the Contender's simplicity of construction and robust parts are undeniable advantages. The fact that a Contender is easily scoped (and "unscoped") is another important asset that makes it a viable one handgun candidate.
I think where you live might be a big factor in picking one handgun for every situation. A person living in, say, inter-city Detroit or Chicago, will probably have far different needs than would a person residing in a more rural setting. All the factors that have to be taken into consideration when forced (theoretically, thankfully) to pick only one firearm of a certain genre always makes the exercise an intriguing one.

Terrible choice to have to make. But, if forced to, it would be a light, reliable, polymer hi cap pistol that I shoot well. Hey, that kinda sounds like my S&W M&P 9 compact. Yeah, that's the ticket. :D

If I could only own a single handgun that had to do everything I'd pick a stainless steel .357Magnum double action revolver with adjustable sights and a 4" barrel.
