If Someone Handed You $1,000...

I'm just trying to see if there's better options for the money.
All you get with this type of question is a list of other people's favorites.
None of them will be the right choice for you.

Decide what you need the gun to do, and choose the cartridge based on those requirements.

Then find a gun that feels good to you

Asking others is really no better than looking at catalogs

I can't speak to the HK but it looks great w/great reputation.

If you wanted a great all-around gun, I'd go Sig 226/227, whichever caliber you prefer. Tacops maybe. I wouldn't enjoy carrying that large of a gun for CCW but many folks do and possible if you could only have one gun. Pretty comparable in size to HK I think.

If you'd like a true combo gun for night stand, woods, car, and CCW, then I'd save some cash and go with a hybrid of sorts in a glock 26/27, whichever caliber you prefer. I'd buy a few of their optional, higher capacity 24-33rd mags. To go with it. It turns a small CCW into a semi-auto "Uzi" in seconds. That's assuming you don't live in a state that dictates how many rds you will always need to defend you and your family against a few home invaders

@kmglock - I would have agreed pre gen 4. I have still yet to buy one because of the terrible things I've heard in the last few years.

Why? The recent Gen 4 Glock 19s are fine, and I suspect 98% (SWAG) of all non-Internet Gen 4 Glock 19s also run fine. My 2/2015 product G-19 has functioned 100% through 1000+ rounds so far. Reloads, factory, aluminum case, heavy bullets, light bullets, Ranger +P+ and 9mm NATO FMJ. I had the same reservations initially but dove in anyway. My experience with Glock CS was also very positive in the past, so I knew they'd handle it if there were issues.

Which I guess leads me to answer, Glock 19, Gen 4. Runner up might be something in a .40-caliber, but until I get some hands-on experience I'll stay with the 9mm Glocks. To be honest, if somebody told me was going to get a random pistol and my task was to take it out of the box and shoot 1000 rounds, I'd really hope I was about to be handed a 9mm Glock.

Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casull

That's a powerful weapon. My only concern with this and some of the other more esoteric weapons selected is that it may, someday, be difficult to find ammo. (If your handload, less of a problem, but even then it could be difficult to get brass.)

I would buy the standard size Sphinx when it comes out as my Compact SDP needs company and I really like the pistols they make.

Cobra 380. Spend the rest on a TV..

Erm ... That would be harsher punishment for parole violators
And world peace

If someone handed me a grand right now,
a SIG 220 in 10mm would be in my pistol safe as fast as I could make it happen ;)

The ONLY downside to that pistol is the lousy small-capacity 8-rd mag.
Frankly, its why I have a Glock 20sf instead...
as when hunting wild boar, 17+1 is a comfort on the hip
(15-rd mag with a +2 extension, and Yeah, it Works!)

>Edit: maybe a better way to word this would be... Let's say you were drafted into the Marines tomorrow and were going be fighting in Afghanistan. They tell you that you can bring any handgun that you want. What would you bring?<

I'd buy another CZ p01. It would only cost about $550, but it's gone through some of the most rigorous testing of any handgun out there. You could say the same about the Beretta M9, but I think those are bigger and heavier than neccesary for the capability given.

I have no idea what I would get,,,

I have no idea what I would get,,,
If you would have said "new revolver",,,
The answer would be easy with no hesitation.

I already own what I believed to be one of the finest semi's out there,,,
At the time I bought it I did have a bit over a grand saved up.

Since the pistol was only $495.00,,,
I bought it and it's little sister to boot,,,
Before tax the price on the guns was $1,090.00.

CZ-75B in 9mm and CZ-75B Kadet in .22 LR.

There are fancier pistols out there,,,
And there are certainly some that cost more,,,
But for overall performance these are very hard to beat.
