If someone gave you $1000.00 and said go buy a ccw...

Well I spent about $900 and bought a Ruger 357 LCR and a Smith and Wesson Bodyguard 380. I really needed them as I only have 23 other handguns. All kidding aside they are both great carry guns.

Springfield EMP,,,

I had the opportunity to fire several mags through one a while back,,,
I was very impressed with every aspect of the gun.

I would never buy one though,,,
It's retail price is right around a Grand,,,
There are too many other fine pistols out there for lots less.

But if someone gave me a thousand dollar bill,,,
That's the pistol I would splurge on.

Why?,,,
Because I like it.

I'm actually trying to get something smaller then my xd service... I love it, but carrying a fullsize is getting a little tiresome
Ah, finally :).
I knew that if I read two pages worth of posts, I would get there.
I was going to ask what you own currently, and what you really like. What we own or want is very biased, and largely irrelevant.

Something smaller/lighter than a 30 oz (empty) XD. Okay.

I can only share my experiences, which may or may not be worth anything to you. FWIW, I am 50+, 5'9", 150# and carry every day, wherever and whenever legal to do so.

I have bought, carried and sold a fair number of handguns since getting my CHL (without an actual count, I'm going to say 20-30). The reason I kept selling one and buying another is that many of them just did not do it for me, for one reason or other. That includes two Glocks, half a dozen J-frames, two EMPs, and many others.

I own a few carry handguns these days, and carry each, depending upon weather and dress.

The one I carry far more than anything else (and the one I would keep if I only had one handgun) is the Kahr P45. Four inch barrel, 18.5 ounces empty, thin single stack, seven rounds of .45 acp, great trigger, simple, dead reliable, accurate...it is the closest thing to a perfect CCW weapon I have found. I bought mine lightly used, and that may have been the best $500 I've ever spent (on a handgun, anyway).

My favorite (and the one I would carry if they had never invented the P45) is an alloy framed Commander sized 1911. I'm a 1911 guy, and will readily admit to it. I shoot a 1911 better than anything else. But an alloy 1911 weighs 10 ounces more, mine costs 2x what the Kahr did, and is pretty enough that when I carry it, I worry "just a little bit" about putting a scratch or ding in it. Not enough to keep me from carrying it, but enough to keep me from doing so every day. That and the extra ten ounces...

The one that I carried for three plus years (and up until two years ago was my favorite CCW pistol) is my Kahr PM9. If you think that pocket carry is for you, and you don't trust the .380 cartridge, the PM9 is worth a look. Mine was also bought used for about $500.

Note that I am not (necessarily) trying to spend your entire $1000 at one shot. It is more important to find something that really suits you.

Depending on what and how much you shoot, spending a portion of that $1000 on a reloading set-up may bring you a lot of enjoyment...and afford you the ability to shoot a lot more. It's worked for a lot of us.

Well i bought a Taurus pro .45 compact, ran me less then $400.

I'm spending the rest on ammo.

I bought it because it works with the majority of my accessories.

And I like it.

What would you get and why? My wife is ever so graciously letting me spend some of my hard earned money on a new weapon.

I would budget for gun, appropriate belt, holster, extra magazines or speed loaders/speed strips, carriers for same, practice ammo, carry ammo, and maybe a class if I hadn't had one yet.

Which is to say, there's a lot more expense than just getting a gun. For the hypothetical $1000 I wouldn't be getting the shinyest bauble in the gun case, and I'd end up a lot better prepared than someone who did.

Another four or five CZ82s with extra mags and ammo. Solid built pistols at a cheap ($170) price. The newer Mak ammo power factors at 123, 125 is USPSA minor and most 115gr 9mm PF around 129, so it's not a weakling, much better than 380 or 38Spl loads. 13 round mags should be enough. Steel frame so recoil isn't horrible and the gun holds up to practice. If I do have the defend myself I'm not crying about a thousand dollar gun lost to the evidence locker or I'm not left defenseless and if something should break all my gear works with my 2nd or 3rd gun.

Yea I like the nice high dollar pistols but for CC I'm happy with a mil sup pistol thats not so pretty with descent power and capacity and doesn't break the bank and won't leave me in a puddle of tears if it should go missing.

I would go to my lgs and buy a Walther PPS- imo, the finest CCW tool out there at any price point. And with the leftover cash, buy a Ruger LCP for pocket duty.

I would tell them I have the CCW that has served me well for years and I only need one. I don't carry different CCW's.

If I didn't have a gun (or was making a recommendation to someone who didn't), I'd say a Glock 19, about 10 mags, and a case of ammo.

If I already had a pistol for CCW, I'd say a training class and a case of ammo.

what i carry now

A springfield armory loaded stainless .45acp a good shoulder rig. (back problems wearing a belt increases the pain). the rest on mags and ammo
