I'm actually trying to get something smaller then my xd service... I love it, but carrying a fullsize is getting a little tiresome
Ah, finally
.
I knew that if I read two pages worth of posts, I would get there.
I was going to ask what you own currently, and what you really like. What
we own or want is very biased, and largely irrelevant.
Something smaller/lighter than a 30 oz (empty) XD. Okay.
I can only share my experiences, which may or may not be worth anything to you. FWIW, I am 50+, 5'9", 150# and carry every day, wherever and whenever legal to do so.
I have bought, carried and sold a fair number of handguns since getting my CHL (without an actual count, I'm going to say 20-30). The reason I kept selling one and buying another is that many of them just did not do it for me, for one reason or other. That includes two Glocks, half a dozen J-frames, two EMPs, and many others.
I own a few carry handguns these days, and carry each, depending upon weather and dress.
The one I carry far more than anything else (and the one I would keep if I only had one handgun) is the Kahr P45. Four inch barrel, 18.5 ounces empty, thin single stack, seven rounds of .45 acp, great trigger, simple, dead reliable, accurate...it is the closest thing to a perfect CCW weapon I have found. I bought mine lightly used, and that may have been the best $500 I've ever spent (on a handgun, anyway).
My favorite (and the one I would carry if they had never invented the P45) is an alloy framed Commander sized 1911. I'm a 1911 guy, and will readily admit to it. I shoot a 1911 better than anything else. But an alloy 1911 weighs 10 ounces more, mine costs 2x what the Kahr did, and is pretty enough that when I carry it, I worry "just a little bit" about putting a scratch or ding in it. Not enough to keep me from carrying it, but enough to keep me from doing so every day. That and the extra ten ounces...
The one that I carried for three plus years (and up until two years ago was my favorite CCW pistol) is my Kahr PM9. If you think that pocket carry is for you, and you don't trust the .380 cartridge, the PM9 is worth a look. Mine was also bought used for about $500.
Note that I am not (necessarily) trying to spend your entire $1000 at one shot. It is more important to find something that really suits you.
Depending on what and how much you shoot, spending a portion of that $1000 on a reloading set-up may bring you a lot of enjoyment...and afford you the ability to shoot a lot more. It's worked for a lot of us.
