If not hollow-points, then what ammo for SD?

The brands I see most are S&B, Magtech, Remington, Fiocchi, Barnaul, off the top of my head. It may be that there is an obscure gun shop somewhere that stocks Federal, but I don't remember seeing it.

I also think there is a bit more choice in hunting longarm ammo, than SD.

I've not looked so far, as I've been running around like a blue-**sed fly, but in March I hope to do some window shopping!

Additionally, from what I can work out from cross-referencing a 7 year out of date translated version of the law and a gibberish G**gle translated version, hollowpoints, tracer, armour-piercing, explosive and incendiary rounds are the prohibited ammunition types here.

So the likes of soft-points and similar moderately expanding types should be OK.

FMJ Rounds have being used effectively for the last 100 years including two world wars. A hit in the right place form a 9mm FMJ round will do the same job as any other 9mm round.

PS. I know about the the Hague Convention and the use of expanding ammo by the military.

^ That. Not long ago I posted a video of an actual shooting after a bank robbery in our south eastern coast. Bandit took two hits with 9mm FMJ, one of them close enough to the heart. Went down like a sack of potatoes.

Hi!

I´m a police officer from Austria. Our duty guns are Glock 17´s with Fiocchi and S&B 100grs. soft points. We are not allowed to carry hollow points, because in our country everybody thinks that hollow points are mean killer bullets...
The police here isn´t involved in many gun fights, but in several shootings, the soft point bullets were very effective.

Greetings

A colleague from Spain here. Same case as ours. Over here, the law says something like "specially authorized agencies or specialties". That means that for the bulk of the two agencies that operate at national level, hollow points are a no-no, however, the tactical units are allowed to use them and actually carry them, in their Glock 17s or Sig-Sauers. Funny enough is that the local police departments (those that belong to municipalities) are also entitled to issue them to their officers, as the decision depends on the person in that municipality who is in charge of running the police logistics and supplies. And they do carry HP in a lot of cases.

It seems that the authorities, all across Europe, are more concerned about the person being shot (the bad guy) rather than on the one defending himself or others (the policeman) or innocent bystanders.

BTW, Pond, this is the Remington ammo I talked about before:

As you see, it's not fully jacketed, and the nose is truncated. I wanna run some "homemade tests" with some water plastic bottles (5 liters or so), and wet newspapers inside them, just to see what happens. And no, ballistic gel is not handy for me :D.

Hornady Critical Defense ammo is great stuff, consistant expansion, great penetration. Thats what most retired LEOs carry in NJ. Would carry still even if not for the fuss over hollow points. :D

@nordeste

I know what you mean. In Austria the physical health of the bad guys is FAR more important than the well-being of the police officers.

If the responsibes would find out that expanding bullets are better for the bad guys, we would have those bullets tomorrow in our duty guns.
But for the personal safety of the officers is no money available.

It´s truly a shame here.......

@pond
Our tactical unit "Cobra" has the Fiocchi EMB as their duty ammo. What I´ve heard so far, they are pretty comfortable with them.
Perhaps you can get them!?

P.S. sorry for my bad english, I hope you understand what I mean

G-C:

Your english is fine , and infinitely better than my Deutsch!! Likewise for Nordeste and my Castellano!!

I will ask if my local stockist has Fiocchi EMB rounds and see if I can have a look at some when I next go to there!

Except for 9mm I cast all of my bullets, (I buy the same remington's the Spanish guy gets, 12.99 per 50...ick) I can hot load .44 spec. and have a hollow pointed 358156 mold @ 1100 or 1200fps, dont own a chrono. I have a hollowpoint 454190 that I haven't tried in a revolver, but know it blows up @ around 1300fps in water jugs. I will be getting one of my 32/20 molds hollow pointed and will try for 1200fps in an OP....I do go on huh?...Anyway I usually load a full WC in another OP I own or a M60 Smith for bedside defense at subsonic speeds or sometimes I just have a 1911 with 230gr reloads. When I carry it's usually a Colt Cobra with the same WC load.

Hornady Critical Defense which is the same as Zombie Max by Hornady. It's a hollowpoint with a polymer ball to allow it to penetrate clothing without getting clogged up. Much Cor Bon.
