I Guess I was Naive in Thinking that all Police Officers were Excellent Shots.

I would think that a police department wouldn't hire someone who had to take 2 attempts at their drivers test? And if so they would get them more practice. So why not let someone who cant make their pistol qualifications have more practice time.

-c/Kord!

Excuse me, but the idea of private citizen CCW is constantly under attack by those who claim permit holders don't measure up (and apparently can NEVER measure up in some people's eyes).

Because some are not qualified (in some cases) NO private citizens should carry. I wish I had a dime every time I've heard some Police Chief express that sacred opinion.

Fed up with it. Another damn double standard.

Make no mistake. I hold LEO in high regard in general and thank them for their service.

But some are bozos.

I would add that not just most cops, but most people are notoriously poor shots, when you move off the square range.

My first fire fight was an eye opener for sure when it comes to combat marksmanship. I shoots high expert on the KD course, yet I have poured quite a few more well aimed shots down range at people who were moving and shoot back than I have actually hit.

I actually think burst seems to help also; a 240 or M16 firing a burst tends to have a higher change of hitting.

1 Not all law enforcement officers are good shots. Some dont practice enough. Some dont care because they think it wont happen to me ..I wont have to use it. And amazingly enough.. some who are in Law Enforcement would rather not carry a gun and be like the "Bobbies" in the United Kingdom.
If you are the Tackleberry type and you enjoy guns and weapons in most departments and agencies you are made fun of and ostricised.

2. There are LEO's that dont exercise or train as much as they would like. Well the strange shifts, the "quick grab" of something to eat, the long hours dont lend a helping hand in the case of getting to the gym and staying fit.

3. If I told a person you had to buy a computer a year for work and it had to be a good one most people would say whoa wait a minuite "that is a lot of money.. the company should pay for that. So the statement that low payed LEO's should suck it up and pay for practice ammo is plain wrong. Most people should be going to there town or municipality and asking "Do our guys get some practice ammo in the budget?"

My qualifications are outdoors rain snow or shine... Last qualification it was raining HARD... and was about 40 degrees .. so cold and raw. 4 times a year. I did well like I always try to do.

Just like in most jobs, some do it well ... some dont care and some just dont know any better. I drove a fork truck in a warehouse to put myself through college. We had guys that would crash.. damage freight and be dangerous to themselves and others. So they didnt use the tool safely and efficiently.
We had a couple guys who could thread a needle with a fork truck.. same same.

Skillsets need to be trained. Skillsets need to be practiced. Shooting a firearm is a skillset. Driving is a skillset that all of us take for granted. We do it everyday. We just dont realize that we have trained constantly.

Yes all LEO's should practice. The shooters with poor basic skills should shoot more.

Part of the problem is the pistol. I find myself shooting more accurately with the Sigs and the HKs then the Glocks. Some weapons just seem easier to fire.

I think the trigger pull on the Glocks, especially with the added springs, contributes to a lack of marksmanship.

Gee, how do folks win high level matches with Glocks?

Training and practice.

LEO friends of mine qualify 4 times a year. Should CHLs and CCW types qualify four times a year? And they never do any force on force training at all.

Gee, how do folks win high level matches with Glocks?

Most use 1911's,,,,

If all of you here are SO concerned about LEO's being excellent shots,,,,have you invited a LEO to the range to practice with you and pay for their ammo???? Just a thought.

"Gee, how do folks win high level matches with Glocks?"

The guys in competition utilize the long-slide versions which come with a 3.5 lb trigger pull. Usually they will swap in an aftermarket barrel and have a few other tricks.

The police use regular Glocks with no aftermarket tricks and heavier trigger pulls. Some departments use trigger pulls up to 12 pounds.

The guys with the 1911s are using single action with a light trigger pull. Police departments have successfully fielded the 1911 only after extensive custom work. The Marines specops were using a heavily modified Kimber. The FBI swat teams use a heavily customized 1911. I havent seen any departments simply pull a regular version 1911 out of a box and make it their pistol.

The Sig and the HK are the only pistols I know of that are very accurate right out of the box, reliable and can be fielded without any custom work.

The HK seems like the ultimate weapon as it combines Glock toughness with Sig accuracy. The HK doesnt require cleaning to fire accurately (HK says 5000 rounds before the first cleaning). Unfortunately, the USP is not within most department's budgets. Funny, how the Air Marshalls get Sigs where as the pilots get USPs. The difference is that the pilots are paying for theirs. So essentially they are saying price dependent Sig, price independent HK.

The Marines specops were using a heavily modified Kimber.

That was Det 1, Actual Marine Special Ops in the Marine Special Ops Battalion have a mix USMC made MEU-SOC 45s and some of the MSOC/MSOTs are now deploying with M9s.

"Part of the problem is the pistol."

I disagree. I have yet to witness an excellent shooter shoot poorly or a poor shooter shoot excellently because of what pistol they were shooting. Can incremental differences be observed? Sure, but that is not what we are discussing.

All said and done, its just more evidence you need to arm yourself and protect yourself, because we all know you cant depend on the goverment and its hired help when you really it.

If you are able to post on this thread then you have depended on us for quite some time. Imagine the world without the cops, even the poor shooting ones.

I think you can rely on the police in urban areas where they are minutes away, but in more rural areas you need to rely on yourself and having a pistol is a need.

A Glock fits that description rather well, as do many of the S&W autos, Rugers, etc. Many "high-level matches" have been won with box-stock Glocks and probably other makes as well.

Couldn't agree with you more, I even agree that I would rely on myself within urban areas. I was referring more to the deterrent factor that LEOs provide, not the reactionary actions. Sometimes were very similar to paddle locks, we just keep honest people honest.

Personal responsibility extends to LEOs the same as it does to everyone else. If you were concerned your neighbor with a CCW was a terrible shot and shouldn't carry a gun would you pay for his practice?

Still would be a nice and appreciated gesture, still free next weekend:D

to start off i am a LEO. and its true not all cops tend to care about their shooting abilities. i do know that there is no "fudging" qualifications on my department. that doesn't acount for every other department. as far as shooters go we are probably a little higher percentage wise on who takes the time to shoot over the normal population just due to the fact that some do train on their own for the time it may be needed, and of course just the reason they give us guns attracts some people to the job. but obviouosly the people on this site are shooters and probably on average are better shots than a lot of cops. but we do have a LOT of really excellent shots. and for the record i have been in a gun fight, and all my shots struck the bad guy.
