I got denied trying to buy a handgun

These days delays sometimes occur just because of local staffing. Here in VA, the actual NICS check is run by the state police. Apparently there are multiple vacancies amongst the folks who actually run the checks, and with the massive state budget shortfalls, there is a hiring freeze on replacements.

On busy days, especially weekends, there may only be two people manning the NICS desk for the entire state. Folks get delayed simply because they cannot get all the checks run before the end of the day. Most local gun shops in my area have signs up alerting everyone to the problem and letting them know delays are pretty common.

I just bought two rifles last month and had no problems what so ever. I'm planning on buying a .40 cal soon so here is my question. Are these delays happening mostly on handgun purchases or for any firearm? This has my curiosity up a little.

I have the same name as an uncle who was a bad boy in his youth.
The first few long arms I bought were all delayed as you described. I always checked out OK after a few days. Even now, every once in a while I get a delay; if that's the price we pay to try and keep guns out of the wrong hands, I'm willing to pay it.

(i didn't read all of the responses...)

2 things that i have run into in the past (mainly with credit reports):

#1 - make sure you use your full name whenever possible. middle initials, or the lack of a middle name, can leave "concerns" that may lead to delays

#2 - sticking with the theme of full names, make sure to indicate if you are a "Jr" or "the II" or something like that. i have all sorts of stuff (both good and bad) from my father's credit history that finds its way onto my credit report!

In Nebraska you get a "good guy" card from the sheriff's office. No background checks after that, just walk in, plunk down your money, check the boxes, sign your name and off you go with your new gun in hand.

thats why you got delayed misdemanor charge. They have to look into that to make sure it wasnt something that would keep you from buying a gun. You may want to get a UPIN it keep you from getting delayed again.

And guys, please learn the correct terminology. DELAYED is not the same as DENIED. Big difference.

Here in Texas, I used to be delayed almost every purchase and couldn't figure out why. Then I got my CHL and that bypasses the whole check system. Just sign and fly, as they say.

And as far as the dealer holding paid guns until the buyer was ready to pick them up, I don't think I would want the responsibility of storing someone's guns for a couple of months. Not to mention the book status of said guns.

Storing customers guns is part of doing business. I have insurance on any firearm in my possession. 90% of my customers pick up within two days of the gun arriving.

Even if the customer gets a "delay", I can hand him the gun after three business days.

Not sure what you mean by this.
Gun arrives, gets logged in as an acquisition.
Gun leaves, gets logged out as a disposition.

Doesn't matter if it's on the books for one hour or ten years.

.

I got delayed every single time Ive bought a gun except for the very first time when I bought a ruger 10/22 and then just three days ago when I bought a kahr cw45. In between then I must have bought at least 6 or seven guns and got delayed every time. I got lucky this last time though.:)
