One way to check pressure is to clamp the rifle's forend upside-down, horizontally in a vise, then hang a weight off the barrel, just beyond the forend. A small wedge could then be placed in the channel to hold that amount of pressure.
Another way would be to clamp the rifle horizontally, but upright, in a vise and pull up on the barrel near the end of the forend with a Fisherman's DeLiar spring scale and use a wedge to hold that pressure.
You could either mark the wedge and push it in to that mark, or tape it in place prior to placing bedding compound to create the pad.
i hear ya, i thought id have my taxes back two weeks ago. was gonna get the scope mounted and try it all out. i head out for another two week trip today. money will be in my acct. tomorrow
Maybe wbl is starting to have withdrawl symptoms?
I went on ahead and made a big leap for me , I bedded the action of my 270 MkII ( my first time to ever bed a stock btw) with slow setting JB weld. I cleaned the metal with acetone, then waxed the action and barrel up really good with some cheapie car wax, buffed it off to a shine then hit it again with another coat of wax but just left the 2nd coat on the action unbuffed. After I let it cure for 24 hours, it took a couple of good whacks with my hand, but it all broke free. I bedded the front action screw mounting area as well as the rear screw mounting area but left the center screw alone.
Im supposed to go out this coming Wednesday afternoon and try this new bedding out. I can tell you this, there is now NO PLAY whatsoever between the stock and action, she's tight as a drum.
Oh yeah, an update on the other weekends coyote calling; around 6:30 am we got one to peek out of the sage brush at about 400 yards but never saw it again . That afternoon I went to the range and fired a few rounds but wasnt too impressed with the groups I was shooting, so thats why the above decision to bed the thing .
And here I thought I was going to get to be the first to "prove out" the bedding as the answer. But I''ve got my fingers crossed for you on Wednesday John....
