i am only 24 and i have owned everything from s&w 40v up to two glocks and two xd's and two kimbers, and les baer and an hk and some others in between

This is how it looks from my chair...

"I have piles of disposable income and a pistol collection that makes most men green with envy. How dare people just go out and buy the same kind of guns that I have. Don't the proletariat know their place? You trash need to buy lower quality guns so you will be held in awe by what I have."

I know it is a joke, and I am a gun snob too but I hate to see people go out and get junk for their first gun. If all a man can afford is a Hi-Point, cool you have met the first criteria, have a gun. If they can swing a P226, even better. Now they have a gun that is worth keeping.

Just out of curiosity, what was your first gun PBP?
My first rifle was a little .22lr semi-auto Marlin. My first handgun was actually a little Jennings .32acp semi-auto pistol which I still had until just recently. Shortly after getting it I bought a Taurus .22mag revolver. Then a Taurus .357mag revolver that I also still had until recently. :)

I'm actually kinda disappointed that you don't have one of your trademark light-box photos of it, 'cause that'd be freakin' awesome. :D

Damn, I'm starting to feel guilty because I didn't start off with a pot metal p.o.s. I came to shooting relatively late in my middle years when I had some disposable income. I did everything by the numbers -- I shot a friend's guns, went to a shooting range where I got lessons, tried a few guns on the rental board, and researched, researched, researched, until I finally settled on a S & W 686. Not the top of the line, but I think most of you'd agree, a fine handgun. I've bought and sold dozens since then, but I still have the 686 and it gets shot regularly. I doubt if I'll ever sell it.

My first handgun shouldn't upset you too much. It was a High Standard Dura-Matic. The barrel was held to the frame by a screw in the trigger guard. The screw wouldn't stay tight. I didn't know about thread locker in '82 and couldn't find the proper lock washer for the thing. Got the thing as part of a trade for a Marlin .357mag lever gun. (Wish I still had that one!)

My 1st handgun was a CZ-75b 9mm. I fully intend to keep it until I pass it on to my children (when i have them) one day.

After that I got a CCW and grabbed up a used Kel-Tec PF-9, not a huge fan of that one, and considered trading it off, but my 16 year old brother loves the little thing, so i'll probably keep it and sell it to him when he turns 18.

Last Handgun was a CZ-PCR 9mm as a carry weapon. I like it as well as the 75b. So I'm keeping it for myself as well.

Most expensive was the PCR and I paid about $600 for it. I'd love a Cbob, and plan to get one one day, but I don't see the need to spend the cash on one right now.

My 1st handgun was a Smith & Wesson Model 10. I bought it from another airman when I was in the Air Force in the mid 60s. I paid $25.00 for it. I wish that I still had it.

My first handgun was Bulgarian 9X18 Makarov for $180.00 (Unnissued).
I didn't realize at the time that it was actually a great pistol...just relatively good and cheap.

am I still required to start off with a crappy, unreliable gun that most people would never trust their lives to in order to earn your respect?
or can I just go ahead and buy a Glock? I sure wouldn't want to upset anyone on any internet forums, because someone's comments on an internet forum is the perfect way to judge the caliber of their person.

now thats funny right there! comparing a glock with a CBOB! :barf:

Hey PBP, hope you removed your tongue from it's firm placement in your cheek in time for a few libations tonight!
Great way to get guys to talk about their first gun without just posting that same old poll.

Hey Don P, I have one of them Jennings 22lr guns & you know what? It is 100% & accurate to boot! I know I sometimes can't believe it but I shoot it so I know. Got it for $59.00 new way back.

My first was my HK USP Compact 9mm abut 12 years ago I still have today. Been what some call a "gun snob" since....though I love my little Kel-Tec P32 also.:D

I'm 23 years old and just purchased my first handgun. An H&K P30.

Boy was it pricey and I love it! The Germans make good stuff...

I say if your young and have the financial ability to purchase any handgun you want, why not?

I've never read a rule book that states you must by a POS for your first gun. Although, I have heard many old men mumbling under their breath saying "Dag bern young whipper snappers and their fancy brand new guns", or something to that effect ;)

Oh, wait, I do own a Mosin Nagant, does that make you feel better? Crap, that's not a handgun...sorry.

Yeah, first handgun I ever shot was my daddy's WWII Colt 1911, back in 1964 or so (that would have made me eight years old).

He sold that 1911 and, ahhh.. departed the premises a short time later.

Fast-forward a bit more than a decade, a few years in the military, and a re-introduction to the 1911, the first handgun I bought for myself was (surprise!) an old 1911. Yes, it was a total POS, and wasn't worth the $250 I paid for it. It's problems were many and varied.

It actually soured me on 1911s for a good while. Fortunately, that was not permanent :) and I have returned with a vengeance in my later years.

Actually, it took me a bit more to get through my POS phase...you can read some of my other posts on my experiences with Kel-Tecs.

Hey, if you are young, and you have the taste and the wherewithal to afford high quality stuff...God bless you, and go for it. In my day, I had none of the above.

single six here, followed by a mark 1 target. Then a model 14 Dan Wesson, then a super Blackhawk, all at an early age.....reloading by 21, .....all on my dime, no gifts. I was a late starter, did my best to catch up. all thanks to a patient former Marine at work who showed me many things. Thanks Eli! Semper Fi!

Lol. My first gun was an 870 20 gauge, then a hipoint 9mm, then a sigma .40, then a taurus .40, those were my first few guns =) I bought all of them except the 870, it was a birthday present from my dad when i was a wee little kid.

:)

I know, right? The first rifle I bought was a Marlin 60 that took me quite a while to buy. I was proud of my Jennings .22, but too bad I didn't know about the internet otherwise I might have figured out how to clean it.
