I know I shouldn't say this but If I was CCW I would carry 24-7 regardless of signs. Until HR218 I engaged in "criminal" behavior on several occasions

How often do I carry?

Well, I carry most every place I go (100 % at nightime).
I always have either my Rohrbaugh .380 auto or my S&W mod. 442 on me as they are so light and easy to carry, especially with lightweight summer clothes.

Like most everyone here, whenever I am physically and legally able to. Unfortunately this leaves a large amount of time going unarmed due to attending University classes daily. Agitates me every time I think about it.

I am armed 16-24hrs a day 360 days a year. The 5 days a year I am unarmed are when I visit my family out east. Other than that if I'm awake I am armed.

Until I can get the 100% accurate crystal ball that will inform me when and where I will need to defend my life/my families life, I will continue to carry everyday, everywhere.

We have little ones in the home, and the safest place for my loaded XD40 or 1006 or CZ82 or 1911 or J-frame, etc. is on my belt in my IWB M-tac holster.

My wife carries as well. I can't be everywhere all the time.:D

Where it's legal...And I try to stay away from places where it's not as much as practical...No Guns = No Sales!

Most people are not willing to pack an extra two pounds every day.

Some of us, when we go to the Doctor have to tell them to subtract five pounds from our weight, as that is the approximate weight of all the crap we carry. :)

I think your local Sheriff is probably right. Most people, even if they have a concealed weapon permit or whatever it's called, will only carry when "they feel the need to." If I ever felt the need to carry a gun I certainly wouldn't carry a handgun and I probably wouldn't go to that place that I felt I had to carry at.

For me, guns are not fashion accessories. I carry a gun or three because I foresee the real possibility of needing one to end a violent encounter against my life or the life of another.

I did some work on my mom and dads property today and carried the entire time. It used to be just when I was out and about, now its pretty much always.

This is what I carry 24/7

I carry any time I am not on my way to or from work (legally prevented from carrying at work).

At almost any other time I am carrying and I feel naked without my gun. Yes, I live in a safe place and I avoid dangerous places, but I don't want that "once in a lifetime" event to happen at the very end of my lifetime. :)

Oh, and inside the house it's about 50/50. If I just came back from somewhere, or am about to leave, I carry inside the house.

When I ask about concealed carry habits its cause I am curious. The local sheriff feels that number is very low--maybe 5%. He feels nobody is going to put up with carrying an extra 2+pounds of steel all day.He doesn't consider a gun in the car carrying, and I agree.

Your survey will give you a biased result toward those who do carry all the time. This is, after all, a gun forum, where a lot of people who are very serious about this issue do participate. We are not in the majority, however. Far from it. Your Sheriff friend is a lot closer to the truth on this than the poll so far.

From chatting with folks at CHL classes here in Texas, I would put the number closer to 30%.

However, I think your Sheriff friend's reasoning is off. It isn't the extra weight that is at issue. Why? Because a lot of people carry guns a lot smaller than 2 extra pounds. For a lot of people, it is just a hassle to worry about being armed depending on their daily activities (legalities). For others, they don't see a need for a gun most of the time.

I suspect that the Sheriff is basing his numbers on the national average of licenses to citizens issued nationwide. If you discount the criminals that carry in total disregard for the law, I suspect he is probably very close. Except that I'd say 5% is a little high and even that would assume that all licensees carry their guns all the time, which we know isn't true.

I am interested to know how many current TX CHL there are in circulation. The number must be impressive. According to the info hosted at TX Dept of Safety, Texas has issued between 75-90k new licenses every year for the last five or six years.

I think you misread something somewhere. Those are NOT new licenses, but licenses issued in general.

Additionally, your numbers are a bit high.
Fiscal 2008 73K
2007 91K
2006 68K

The total number of license holders as of Fiscal 2008 was 314574 with 1511 instructors. In other words, on 1.3% of the Texas population has their CHLs, or roughly 2% of the adult Texas population has their CHLs.

Here are the breakdowns by year...
2008 had 314574 + 1511
2007 had 288909 + 1639
2006 had 258162 + 1456
2005 had 248874 + 1648
2004 had 239940 + 1501
2003 had 239863 + 1448

So Texas is NOT getting 75-90K new CHLs each year. We don't even have 90,000 more CHL holders than we had in 2003

Being fortunate enough to have several CCW options, my daily routine includes carrying two pocket pistols (actually in my pants pockets) in addition to a primary weapon either in my briefcase (to and from work), in a belt holster (when the weather allows a sweater), a pocket holster in a jacket, a fanny pack, or in a small tote bag on the floor of the car.

My CCW permit should arrive any day now, but right now I'm not legally able to carry concealed. I suspect that, once it's here, I'll start trying out various holsters and carrying fairly often when I'm not going somewhere where that's not allowed or is inadvisable.

Here in Nevada nobody seems to worry about those of us who carry legally, but I work in California and spend a day there every other week. I won't be taking the gun with me on the plane. California doesn't recognize CCWs from other states, nor will it issue CCWs to anybody who isn't a resident of the county where they apply. There really is no provision for non-Californians to carry concealed, and since the state is "may issue", many counties won't issue us regular folk a permit. (Friends of the sheriff and contributors to his re-election campaign only.) :/

I expect I'll carry fairly frequently when I'm at home, though, and after I've found a good holster and figured out how to manage it.

In the truck to and from work, handy at home in the evenings. On, with, or beside me on the weekends, usually on though:cool:
