How do you carry your spare mag for CCW?

I too am of the school of "if you need to reload then you have engaged in a problem you alone can not fix". I prefer to practice situational awareness instead of relying on gear and gadgets to save my life.

Seriously? A reload is "gear and gadgets"? A mag is the weakest link in the semi-auto platform, common sense says carry a spare. And suppose that, in spite of your situational awareness, you end up in a gun fight, what are you going to do when it's over? Stand there afterwards with an empty piece waiting for the cops to show up?

Can I assume by your handle that you are/were NYPD? You go on duty with just the ammo in your gun? I'm sure not. What's the difference off duty? A spare mag, speed loader, or speed strip is cheap and easy insurance, too easy to just blow off.

I purchased a real nice dual mag pouch from "Cheaper Than Dirt" for my XD40 12 round mags. It's made by ElPaso Saddlery. They only come in brown, but a little black Kiwi leather dye took care of that.

Do what you want but understand my logic,
A) If you take care of your tools they'll take care of you, so I don't walk out the door expecting my pistol to fail. If you follow that line of thinking then you must also carry a third mag in case the second fails as well as a second gun in case the first goes down.
B) Self defense 101, be aware of your surroundings. "Self" defense is just that, don't engage in problems you can't fix. You're not going nor have a duty to stop four armed men from robbing a bank as an example.
C) What's the difference in off duty carry? Duty rigs are for Offensive carry where one must engage in combat to apprehend criminals. Off duty is for Defensive carry in the protection of self. Don't mix the two.
D) Cheap insurance is knowing the law and it's application. Should you end up in a gun fight, when it's all over you will have to explain to the District Attorney that a pre meditated intent to carry spare ammunition was not an intent of malice or how you had time to reload while defending yourself.
My practices are from my own experience and these are just some of the reason for my choice. Practice your right as you wish.

NYPD13: I can understand your logic on the others, even if I disagree, but I can't get on board with this one without a case citation.

I got it from Dillon Precision Products. Item SOS-DL

Just my two cents

If you are carrying its for protection; if having an extra mag makes you feel safer then do it. I carry a Ruger LCP .380 with an extra clip in my front pocket. i like knowing that its there; and lets face it its going to take a couple rounds to take an attacker down.

There are alot of what ifs....

I personally use ammo that I've fired continously out of my gun. If I can not shoot at least 50 rounds without a jam then the ammo is not for the gun or there is something wrong with the gun.

Samsung digital camera case on left side. Good cammo and secure. Carry two 1911 mags. Have a cardboard divider to prevent wear and banging.

I discovered a Victorinox SwissTool pouch works perfectly for my CZ 97b mags. I cut off the flap, sewed it shut and voila. $8 delivered.

IDPA taught me that a spare magazine is a good thing.

I think you've been in NY too long. Much of the country doesn't ascribe to New York's line of thinking with concealed carry.

C) What's the difference in off duty carry? Duty rigs are for Offensive carry where one must engage in combat to apprehend criminals. Off duty is for Defensive carry in the protection of self (and others). Don't mix the two.

Fixed it for you.

Yikes. You really believe that? Want me to cite examples of numerous jams, FTE, FTF and general malfunctions I've seen at our competitions?

One more use for a reload of ammo not mentioned, is not having to go home with and empty/near weapon.

Especially, those who only carry a 5/6 shot pistol. You could easily expend all/nearly all of your rounds.

Carrying at least one reload only makes good sense, for a multitude of reasons.

Please if you don't carry a spare - don't start the average SD incident or your spider sense superiority discussion. We have done that into the dirt.

Answer the question.

Thanks for all the feedback. Seems to me that it makes sense to carry a spare if for no other reason than backup for a malfunction. Seeing as though I'd like to get into IDPA I will probably go with a vertical OWB of some sort so I can get used to the movement.

Back left pocket. Whether I am carrying my G21, G27, SIG, or 1911 I always have the spare in my back left pocket. Gun on my 4:00 position. Is that weird?

SA 1911 - XD45 - G21sf - G22 - G27 - Hk USP 40 - SIG P226 E2 - Browning High-Power - S&W M19-3 - CZ-82 - S&W 642 - Remington 870

I don't always carry a spare mag, but for when I do I have an old nylon Buck knife belt case that fits both my 7-round Bersa and compact 1911 mags.

Works great, it buttons to hide what's inside. I have to disarm for work (it's Ohio and it's posted, so don't have a choice, sadly enough). But I do not have to remove the "mag pouch." What good does it do me to have ammo and a mag for a gun that's not on me, you might ask? None at all, but it saves me the trouble of having to unpack one more thing from my belt before I can go inside.

Anyways, nylon knife case works:rolleyes:
