...if memory serves me, it's no longer 20 and get 50% of your pay retirement....I believe it's now 25.

I think your memory is dis-serving you, it's always been 20 as far as I know.

USMC 1994-1999.

Good people, good times! I figured 5 years was enough to secure bragging rights for life and to fulfill any sense of obligation. Took the work ethic and GI Bill and moved on from there.

Hoytinak,

Don't know your age or circumstance. But 10 yrs is really not all that much more to go when the benefits are figured in. The private sector has all but done away with pensions. The 401K has replaced them at a lot of employers. And medical costs are going through the roof. That alone would make hanging in for the last 10 worth it. When I retire in a few years, our house will be paid off, but medical insurance will be so high, it will simply take the place of a house payment. Getting out, you'd be at square 1 at any new job. Probably not going to enjoy it any more than where you are now. And look at 20-30 yrs for full retirement benefits ( whatever they might be ).

My $.02

Listen to tuckerdog
I have regretted my decision to leave almost since I left.
Especially after watching my father being treated for cancer and the cost that it would have been if not for Champus or whatever they are calling it now

Yep, USN,1971-1975 four patrols on boomer subs,TM3 (SS), small arms officer; also 3 years US Army M P , inactive reserve. God bless America and those who protect her!

No love for the Reserves or National Guard folks. Thousands have served in Iraq so far. Some of them taking cuts in pay to do so. At one point in the war about 40% of the active force on duty was made up of the Guard and Reserve.

I think your memory is dis-serving you, it's always been 20 as far as I know.

20 is correct...

How you retired pay is computed depends upon when you entered the service. If you enlisted after 8 Sep 80 you retired pay is based upon your high three years average.

Marines and the Navy have to make 30 years to be retired. After 20 years they are part of the Fleet Reserve or Fleet Marine Corps and draw retainer pay. Only after 30 years do they draw retired pay.

for the folks who came into the service after 1 Aug 1986 there is a third system. At 15 years you can elect to stay with the high three method or you can elect to go with another method and get a $30,000 bonus. Your retired pay would only be 47% of the high three average with a 1% reduction in cost of living increases until age 62. At Age 62 everything goes back to the after 80 method.

Thanks to the Vets and those serving Active, Reserve and National Guard.

US Army 1997 to 2002. One year reserve while still in high school then I switched over after graduation and did 4 years on active duty.
