No, I failed the physical different times. I wish I could have, but it was not in the cards. Without military service, I don't think that you should be able to own property, or vote. People live all their lives in a free country, and try to criticize it and tear it down because there are men and women who will do the violence that the despise, on their behalf. Those who can't serve, like myself, could just as easily be conscripted for 2 years at the Post Office or some other type of federal service. Just my opinion.

I did my time in the 101st Airborne, nothing happened in Cuba and I was mustered out before Viet nam got really nasty. I thought about re upping, but my brand new wife and baby had a say in the situation. I somehow got stuck in the active reserves rather than in the in inactive reserves, but I was in a training company and the time spent was fun for me. I didn't even try to correct the error on the part of the Military.
I had a chance to go to learn to fly helicopters while in the reserve and during Viet Nam, but they would have had to "reactivate" me to full service to qualify for the school, where I would have the rank of Warrent Officer. We had another baby by this time so I guess I chose not to put myself in harms way again. Hell, the Army had their chance to put me in combat, they elected not too, I guees I was one of the lucky ones that served and had no real danger involved. Today I watch the show, Band of brothers,, what could be more true of the Military and the men and women in service.
My salutes to all who have ever served in the past and especially to those today that do serve, unselfishly and as volunteers.
To this day, when I hear the Star Spangled Banner played, it still sorta gets me inside. When thy play the National Anthem, I think I am the first to stand up, at attention, and hell I am 64 now.
As screwed up as some thing are, I still love my Country, always have, always will.

Terminator

Sometime find the book "Starship Trooper" and give it a read. Don't bother with the movie it's not the same thing.

Blackwater Ops,

You're probably correct, that it's more likely vets would click on the thread. And even non-vets that do click, are more likely not to even answer YES or NO. Sure not a scientific poll.

A big "Thank you" to all that have gone before, and to all that are currently serving.

Also, thanks to those that have not served, but appreciate the service of those that have. Far too many don't give a second thought about the price that get's paid for the freedoms they take for granted.

I would agree that the vets are most likely to click on this thread. But they are most likely not going to vote if they are from the Viet Nam era. There were no bands playing when we came home, no home comings, no heros in neigborhood. We were killers and murderers. We were spit on, had garbage thrown at us and then when you needed any medical care as a vet, you were treated like a pig crap. And things haven't gotten much better for the VN vet. I won't even get near a Vet hospital, I care about me too much to let Uncle Sammys morons touch me. They are actively killing the guy I went thru Nam with by over medicating him. Oh well, rant off.

No. The conscritption lottery for Viet Nam just missed me

This was 1970, and my draft number was 115. That year they drafted up to #110.

I have the highest respect for all of those who have served our country, but I never did. Now that I'm older than dirt, no one would want me.

My dad and uncle served in Desert Storm. My grandpa served in Vietnam. My great grandpa served in Korea. I also have lots of older cousins currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. I may not support the war much, but I do support our troops. God bless them for defending my freedoms. I most likely will never serve when I'm 18 because I have a 10 month old son and I don't want to miss ANY part of him growing up. Also too I got a medical condition that won't allow me to join anyways. I'm working on getting that problem to go away though.

I would have to say that Vets are like the best story tellers on Earth. I can just sit for hours listening to my grandpa tell me Vietnam stories. He's a bit on the graphic side, but he's just being real. :)

So far a little over 10 yrs. in the 82nd ABN (think i'm done after this though). Currently on my second deployment in Iraq. (fifth deployment total)
