USAF 1954-57

Served as a General Instructor for two years and as a bandsman for the balance of my hitch. Nothing quite dulls the senses more than a hot Saturday night in Fairbanks, AK.......

USAF active duty 1965 -1969, USAFR for 30 years after that, until I reached 60 when they threw me out (made me retire). I miss just about everything to do with being in the Air Force but it was proper for me to step aside at age 60. The people that worked for me were carrying me to some extent; what we did made pretty big demands on physical strength and endurance and my contribution became less than it ought to have been as I got older.

Those who can't serve, like myself, could just as easily be conscripted for 2 years at the Post Office or some other type of federal service.

I appreciate your military service and hope that God blesses each of you for your selfless loyalty to our nation.

That being said, I worked as a teacher in the public schools for 22 years. I was physically assaulted 7 times, left the school systems and worked in the Texas Prison system where I was much safer. We each serve our country in our own way.

Without military service, I don't think that you should be able to own property, or vote

That's a bit extreme. What about those folks who are born with a medical condition that makes them unfit for military service? They should be punished for the rest of their lives by being totally disenfranchised??? Crazy idea.

I'm all for some kind of required service, but this idea is a bad one.

U.S. Army 6/72 to 6/76. Fort Dix, N.J. and Germany. No combat experience in which I'm greatful but then again always wondered how I would react to it. My gretest respect to those who had to experience it.

Army. Infantry.

But I wouldn't put much faith in the percentages that this poll is generating because participation is voluntary. I'll bet the percentage of those who served is highly skewed.

What about cops, firefighters, and EMTs?

I also agree here. I can't really put words to the respect I have for those who serve in the military. But that said, many people work for state and federal entities out of a desire to serve their country, even if military service is not possible or practical for them (and let's not forget, there are probably lots of people who'd love to join the military, but the military doesn't want or need them).

Just sayin'.

I've been a police officer since I left the Army in 2000. But it's been my general experience on this forum any a few others that I frequent (THR, S&W) that police and even EMT's and Fire tend to be held in a lower regard than the military.

Think about all the threads over the years talking about how cops are bad shots, brutal, bullies, ect. ect. I doubt you'll see a thread like this one regarding cops because it would be taken over by the cop haters. Which isn't surprising given the fact that law enforcement is internal and enforces civil law. Civil law involves gun control and we know how popular that is.

The military deals with external threats and many hold vets in higher regard. So it goes.
