Handguns down under, an insight

All revolutions, successful and unsuccessful, increase the power of government.

Then I guess we Americans should have stayed 'subjects' to the King of England, right? And remember what the power of the King was back in the 1770s. Even Obama doesn't have that kind of power.

Sad the way things are in Oz as well as many other places in the world. Problem is the rest of the world tends to believe the antigun bias AND the numbers of gun violence activities is greatly reduced in most of those countries. The criminal activity might be worse but the gun crime is reduced. This tends to support the anti-gun laws and keeps the true enthusiasts jumping through hoops. Since the majority oftens has little to NO contact with the good side of guns then there is a lack of friendlies when gun restrictions are proposed.

Here in this country it is very similar. The antis have not yet won the entire country but many places have had onerous restrictions for years. 1911 was the year of John M. Brownings crowning achievement as well as the start of New York's "Sullivans Law". In time I see handguns in this country being even more restricted despite Heller. Seems we are losing handgun enthusists in this country due to expanding restrictions. In time there will not be enough to win the day.

I keep fighting to impress my children and friends with the need to understand and support the right to Bear Arms but I see it as a losing proposition in the next 50 years. At my age I will not live to see it but I will bet money it will happen.

Until then I will continue to support and utilize my right as well as jump through some of those hoops.

The thing I find frustrating is this anti handgun thing we have down under.

When I was eight I used to wander around the skeet shoot (claybird) competitions with my .410 in hand waiting around for my name to get called to shoot. My dad was national champ so I got used to going to the competitions. All this was alright legally because I was with my dad. Well I recon an adult with a handgun in the glovebox or in a holster on the farm is a lot safer than a dern kid with a shotgun in his hand.

Our Aborigines aren't 'impoverished' unless they want to be.... In Oz, the aborigines are WELL looked after by the govt..... free housing loans, free car loans,(they only have to make 3 payments on any loan, then the govt. will pay the rest) free health care.... priority in public housing, extra money for everything..... being a white Aussie is actually like being a second class citizen..... If an Aboriginal person wanted to be in a gun club, he/she would prolly be given a free life membership to a club (or claim the range as 'ancestoral land') prolly get given free guns and ammo supplied

So don't worry about them, they are very well looked after :D

Guns in the Land of Oz

Dingoboyx: Earlier this year I was in QLD, Dalby to be specific. I met some wonderful folks there. The short of it was the Australian Firearms laws after the incident in Taz was viewed by many as a "knee jerk reaction". A mate of mine there gave me a movie to watch that also demonstrated that uninformed is unarmed. The movie was called "The Castle". I urge every American to watch this movie. It could happen to you. If you don't want to re-read the Declaration of Independence and The # Articles of the Constitution and first Ten Ammendments you might think about Canada. The other thing I learned was about The Dud's Apology. The week I got home I saw the movie Australia.....whoa!!!! I had an entirely different view about the movie. ( Nicole is still hot though! ).
The shooters in Oz are truly dedicated and not just casual shooters. They have to be to jump through the hoops. I would venture to say that not many US Citizens would do the same. Dingoboyx, persevere on the hoops. As you say "Good on ya".
P.S. I'd love to come back to Oz...I love a good mixed grill of a nice Wagyu Rib Fillet, a cold Toohey's Extra Dry, Chips & Gravy or a good Meat Pie, no maggot bags...Spot On!!! Yes I tried Vegemite perfect countermeasure to a long nite at the Cri, Oh, and the Chopper skits on Ronnie Johns Half-hour....Neville Bartos watch out!!! Chopper's Weather Report's the best!!

Yeah, rock on Chopper.

The whole show's pretty funny, but Chopper is best.

We get it on TV here because in NZ we are too poor to have our own TV productions.

Dingo,

Great thread. Thanks for taking your time to share.

As you can probably tell from my handle, I'm a Police Officer in the here in the states. I was told by a friend that had visited your country and had the occasion to chat with an Australian LEO (Law Enforcement Officer), (I don't recall where in Australia) and he told me that the Cops carry handguns just as we LEO's do here but they are required to leave them at their respective department after their tour of duty ends. I'm curious if that is the case. If so i'd be curious as to why your government wouldn't want, or discourage their trained LEO's not to carry while off duty. I'd like to think since the general citizenry aren't allowed to protect themselves, if their aren't uniformed LEO's present when some type of crime is committed, that an off-duty LEO that was in the right place at the right time could. Seems silly to me to discourage carry AT ALL for Law Abiders, and even more so for the LEO's that make it their career to enforce those laws.

I'm in New Jersey (a so-called may issue state). Basically if your not a cop, a criminal prosecutor for the state, a corrections officer, or work for an armed security company (requiring hoop-jumping), your not getting a permit to carry. However NJ has some of the most stringent carry laws in the US. There are a couple other states that are just as bad. Maybe worse.

And yes, the UK, Germany, and most every country,
I agree on UK, which is an Orwellian society where you're not allowed to own any type of handgun and is constantly watched by the government, but why do you include Germany in that list?

For all I know, ownership of handguns is rather liberal in Germany, in European terms.

MontyCop05: At least in my home state of NSW, while on duty the police are exempt from the Firearms Act. They carry their guns under the common law right to keep and bear arms (which is specifically wiped out in the Firearms Act). Off duty they technically cannot carry a firearm. The Act also requires that firearms be stored in an approved safe, which most police will not have.

I would guess that there is also a degree of fear of rogue cops. For many years the police force and government in this state could best be compared to that of Chicago. These days there is less noise about the cops but the government is considered to be the most corrupt in the country. The Police force in the state of Victoria is definitely on the nose, the kneeling man shot seven times in the back of the head in self defence by a cop comes to mind - he had to take his partners gun to fire the seventh shot.
Back in the 80s detectives in the NSW Police arranged armed robberies and ran drugs. Pedophile judges were protected in New South Wales and in South Australia. The most wanted man in Australia was a cop who robbed banks, raped multiple women and committed at least one murder. Based on the above I would say the politicians trust the cops as much as they trust the general population.

FotoTomas G'day mate! It's been a while since I was on the Beretta forum. I think you will find that the decline in handgun enthusiasts has been more than offset by the rise in the number of handgun owners who just consider it a safety tool.

FWIW, here in Australia we are starting to see a slow roll back of many of the more onerous firearms regulations. A few years ago an attempt to ban pump action rifles was stopped cold. The state of Western Australia is now allowing pump action shotguns for some sporting purposes. Victoria has expanded the number of competitions that justify owning .45 caliber pistols. New South Wales now allows unlicensed shooters to shoot under the supervision of a licensed shooter and also allows hunting in state forests. Last week the government members ran from the state senate (shutting it down) when they realized they had lost control of the senate after rejecting a bill to allow hunting in national parks. :)

One step at a time, we will reclaim our rights. It doesn't matter if the inactive majority are opposed as long as those who are for liberty are actually active.

G'day Rad! Missed you for awhile! Come visit!

As for the OP... I am glad things are improving down under and hope they get better still. Thanfully none of the old commonwealth members that still had handguns have gone quite so drastic as Britain after Dunblane.

Montycop, LEO's in Australia don't need a civillian firearms licence, they are signed up & sworn in and as such, they are allowed to use ANY government ASSETS.... assets covers, pens, stationary, photocopier, camera, police radio, squad car, firearm etc etc... so, unless they are thrown out of the force for some reason, they can use anything that the govt owns, which includes guns.

I believe some LEO's would take thier guns home, they just have to be stored as per regulation. If a cop is on an assignment out of town or interstate & has to stop at a motel for the night, he has to keep his gun (usually Glock 17) with him/her.... but unless a detective or plain clothes cop (or under cover) they cant carry their gun unless in uniform (the gun/utility belt/hat/shirt/pants/boots are the uniform)

I am guessing office based, low ranking duty cops would leave thier firearms at 'the office' to save buying a safe for home.... but full on, on call, general duties cops don't want to get called to a crime when not on thier shift, and have to stop of at the station to 'sign out' a weapon on the way, when time is of the essence ;)

Great thread Muzz

>>>One step at a time, we will reclaim our rights. It doesn't matter if the inactive majority are opposed as long as those who are for liberty are actually active.<<<

Good on ya! THAT'S the way to do it after all - the squeaky wheel always gets the grease in a democracy and it'll be nice to see that work on the side of of what's RIGHT for a change.

Muzza: I missed this thread the first time through! Very fun to read. I've only been to Sydney thus far (it's so daggum expensive to get to Oz...) but as I tell folks in The States, it's the nicest city I've ever been to. They go, "Huh??" I say well, imagine Seattle improved and moved to Los Angeles!

But I've gotta tell ya dude, I got a helluva good chuckle out of this: "I have an old ute like one of your Eldorado's." You knucklehead! It's not an ELDORADO - that's a big fat Cadillac! It's an EL CAMINO. LOL!!! :D

Oh cripes I found that funny. :o And maybe .0005% of Americans know what a "ute" is by Ozzie standards, totally different meaning in The States.

Hey, my local dealer (the Thunderstick Trading Company in Tucson - God's country) still has a 5.5" polished Old Army new in stock for less than $500. Can you believe that?! MAN what a great looking iron.

Cheers bro,
Oly

Muzza, thanks for the info, great thread.

Only been to Sydney -- enjoyed it a lot, but man, flats in Coogee (where we were staying with a friend) ain't half expensive! Loved the train ride out to Katoomba, too. Next trip I want to do a Bill Bryson and see more of the land.

^ Dev

So you went on the vertical railway, hey? Great isn't it :D

I reckon if someone stateside wants to see Oz, The best way is to come over and rent a motor home (like a Win-dorado :D Just trickin' you Oly... I know it is a winnebago:p) for a couple of weeks, see the real Australia.

If anyone does come over, you'd better look me up & come and say hi, & stay a while ;)

I am in Canberra at the moment, but packing to move to Caloundra, in Queensland in the next month or so. Take a look in Googlemaps, Caloundra is awsome (warmer too) :D

>>>Caloundra<<<

Oh that sounds very nice indeed! I've a workmate who commutes out of Brisbane and he's always on about how much nicer it is than Sydney and you're south of that so it does for sure sound like lovely weather is in your future.

Two things: 1) I sure as heck hope they have good place to shoot there?? 2) Don't let yer shootin' irons rust!

Hasta,
Oly

Oly

I will be joining the 'North Arm' gun club near Yandina (Speedway @ Yandina too :D) so the range will be about 20 minutes drive, about the same as here  No chance of the 'irons' rusting, have no fear :D

Queensland is a beaut place to be, but it is like going back in time about 20 years.... they have some funny ideas up there.... but I have plenty of funny ideas myself, so should fit right in, ROTFL.

My other hobby is airboats, so I am looking forward to the warmer weather and excellent waterways & swamps & things to make a complete @ss of myself in as well :D

Dreading the move tho :-(

Keep stickin' it to the man, Dingo! I honestly can't even imagine living like that. I'm sure "Oz" is a great place, but seriously! Nothing over 9mm???? Like anyone's going to be any deader after getting shot with 10 .45's, as opposed to 9mm? Oh well. I'm just glad I live not only in the US, but in NH. Head into my local gun store, and walk out 15 minutes later with a Barrett .50 BMG. Well, if I had $12000 anyway. Dude, if you want, you can move to America and crash on my couch while you get a greencard. Just keep your hands off my wife, 'cause in America we're allowed to have REAL guns! :D

Thanks Scan

I guess if an illegal can be the prez, I should have no problems getting let in to America :D Anyone know where I can get a fake passport or birth certificate? Maybe I can just learn spanish and say I am from mexico and I will be given a house, car, job and free health care too? ROTFL

Nothing over 9mm is generally true, but because i shoot CAS & Black powder, most of my wheel guns are 44 mag, and Bp 44-45 (ROA, Pietta, Colt)

Australia is a nice, safe place to live.... our new gubbmint turned out better than your new :barf: one (at least our Prime Minister is an Aussie citizen) & our gun laws are LIVEABLE.... I mean, If you have guns you MUST shoot them :D (so SWMBO has to accept I MUST SHOOT):D;)
