Gale McMillan is gone

Gale passed away quietly at home today. He had been slipping downhill quickly for the past week and it became clear this morning that the end was very near. Even after being informed 4 weeks ago that his cancer was terminal he continued to have a positive attitude and vowed to fight to the end. I'm very proud of him, he displayed an incredible spirit and even though he didn't believe that his work here was finished he accepted his fate with courage and dignity. Gale told me last month that "I have no regrets, no man ever had a better life. If it's my time so be it, I've had 70 good years, who can ask for more".

I believe that a man can approach his end as peacefully as Gale did only if he has a clear conscience. Gale never gave me any indication that he was afraid, only that he was worried about my mom. My father came to his end with a clear conscience, loved and respected by people all over the world. I have never met a man who was as admired and loved as Gale was, I'm sure this came about because of his concern for others and his honesty. If everyone was like Gale we wouldn't need lawyers.

One of Gale's most satisfying relationships in recent years was the one he had with you guys, the members of The Firing Line. Gale was honored to be consulted, he was flattered that you came to him for advise and, above all, he was amazed overwhelmed and by the concern you all expressed when he announced his illness. Gale was very proud to have been asked to moderate this group, too bad it didn't work out that way.

Last year Gale was needing something to do so I talked him into writing a life history, he finished it exactly when he found out he had bladder cancer so he never had the time to correct it (something I'm glad for, it certainly has his personality in it). I should have had it printed before but with all that has gone on I didn't get it done. I'm now having it printed and know that Gale would like to include some of your comments at the end, something you think his great grandkids would like to hear about their Grandpa Mac. Anyone wishing to contribute can email it to me at rock@mcmfamily.com

My father was my best friend for my entire life, I'm going to miss him but I'm glad his suffering is over. This is very hard for me, you see, I've lost my father, my best friend and a business consultant all at the same time. One thing that makes it easier is knowing that he will be missed by all of you.

THANKS

Rock McMillan

My sympathies. He will be missed by all.

and its efficiency is only marred by the difficulty of finding twelve men

Our hearts and prayers are with you Rock, for Gale was a true Patriot and a man among men. Even though I never met him personally, I feel like he was part of the family thanks to TFL.
He will not be forgotten, and will be missed by all of us.

Rock please accept our prayers and condolences. Though I never meet your dad in person, I certainly benefited from his knowledge and enjoyed his insights, he will be missed and remembered. Pax vobiscum. M&M2

Sorry to hear about your father, Rock.
While I never got to meet him we used to type back and forth before TFL on rec.guns. He gave me lots of insite on the .300 Win Mag.
I'll miss those posts.

It's hard to say something that hasn't been said before and better.

I have an acquaintance who has one of Gale's fiberglass ("Please, not 'plastic'!") rifle stocks. I'll be thinking of Gale often - and feel a terrible loss.

To you and your family, from my family and me, our sincerest condolences.

My condolences to the entire McMillan family. The shooting sports world has lost a hero and a mentor, but not the legacy and the memories.

My sincerest condolences.

However, there ain't no such thing as "post-ban" in the Happy Hunting Grounds in the sky.

I like to think St.Pete will say:
"Welcome, here's your [insert gun of choice], and there's all the free ammo you need over yonder!"
