"Fun" Guns in Your Collection

  • Taurus M44 w/8" barrel .44 Mag
  • Mosin Nagant M38 (or is it a M44??)
  • Ruger Single-Six 5½" .22LR/.22 Mag

The Taurus M44 has barrel porting and is a hoot to shoot at indoor ranges with my hot 2400/180gr handloads, or Remington's HOT 180gr UMC loads.. Contrary to internet lore, it's accurate, has a decent trigger, and stages the cylinder nicely.

I've had people approach me at the local outdoor range inquiring about the loud cannon I'm shooting (Mosin M44/38) that's making a 3' fireball and laying the grass down in front of me. LoL. The Pachmayr slip-on recoil pad is necessary for a day of shooting the Mosin. The fun part about the Mosin is letting other shooters have a go with it, then letting me shoot one of their firearms! Win-win for me, and has allowed me to meet a lot of really nice people at the range.

My Single-Six is accurate as heck, has a decent trigger, and shoots everything from .22 CB caps to .22 Magnums.

@ parisite--I wanna have a go with yer H&R .500 Mag!

Brown Bess, the revolutionary period flintlock smoothbore muzzle loading musket. Good for hunting but a real joy to shoot in competitions at reenactments.

Just JOY,JOY,JOY.

out of the 75 or so that i have all but one or two were purchased simply to have fun with.
the latest two being a pair of browning o/u's for sporting clays and maybe a little upland shooting.

EdInk:

All of my 25 guns are fun guns. However, two stand out: a Smith & Wesson 625, 45 auto rim and a Model 25, 45 Colt.

Actually nearly all of mine too were purchased for fun. I just named my top 2 at the moment.

Those are subject change the next time I go shooting.

Although they are quite adequate for SD, the tokarev and 6" GP100 are more just fun to hold and shoot. I plan on adding some rifles to the mix that will be strictly for fun as well.

Hopefully, I'll be forgiven if some of mine are rifles.

My Marlin 1894 is a fun gun. I've taken it to two 2-gun action shooting events. It is accurate and lots more fun than a semi-auto. The only problem is that I hate to lose the 44 Magnum brass. I have fantasies that Illinois will some day allow handgun caliber rifles for deer hunting, and this will be just the ticket.

My S&W 625 could be a great home defense gun, but it isn't. I bought it so I can shoot 45 ACP at the range and not chase brass. :D I might take it action shooting for the same reason.

My Para GI Expert is a fun gun. I bought it because "this is the time" 100th anniversary year. Again, it could make a GREAT HD gun, but it isn't!

My Ruger Mk. II Target is also a fun gun, and my first gun purchase upon turning 21.

My Ruger Redhawk makes a great companion piece to the Marlin 1894. This one's too long of barrel to make a good HD handgun, but boy is it accurate at the range! I took it deer hunting once, unsuccessfully. Only saw one deer, and it was about 40 yards into thick woods. I brought the Redhawk up, cocked the hammer, and the deer just took off.

My most recent purchase was 100% for fun. It's an EAA Witness Elite Match. It's single action only with a very nice trigger and it's wonderfully accurate, more accurate than most 9mm pistols. I've got three different 9's, all of them "combat" accurate. This one is a target pistol and it's a riot to shoot. It's heavy and eats up the little bit of flip and recoil that 9mm has. It's a blast on the range and I'm very happy that I bought it.

But of all the handguns I've bought, one of them fits the bill as a "fun gun" purchase better than all the rest. It's all fun and zero utility.

It's my .30 Carbine Ruger Blackhawk.

At 40,000 PSI but with only a 110 grain bullet and a 44 ounce revolver with a 7.5 inch barrel, it's all bark with little thump. Loud as HELL. Big fireball. Crazy accurate. Just a heap of fun to shoot for pure enjoyment. Even shoots well at 100 yards... just a pity that I can't see squat at that distance.

What purpose does it serve? Well, it's one of my most accurate handguns. And it's fun. Makes a lot of noise, but not at all punishing to shoot. The blast and BOOM get your attention. It's all fun, with no real purpose.

I bought it because I had the loading dies, some brass and a couple boxes of bullets left over from a carbine I had years back. I thought it might be fun and I didn't own any single actions, so it kind of filled a "niche."

If it wasn't fun, I don't know what the heck I'd do with it. But it's all fun and I don't seem to get tired of it. Yesterday, I rolled seven boxes of ammo for it. :D

SAKO Tri-ace, Walther GSP/OSP, Hammerli 208S, Beretta Billenium, SIG P229 Sport, P220 Sport, P226 Sport, P210-5, CZ Champion, Hi-Std 10B, and many more. They serve no purpose other than to go shoot on occasion because they are different and many people have never seen them.

The only "fun gun" I currently own is the Walther P22. I think I really need a TEC-9 and a Kel-Tec P2000 sub, I'll own both someday. I also want a Judge!

Hmmh, I found the GSP boring. The same with my Hämmerli 208 and since I dropped serious competition I do not need pure-bred target guns but I do like the Hämmerli 212, for the fun-factor, and my SIG P210-4.

Those serve a purpose for me; they are high quality guns with a serious accuracy potential and I try hard to squeeze that out - despite declining eye sight.

But speaking of rare guns that many people have never seen, I have this one in the back of my safe and am waiting for an occasion to give it to one of my kids.
