friend gives me crap for carrying all the time...

I've carried for over 35 years and only my wife knows that I do. IMHO if you carry properly no one can give you a problem because they don't know that you do carry.

The permits are a joke too they're printed on like special paper and when you get a pistol put on it they use a typewriter and type it onto the permit.
Ulster County has gone to an ID card style permit, it's actually 2 cards 1 is the permit and the second card is a list of guns on the permit. Add a new handgun, get a new card. Check with your local Pistol Permit Dept. to find out if you can keep your permit if you move out of state, last I heard Ulster was the only county left that allowed it you just need to change your address. In response to your question, my wife used to ask me why I thought I needed to carry until I started pointing out ex-cons and gang bangers to her when we were out and about, she doesn't ask any more.

Bad guys dont know any boundaries, good neighborhoods, wealthy ,poor, crime follows people everywhere.Thats why I got my permit.you never know when or where. And along with my permit I stay armed,in a bad situation it just evens the odds.

The odds of a house fire are low, so therefore why bother with fire alarms? One word: consequences. Like not have a gun when you really need one, the consequences of not having fire alarms in the event of a fire is severe.

OTH, the concequences of not having pocket change for a Krispy Kreme donut when the hot light is on is slightly less severe. :p

Bad things happen everywhere. In the time I've had my CCW i drew my weapon twice.Once in a large Ohio city, and once at a crossroads in the middle of no-where New Mexico. The Ohio incident i was aware of it developing and was ready for it.The crossroads was i thought at first curious locals, but was turning out to be opportunists. In both cases things de-escalated and each side went their ways.

Just watched an episode of "I Survived" on TV (BIO channel). Apparently, each episode has at least one (out of three) reasons why someone may choose, or need, to be armed.

ask him if he belives in seat belts and helmets....ask him if he believes in having a multi-tool with him or wrench set when he goes places.....

Because a firearm is just another tool and or sefety device when you come down to it!!!!

You have the right to be "
over paranoid
. Remember Catch-22 ? When it is okay to not be okay, then you are okay. Why does your friend have a problem with you carrying, and why do you have a problem with your friends problem ?

The mistake was telling your friend that you carry. No one needs to know that. It's none of their business.

Herr Walther has it nailed down. I am very careful about who I tell when it comes to carrying a weapon. Generally, only my wife knows for sure

You might point out to your friend that bad things can happen anywhere, not just in big cities. Not many people had ever heard of Killeen, Texas...until the day that some nut drove his vehicle into a Luby's restaurant, got out, and began shooting everyone in sight. More to the point, there was a young lady in the restaurant that had a handgun in her possession. BUT, it was locked up in her car in the parking lot, because Texas law at that time did not allow CCW. She would later say that the moment came when she had a perfect shot at him, but since she was unarmed, that moment passed without effect. This lady had to watch, helplessly, as the armed lunatic [who, curiously, did not let the law stop him from having a gun] murdered her parents. The woman, Suzanna Hupp, would go on to become a very outspoken advocate for CCW laws, and was instrumental in getting REAL "common sense" gun laws passed in the Lone Star state. Nonetheless, I'm sure she could tell your friend that a town's size has nothing whatsoever to do with it's potential for bad things to happen anytime.

I live in a small city with a population of around 14,000. For such a small city it still has its share of crime and we are only 70 miles south of Buffalo and get a lot of thugs that come down here from there. My friend, who also has a pistol permit and owns a glock 19 and a 22, has never carried the entire ten years I've known him. I got my permit last Sept and got my pistol Jan 9th and have been carrying on a regular basis since then, hence a big reason why I bought a small compact 380 as my first pistol. He gives me crap and says it's ridiculous to carry in this small city and uncalled for and that basically I am being over paranoid and there's no point to carry unless I go somewhere where it's called for. I've already told him the whole "I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it" and he basically just kind of shakes his head and laughs. Any of you guys ever deal with this grief or anything? Do you have any friends that ever do this to you? Quite honestly the chances of me ever needing my gun are slim, which I am happy about, but I am not HURTING OR BOTHERING anything or anyone by carrying it when nobody even knows, ya know what I mean?

How about:
"I am uncomfortable discussing this topic any more thanks." or the always good "You're right. you've totally convinced me,." and keep doing what you're doing normally.

Don't tell others. The first rule of CCL club is we don't talk about CCL club!

well he was one of the ones that signed my application for me and being close friends I told him about the new gun I was getting and showed it to him and such. Nobody except a few close friends know that I carry. He IS into guns and does have his permit and 2 pistols, he also attended the police academy years ago and has training with pistols and self defense. He just thinks because we live in a small town that it's pointless. I agree with you guys and you make very good points to bring up. I am NOT going to stop carrying no matter what anyone says or thinks, it's my choice and my right. I could see if I was carrying illegally or something but I'm totally legal and legit.:)
