First time @ 100yard lane... Oh the disappointment :(

Sounds like ya both outta stop typin and get into the competitions then...

... and get paid..

And it would take more than 100yds to impress me.

If thats all you can do then you might wanna save your gas money.

Disco

There are lots of people who can out shoot me, bench rest shooters regularly make one hole groups.

You like distance? Zak Smith makes consistent hits on a silhouette targets at 1200-1400 yards with his .260. I'm sure he's had his share of one hole groups @ 100-200 yds as well.

Which Im well aware of nate...

.i believe it was you first calling me on my reply

which was not toward you.. it was to the op...which I believe is not a well seasoned shooter who has been in the military.

... you may both be able to outshoot me

.. i would probably still not be impressed.

also...

... if you have never had someone tell you that they can shoot smaller groups than what they actually can...

... then I guess you have also seen these unicorns.

I know plenty of people who talk about one hole groups..and I know for a fact they cannot shoot em.

... I have seen them come up short of their claims at my range and in person.

I bet a guy a dollar one time that i could shoot three shots at a 200 yard target, in 15 seconds, with my bolt action 7mm Mag and be able to cover every shot with a dime.

He timed me and I did it in 12 seconds, we walked down there and it was about a 5" group. He laughed, then I took out a dime and covered every shot with it pretty as you please. I just did it one at a time. :p

Dont do much over 125yds now... we do have a 200 and 400yd target...

... guess my eyes are little depleated with age.

.. cant do as well as when younger.

Fine accuracy and small groups are nice, but the average person shouldn't get to obsessed with it. A hunting type rifle that shoots an 1.5-2 inch group is plenty good for hunting.

Thanks to my father I started shooting big rifles at a very young age. Dealing with recoil an proper squeezing of the trigger is second nature to me. It wasn't till I got older that I realized the casual shooter has trouble dealing with the recoil of high powered rifles.

Cartridges in the 30-06 class from a bench give a jolt most people are unaccustomed to. Even if its not hurting them, after 5-10 shots in the seated position, they start to flinch. Learning to manage recoil and proper trigger control takes practice.

Also, not all rifles are created equal, even ones of the same model. Some rifle barrels shoot exceptional groups, some don't. I've seen expensive rifles that couldn't shoot less than 1.75" group no matter what you tried and pawn shop beaters that would turn in sub-moa groups with a little work and the right load.

Disco, settle down! You simply made the claim that most folks who say they can shoot 1-hole groups is a myth. I responded by showing that it is not a myth, and is actually quite common, with the right equipment and a bit of training. The equipment in my case is built specifically for shooting sub-MOA groups, unlike most hunting rifles that can range from sub-MOA to 1 or 2 MOA and still be acceptable. The rest of the accuracy equation comes from finding a load that is accurate in your particular rifle, and knowing skills like trigger control.

As for competition, I do indeed compete a couple times a year in local competitions. The last competition for me was on September 17 of this year, and I was one of three competitors to receive a perfect score. I placed 2nd in that competition, as time was the deciding factor, and the 1st place shooter had a faster time through the course. This particular sniper competition is held annually, and is attended by skilled shooters with resumes that include SWAT snipers, current/ex military snipers, and a mix of shooters with varying skill levels. I came in 4th place last year, and was very pleased with my placement this year.

The proof you seem to require:

As for bringing longer ranges into the discussion, I think that you are simply throwing mud against the wall to see what sticks. The thread started with what looks to be industry-standard 100 yard distances, and MOA measurements based on that distance. Why muddy the discussion with even more variables? Why not throw 1000 yard F-Class shooting into the discussion as well?

I shoot rifles mostly for fun, and I will occasionally post some of my best groups to show more what a sub $1000 rifle can do. I try not to be boastful about my posts, as there are a lot of shooters with skills and rigs that can put me in my place real fast. I also don't post my shooting turds online. I don't see a point in posting the myriad of MOA and MOA Plus groups that I've puked out of my rifle.

I apologize if my post has irritated you somehow.

P.s. My apologies to the OP for having taken your thread down a weird rabbit trail.

I have got to use that sometime. :D

Hello guys... no update since I haven't been able to get trigger time. I'll hope to get a chance this week before kid's school ends, then the time will get even more limited.

I've reading a lot and making my homework. I'm gonna start taking notes about what ammo I use. So far I've shoot with these (all 30-06 of course):

* Federal - Power Shok, 150 grain, soft point.
* Remington - Express Core-Lokt, 180 grain PSP
* Hornady - Custom, 165 grain, BTSP

I have no idea when I used which one, but I still have at least 15 rounds of each so I'll test next time. No idea what PSP and BTSP means but I guess they are all soft points.

PSP = Pointed Soft Point
BTSP = Boat Tail Soft Point

A pointed bullet will have generally better flight characteristics than a round nose bullet.

A general rule is that Boat Tailed ammunition will have a better BC (Reduce Drag), and will not shed their speed as quickly as conventional bullet shapes.

For close up and personal like 100 to 200 yard shooting the Federal - Power Shok, 150 grain, SP or the Remington - Express Core-Lokt, 180 grain PSP will do everything you need. Which one you choose will be the one that shoots the smallest groups with your gun. I'd reserve the Hornady - Custom, 165 grain, BTSP ammo for long range shooting, they really come into their own at about 300 yards.

I live over by Sea World and often shoot at the Titusville Gun Club Range off of SR 46 by Loughman Lake. There is a restaurant at the end of the road for lunch after they close the range at 1:00. Takes me an hour to get there, should be closer for you being in Seminole cnty.

The range has plinking, handgun, 100yd , and sometimes 200 yard shooting (mostly during the week).

As for sighting - 3 shots, then adjust.
I watched 2 guys do the one and move thing with 2 boxes of ammo - looked like a shotgun pattern on the target. Not 1 in the bull. I sighted in a new rifle & scope with 11 shots that day.

A lot of times we get antsy and push for perfect, messing ourselves up. I have a .357 magnum rifle I'm working loads up for. Found a 158 gr XTP load that cuts bullet holes at 100 yards out of a cheap H&R single shot. I did 2 3-shot groups... 2 bullets cut the hole and then pull the third off an inch to 7 o'clock - 2 identical groups. My fault.

As for cooling the gun - shoot 3 and then leave the bolt open and put it down for a couple of minutes. Some guys wipe the barrel down with rubbing alcohol. I just let mine sit.

If you are new to shooting - buy yourself a .22 and a couple bricks of ammo. The 30-06 is a beast to shoot much. The noise & recoil doesn't bother everyone, but it bothers me. A .22 has no recoil and very little noise - you will shoot better and can buy ammo for about $20 for 500 rounds.

Hi guys... Just to update a little. Went to the range today, shoot a group then adjusted the scope (thanks Japle for the help). Once sighted I leaved the settings alone and started getting groups like this one:

Group 1, ~50 yards

I'm happy and I'll practice practice practice :D
