FBI is officially moving back to 9mm. Awesome.

A couple things........ Bullet advancement has improved with all calibers so the 45acp and 40 has gained the same advancements as the 9mm.

If I was a LE or Military where I can open carry in a good sturdy holster, then I would carry the biggest caliber possible because the size of the gun doesn't matter. This is why my buddies in SWAT and LE are carrying either a full size Kimber 45ACP or Sig P220. It isn't till the handgun has to be concealed that caliber compromise and platform has to be factored in. Non of our rual local small departments that can carry what ever they like use the 9mm in any platform. Those days are gone regardless of ammo advancements. All use the 45acp, and 40s&w. This is because smaller departments are letting the shooters pick from a list of approved handguns and giving them a more active roll in what they can carry.

I sure hope the military does move back to the 45acp. Especially when your hands are tied and have to shoot FMJ. A modern 45acp by Sig, FN or HK would be about as good as you are gonna get for a combat pistol.. I believe a modern 45acp in a HK would probably be the last word and silence most of the discussion. Funny how there wasnt any caliber discussions between the 9mm and 45acp back in WW2 when both were used in real world combat shootings. I don't think any US GI wanted the to trade their 45 for a 9. ;)

I like the 9mm but when its in a small platform like a compact or pocket pistol. Then it makes sense because it is the largest caliber for its size restriction.

While the military moves back to the 45ACP.

The rumor that won't die. It's not going to happen, certainly not with sequestration meaning $1 trillion in budget cuts and even when resolved still $500 billion in budget cuts.

A lot of departments are still operating under a lot of misconceptions. Travis Haley, Chris Costa, Todd Green, Larry Vickers, the list goes on and on. The leading trainers at the most well respected academies in the country are using 9mm. If someone else wants to use something else rock on I say. But to just quote some local departments and say that "those in the know" as it were aren't using 9mm is incorrect.

Lots of Glock 17s and 19s in that list. Not a single XD. Hmm. ;)

For people who give a crap about how their firearms work in their intended role--killing armed men--there are a few pretty simple truths. When dealing with the Big Three, the 9x19, the .40 S&W and the .45 ACP, Placement > caliber & Quantity > caliber.

Put as many holes as you can as fast as you can in the most important bits of a person.

That said, the assumptions that a shooter is working with have a large impact on what gear they bring with them. A heavier weight round has better penetration against barriers and maintains its energy over distance. That is just how physics works. Bigger is always bigger, faster is always faster, etc. The .40 does have a pretty attractive mix of velocity and weight for a handgun round. Generally speaking, though, handgun rounds suck at killing. Bring a long gun.
