Favorite sidearm while hunting?

S&W 686P when deer hunting or simply walking through the woods.

If I still squirrel hunted, I'd carry my Ruger MkII .22LR. In fact, I've carried that as my only weapon before when squirrel hunting. It's that accurate.

Black Bear & Deer : .44 magnum

S&W model 29 with 4" barrel : 225 grain Barnes HP , Federal 300 grain hardcast , 255 grain hardcast Keith style SWC .

Deer : .357 magnum and 10 mm

S&W model 627 with 4" barrel : Barnes 140 grain HP , 180 grain hard cast , 158 grain JSP

Dan Wesson 1911 Razorback : Federal 180 grain trophy bonded SP , Underwood 180 grain HP , 200 grain XTP

Have two favorites......44 Desert Eagle (6" & 14" barrels)....and a Smith & Wesson Performance Center .44.

BHP.....

Because I deer hunt here in Bama, and the only thing dangerous I might come across are wild dogs, or wild people....and it will also put a deer down easily if I am having to crawl through the briars looking for a wounded one....and it looks good in a nice leather open-carry belt holster.

And the panthers.....

I would have no problem emptying the 13 rounds into a panther if one threatened me.....then clean my pants....but I would look classy doing it with my BHP at my side....LOL

I've never carried a side arm while hunting, but
then ,there aren't many big animals up here in Nh.

Same with my Ruger Standard (MK I)^^^^

But I wound up never potting a rabbit or squirrel as I was afraid it would spook any deer that might come out, so I went to a bigger/more defensive handgun....

I'm getting to danged beat up up carry any extra weight when I'm hunting, on the rare occasions when I do, it's a small cal. handgun along with a big game rifle or a 44or 45 to go along with my 22 rifle. Grouse hunting a shotgun is plenty for a three plus hour walk chasing pointers, I do drop 1 slug and 1 round of buckshot in my pocket incase the dog smells trouble.
