Favorite 45s (I know another subjective thread)

"The gunmetal is superior (I'm told) to that used in the original 1917 Army model that it's a later variation of."

Probably not so much the gun metal as much as changes/advances in how S&W was heat treating the frames and cylinders on its gun.

I'm really not much on the .45 myself (I prefer my 9mm's ) but I also believe that every American should have at least one in their collection. I've owned and sold several .45's trying to find mine and I finally found it with my S&W 1911PD Commander. My second choice would be a tie between the HK45c or Ruger P345.

Have to go with the Les Bear 1911,I think the XD45 is as good as any of the plastic gun's.Then my JM 625 S&W. Just can't fall in love with the polymer stuff like ya can the blued metal.

Springfield XD

Springfield XD.

OK, i know its not a 1911 style pistol, but I've only really had experience with two of them. My buddies Dan Wesson is really sweet tho.

Easy question and easy answer:

1. Favorite 1911A1 model 45acp: Springfield Armory basic parkerized GI model

2. Favorite Non-1911A1 model 45acp: SigSauer P220 (Prefer W. Germany model but not is OK)

3. What 45acp above would I recommend for home defense: No question - SigSauer P220

I love the 1911A1. One of the finest weapons available. But it doesn't compete with the Sig P220. Yes, if you do some work on the trigger, extractor, and ejector; it can be a great weapon. But it still can't compete with the SigSauer P220. Plus, the P220 has double action, single action, and a decocker. It is as accurate as they come and as safe as they come. Not saying that you can't conceal a 1911A1; you can. But I have seen first hand people who have tried concealing inside waist band; inside coats; etc... and the safety turned off when they were trying to remove it from the holster. The 1911A1 needs to be carried without one in the chamber if you're going to carry it certain ways; and if you carry it cocked and locked; then you shouldn't carry it certain other ways. The P220 has proven to be one of the most reliable and dependable weapons; let alone 45acp; in the world. Accurate right out of the box. And it will shoot anything you throw at it.

Perhaps thats close to my answer as well.

1) for 1911 go with my Wilson Combat Protector though with a Les Baer hot on it's heels.

As accurate but much easier to disassemble for cleaning: Sig P220 Earnest Langdon (better trigger than a std P220)

Favorite 1911 Style: My 5" Kimber Classic Stainless LE

Non-1911 Style: Don't know, never owned a .45 that wasn't a 1911. However, my friend does have a late '70's vintage Browning BDA (Built by SIG) that I would like to talk him out of.

Any U.S made revolvers, past and present. Some of them are very expensive like the S & W 625's. All can be used with full moon clips ( .45 acp ). Also .45 Colt will do.

Hi, BillCoe:

I really like the looks of your Earnest Langdon P220. Never seen one of those before. Are you interested in trading or selling it? If not, is that a special order P220 and how would you get one? Thanks, Rick

1) What is your favorite 1911 style 45acp?

I only own one 1911, a Taurus PT1911. I'm very happy with it and it is a great gun, but I don't think I'll ever be a huge 1911 fan or collector. My PT9111 is a very fun range gun and I have no plans to part with it nor stop shooting it, but I cannot claim to have the "1911 bug".

2) What is your favorite non-1911 style 45acp?

FNP-45, matte stainless! 14 round magazines, is a joy to shoot and 100% reliable with every hollowpoint brand I've tried in it. Polymer and stainless is as close to minimal maintenance as a pistol can get and it's mind-numbingly simple to field strip

3) Which of the above models would you recommend for home defense?

FNP-45 - I bought it primarily as a HD pistol. If 14 rounds of JHP .45acp is not enough to stop the bad guys (and I have reloads ready to go as well) once they are in the house, then not much else short of a grenade is going to help either.

I have two 45's and love both of them. Totally different machines but a delight to shoot either.

#1 Sig GSR 1911

#2 Springfield XD45 Compact 4''

I carry the Springfield because of size and capacity, Shoot the Sig for accuracy.
