Favorite 45s (I know another subjective thread)

A 1911 works fairly well for those with medium to small hands. The grip isn't nearly as fat as the high capacity pistols.

The best thing for you is whatever you're most comfortable with.

I'm biased, but I think my Springfield 1911 TRP model is one of the top 1911s out there.

While there are other great 45s out there, it really comes down to personal preference. To me, the 1911 platform is damn near perfect and haven't found a better platform out there.

Springfield Armory Mil-Spec (1911)
Springfield Armory XD
Glock 36
All above choices are due to price in the $500-$600 range and all reliable.

My favorite .45?

1911 style: Wilson Combat CQB (Commander size) 4" barrel (nothing better in my opinion).

Non-1911 style: Glock 21 (very dependable, accurate, low recoil).

Both will serve you well in any situation. The 1911 style .45 is a little easier to conceal and actually points better (just naturally) in your hand.

I don't really have a favorite 1911-style .45 ACP.

I think I like my S&W 4506 a lot better than my Springfield 1911 A1 milspec.

As for my ultimate top flight loves it bestest favorite .45 ACP?

My S&W 1917 Brazilian Contract revolver.

I agree with Mike Irwin. The 1937 S&W Brazilian contract .45 is the best of the best - maybe even before you factor in price. When you do factor in price, it's a hands down winner. The gunmetal is superior (I'm told) to that used in the original 1917 Army model that it's a later variation of. It's a very versatile gun. It shoots 45ACP or 45 Auto Rim. (Black Hills 45 Auto Rim 255 grain LSWC at about 800 fps would probably stop a truck.) These guns were very well made and are very, very rugged. Some are a little beat up from 50 years of hard service but are still great shooters. On top of that, they continue to appreciate in value.

1) RIA Tactical
2)Sig P220/S&W M&P
3)I don't believe in recommending a specific firearm for others, an individual should find what works best for them. I know people for whom any .45 would not be their best option.

My only .45 is the H&K P9S. I find it reliable and accurate, and I believe it to be the first of the polymer-frame semi-autos, which makes it of interest, and the roller-block action is fascinating.

Hard to find, and some people don't like the grip, whcih is a bit bulky.

Someday I'll get a real 1911 as well, I hope.

Favorite? Hard to choose

Favorite Auto Pistol in .45 ACP based on the Browning falling link design:

Colt commercial Government Model with high visibility fixed sights and a trigger clean up, or a Colt Commander (the lightweight version; the Combat Commander is the steel frame pistol) with the same modifications.

Favorite .45 ACP not based on the Browning falling link design:

Smith & Wesson model 1917 or commercial equivalent; barrel cut down to just in front of the extractor lug, sight remounted and action smoothed. Herrett's Shooting Star grips and lanyard ring removed. The S&W Model 1950 Target revolver in .45 ACP would be a great alternate.

As an aside, one of the great faux pas of my life was not buying a revolver. I found a 1950 Target in .45 ACP in a gun shop; some thoughtful soul had properly cut the barrel back to 4 inches and remounted everything cleanly. I 'had to think it over'...

I presume everyone knows the rest of the story?

Traditional 1911: S&Ws original Colts

Non-1911s: Sig P220, best buy - S&W M&P series (more rounds, up to 14 available, and adjustable grip size) with great accuracy.

House gun vs. CCW: size and weight count for CCW, and a very subjective issue is safeties other than your brian and trigger finger. For off the body house guns we prefer an empty chamber and loaded magazine rather than relying on safties. Our house guns are a P220 and 357 revolver.

My current favorite all purpose for all sized hands is the S&W M&P 45.

1) What is your favorite 1911 style 45acp?

2) What is your favorite non-1911 style 45acp?

3) Which of the above models would you recommend for home defense?

1) Colts series 70 full size or equivalent.

2) S&W 457/4516

3) Whichever one you shoot better. First shots count the most.

1) What is your favorite 1911 style 45acp?
My Kimber Stainless Ultra Carry with Crimson Trace laser.

2) What is your favorite non-1911 style 45acp?
My S&W M-25, 3 1/2 inch (it will get a Crimson Trace one day soon)

3) Which of the above models would you recommend for home defense?
Well....neither, really. By my bedside sleeps a Para Tac-Four (13 rounds of 45 acp). Double-stack 1911s get a bit heavy, but I don't have to carry it, so it's (for me) the perfect nightstand gun. Of course, I also have an 870 within reach :)
