Fanny Packs?

Everyone seems to forget the biggest advantage with a fanny pack, no way you're gonna expose your CCW, and have some anti call the cops on you. When I took my CCW class, my instruction couldnt recommend a fanny pack enough. His fav was the Galco Escort, which I now use. He got tired of going on many MWG (Man With Gun) calls which were valid CCW holders, but just dressed or carried poorly. When a LEO gets a call like that, they MUST (not SHALL) response accordingly. A fanny pack could save you a lot of grief. Just sayin.....

any guy sporting a fanny pack really should add the optional "man purse" to their wardrobe!
Get real...it is either one or the other. Wearing both would be tacky. :)
I wish it were more popular since it's a very practical way to carry all the junk that we need to have with us nowadays.
Why does it have to be "popular" for you to do it? Carrying a gun is not popular in any fashion you choose to do it. :)
I didn't know they had a strap to connect to the belt. Definitely a nice feature.
They do not all have that feature so you have to check. The Blackhawk ones do though.
Everyone on this thread, I'm sorry for the insult. It was wrong of me to post that.
If we are man enough to wear the pack, we can take it. Trust me....the fact that man is willing to wear one is a testimony to his manhood. :)

When I lived in southern California a fanny pack did say "GUN". Many BG would order everyone to drop there fanny packs. What are you going to do if that happens to you. They are nice and comfy but I prefer a IWB holster just for the above reasons. Just my two cents! :D

Wow, it must have been very traumatic to have been involved in so many bank robberies that you have first hand knowledge of this behavior.

I use a "Unisex Everyday Bag" from E. S. Ramey. I put a laptop strap on it so that it rides right under my right hand.

The holster can be adjusted for any angle of draw you like and the zipper for the gun compartment is lockable (better than nothing but not much better).

Love to see a real laptop bag with that holster. Would be very handy

I saw the safe packer while digging around on the internet today and I got to say ....I like the idea of it!

+1 Safepacker. I have one that holds my 1911 and find it to be a very nice alternate carry option.

I never could get used to a fanny pack. Not comfortable with how the weight hangs on the waist; feels better with the weight over the hip, but then the pack takes a curved shape and doesn't take large straight objects; seems always in the way when sitting down, getting in/out of vehicle, etc.

Have used several different shoulder bags and back packs, none specifically designed for ccw. Stuff packs better, the weight carries easier; the bag is easier to sling on/off; and I feel I have better retention in a crowd.

- just me....

I carry my wallets in rear pockets when I use my fanny pack because I have cuffs and other police-y stuff in front pocket of fanny pack. I also like to be able to acccess my credentials quickly.

Fanny packs have their uses. It's not my primary carry method, but sometimes it's the better of the choices I have available dependent upon the day's events or environment.

I recently changed fanny packs and LOVE this new one - once I modified it some :).

Here's the pack in question:

Yes, it's a cheapo. And it has one huge flaw: if you wear it "front and center", the single (somewhat cheap) snap goes to your center back where anybody can come along and unsnap it dropping the gun to your feet. Ack. If that wasn't bad enough, if a cop asks you to disarm, in order to take the fanny pack off you have to REACH AROUND TO THE SMALL OF YOUR BACK, guaranteeing he/she will draw down on you.

So you have to re-do the straps: go to a military surplus store, get some good strapping and a better clip and re-do it so that the unsnap is directly to one side or the other of the holster.

Here's why it's worth retrofitting and using:

In the lowest pic you can see that while there genuinely are three compartments (and the two smaller ones are independently useful, one zippers closed while one velcros), the main central compartment has a hidden "alleyway" that goes behind both of the two smaller pouches, invisibly.

So while your central pouch LOOKS like it's only big enough for a J-Frame snubby or a small .380, the reality is, I can hide my Ruger New Vaquero with a 4.68" barrel (basically Colt SAA size) in this thing NO problemo.

It could easily hold a full-size auto up to at least a 5" tube and possibly a longslide 1911 6".

You only use one "alleyway" at a time, when setting it up for either right or left hand draw. I found that it was also useful to take the internal velcroed "mini holster" and once set against it's velcro background, sew it into place with 20lb test fishing line so it can't "droop". This gives you quicker access to the grip.

I bought a black one at a gun show, slapped a 3" wide peace sign front and center as "liberal camo" and it works GREAT. Reasonably fast access and a lot of "where the hell did that CANNON come from!?" factor, which in my book has "psychological warfare" value.

I paid $25 for it at a local gun show and another $10 to retrofit the strapping. Recycled the peace sign from my previous pack (because hey, that's where I keep my "piece", plus it's a "Peacemaker" near-clone). Worth every penny.

Who said anything about bank robberies? Are you saying that when you see someone wearing a fanny pack that you don't suspect he is carrying a gun?

If thats the case then you need to go back to the academy or where ever it is that you gained your wealth of information!

Okay, maybe it was muggings, but it still must have been traumatic. You stated that bad guy's regularly order people to drop their fanny packs. I assume you have some basis for this claim and didn't just pull it out of your backside. :)

Working the robbery table in Wilshire Division L.A.P.D. for a number of years I would handle over 20 robberies a week. We would also keep apprised of M.O. from street robbers around the county to connect possible suspects to more than one crime both in and out of the city!

What do you base you knowledge on? Hugging Trees!

I guess I have to be honest when I see a guy with one I think gun...but maybe thats because thats what i'm into...peolpe that are not in to firearms and such might not think that...Also my father has one but its got meds he needs and a camera because he's always around the grand kids and loves to snap away! I too like the idea of them but have yet to try it.
