Fanny Packs?

I have a father in law who is a police officer and off duty all he wears is a fanny pack with his full size Glock .40 in it. He needs a new one for his B-Day any suggestions. I have my CCL and wear OWB holsters, he will not let his fanny pack fetish go. Are there any "manly" ones? Thanks for your help.

So if somebody will only use OWB holsters, do they have an OWB "fetish?" I've known quite a few people with 1911 fetish or S&W fetish. Maybe people just find what works for them and then they are happy with it!

I always carry my CCW gun in a Wilderness Safepacker. Normally on my belt strong side. Sometimes a S&W M296 and other times an HK P7M8. Same size works for both.

I've been carrying mine for over five years now. Guess I need to tell the wife that I officially have a "fetish!"

I saw the safe packer while digging around on the internet today and I got to say ....I like the idea of it! It makes me want to buy one to try it out but they do look awfully big and bulky on the belt for a full size pistol. Disclaimer: I only stated he has a "fetish" because he is stubborn and will not try anything else.

Buy him a hot pink one. Black fanny packs on a guy scream, " I have a gun in here!". But a hot pink fanny pack on a guy says something else entirely.:) Bonus is he'll have to wear it when you're around at least once since it's a gift. Just have the camera ready.

Seriously though, the Roma pack like the one here is nice and since it's brown leather it doesn't look as obvious as a black one. http://home.comcast.net/~shooter2_indy/roma.html#pack. They make a good point about carrying your keys and other stuff in it. Available here http://www.red-diamond-unif.com/roma.htm. At the store site they also have belt concealment bags in nice leather. This is kind of like the safepacker idea but not made for wilderness carry.

Although not specifically designed for handguns I really like the bags by Pacsafe. They have a wire in the belt and an interior wire mesh panel so they are slash proof and they can be locked shut. http://www.pacsafe.com/www/index.php?_room=3&_action=detail&id=19

How big and bulky is going to depend on how big a gun you want to pack. I got the one that exactly fits a P7M8 so it isn't huge. More of a medium size.

They are very well made. Mine doesn't look new after years of daily carry but absolutely no torn pieces or hanging threads.

I love the way they can be worn in different ways depending on local conditions and personal preference. I do mostly wear mine on the belt at 3:00 or so. (Depends on the belt loops on the pants. On my Carhartt jeans, there is a loop at 3. So I wear it behind that. 3:30 to 4:00, I suppose.) I also bought the fanny pack belt thingie. The Safepacker opens and then closes around it. Also some velcro. You end up with something that is much more of a conventional fanny pack. If you are wearing shorts with no belt, that's the way to go. In the winter when wearing heavy coats, the belt carry can be problematic. So then I get out the shoulder strap. It snaps to the two loops at the top corners. I wear it across my chest with the Safepacker hanging under my left arm. Sort of a shoulder holster approach.

I need to get a couple more in different sizes! I love the darn things.

If that doesn't scream "I've got a gun in here" I don't know what does.
Get a grip. The vast majority of the public does not associate fanny packs with guns. Millions of fanny packs are sold every year that do not have holsters in them. If you think you are seeing a gun every time you see a fanny pack you are deluding yourself. And who cares if some people might assume you have a gun anyway?

I dont know, unless you are in a touristy area, fanny packs always scream to me, "hey look, that guy probably has a gun in there". Sorry; off topic. Continue ;)

"LOL. I didnt see that someone else already posted that they have the same idea when they see a fanny pack."

Especially when you see that they have their wallet in their back pocket, their front pockets loaded with stuff, and a cell phone on their belt. If they aren't carrying their wallet and phone, two of the bulkiest things to lug around, then what are they carrying, a box of Crayola's and some chapstick?

Why would you put your wallet in your back pocket when you are wearing a fanny pack holster? Have you guys ever even seen someone with one or just being contrary?

Yes, I've seen a few people with them. Wallet in back pocket every time. One individual had his fanny pack on with a shoot me first vest too.

Wow, guys thanks for the input. Man I have to say that I agree with both sides of this argument. I am six foot and almost three hundred pounds. I think that I would look better with a pink one for sure! Now that being said, My father in law and all his "cop" buddies all wear these things and swear by them, so that makes me want to try one out. Thanks for the hilarious comments man I was crying when I read some of these......hahahahahahaha

I think it's an ok carry method but I would use any color but black. I have one of the older models from Pacsafe. It's a small rectangular orange and grey one that I use when camping. My P-3AT fits perfectly in the back compartment and my wallet, phone, and other odds and ends fit in it as well. Much easier than trying to keep everything in the pocket of cargo shorts while sitting in a camping chair and the orange color is obviously noticeable but it doesn't say "holster" it says "dork" and I'm ok with that.

My only real concern is the ones that don't have a slash proof waist belt. The fanny pack becomes a target for thieves to slash the belt and run. Instead of just getting a wallet and camera they get a bonus gun in the deal.

They have straps on the back of the pack that connect it to your belt. Plus, they are not something you are not going to notice someone removing. One could easily argue that it would be easier to take someone gun from their holster than from their fanny pack.
