Extreamly Paranoid or Being Safe?

So, it's paranoid to carry a handgun on one's person while in the house... but it's NOT paranoid to stash guns strategically around the house?

Interesting.

I guess if you aren't paranoid, then you don't worry about kids or burglars finding your stashed weapons.

That makes sense...

So this means that I'm paranoid for leaving my home every day in CCW mode? I'm glad I'm "not normal" just the means to protect myself if need be.
I CCW, nothing wrong with that. Note the caps on the word 'always'. When you ALWAYS carry- in your house, in the shower, on the toilet, etc, that is not normal.

No sure if this is directed at me, but FWIW, I don't have a safe. Right now I can't afford a safe, at least not one big enough that a burglar couldn't carry out of my house. My guns aren't 'strategically' stashed, I happen to keep a pistol in the bedroom, another in the computer room, and a shotgun in a closet. Since we have no kids, and no one else's kids ever come play in my house, and since I have no way to keep my belongings from being stolen in the event of a burglary anyway, I keep things where I keep them.

Different things work for different people and I am not trying to judge anyone. I just feel that if you ALWAYS, literally, ALWAYS have a gun WITHIN ARMS REACH, literally, WITHIN ARMS REACH, then you might be a tad paranoid.

Ok, so if you had kids, what would you do? Maybe lock the guns up somewhere and keep one handy (on you somewhere) to be prepared but ensure the kids safety? Would make sense to me, but then would you be one of the paranoid "carry in the home" type?

It's just like if someone wears a helmet 24/7 or always has a fire extinguisher at arms length, it's an extreme behavior.

Not even close to being comparable. I wear a helmet while I ride. I'm not thinking about falling off my motorcycle in the house. I keep my fire extinguisher where a fire is most likely to start (kitchen). I have an idea of when and how I would need my helmet and my fire extinguisher. I have no idea when or how I would need my gun. Best to have it on me where I am in control of it, and it's there in the off chance that I need it. For me, it's in my pocket. I rarely think about it.

I have lived in many states - both in small towns and major cities and I have NEVER felt the need to carry a gun into the shower, out into my garage where I reload, or while mowing the lawn or sitting at night in my living room watching TV...............made it through all those calm areas and high-crime areas without the paranoia that many seem to feel is absolutely necessary to survive here in America

Sorry, loosen the tin foil hats folks, life here really isn't that bad....

If you carry more than me you are paranoid.
- Charles Schumer

Not really, but could easily apply to any anti-gun person.

if there are no kids in the house then it's ok to have multiple guns throughout the house. Some people also don't lock the guns up and have kids. I myself prefer to have something to lock them up due to my kids.

Just have face the fact that some people's definition of paranoid is warped. But I suppose I'll loosen up a bit because YOU have had a blessed life. So happy for ya!

Younggunz4life, even if there are no kids, stashed guns are also available to burglars. Safes are good things. So are holsters.

I'll clarify my responses. Shower, throne, and other bathroom duties no carry so I don't carry "always". On me or in arms reach because of the random home invasions and living in a average FLA neighborhood. Home invasions happen in gated communities so in my little piece of paradise its also possible.

Keeping a loaded gun under your bed: normal
keeping one on you while you move from room to room: paranoid

You shouldnt have to be afraid of living in your own house. Ever

No more paranoid than having a fire extinguisher or a first aid kit. Are people paranoid because they carry cell phones these days?

I don't carry my fire extinguisher, first aid kit, or even cell phone from room to room.

Keeping a loaded gun near (correction) your bed: normal
keeping one on you while you move from room to room: paranoid

You shouldnt have to be afraid of living in your own house. Ever

Pretty much the way I see it. If you are afraid inside your own home, you need to move.

My home has been burglarized while I was there. Puts the fear of the Lord in you for a while. It passes. Lock all your doors at night every night before you go to bed. That was my mistake or they somehow had a key.

Home invastion facts from DOJ:

According to a United States Department of Justice report:
38% of assaults & 60% of rapes occur during home invasions.
1 of every 5 homes will experience a break-in or home invasion. That's over 2,000,000 homes!
According to Statistics Canada, there has been an average of 289,200 home invasions annually over the last 5 years.
Statistically, there are over 8,000 home invasions per day in North America
According to Statistics U.S.A., there was an average of 3,600,000 home invasions annually between 1994 and 2000.
----
This is published several places on the internet. My bet is that the home invasions have decreased a bit over the years thanks to us paranoid people that carry at home. Home invaders don't like us much, and can never tell when a paranoid person is about his/her home. You're welcome.

I also like these:

"If you carry a gun, people will call you paranoid. That's ridiculous. If I have a gun, what in the hell do I have to be paranoid for?" - Clint Smith

"Remember the first rule of gunfighting ... have a gun." - Jeff Cooper

"I'd much rather go to my grave never needing my gun, than go there wishing I had it." - Phil Dalmolin

This sounds like the antis that tell me, "if you feel you need a gun to walk down the street you need to move to a new city."

It isn't about fear. It is about reasonable caution. Bad things happen every where.

I don't carry inside the house anymore. When I only had the one gun, I would have it on whichever level of my two story townhouse apartment I was on. Now that I have a collection, and I'm living in the same apartment in a decent little college town in Montana, I have guns strategically placed. I have my bedside rig that never moves inside a quick access gunvault. In the 2nd floor office, I have another semi auto stashed. Downstairs in my living room that is open to the kitchen is another pistol. Since my two car garage is detached, and from the door I can see straight into my kitchen and living room, I have a gun stashed in the garage, as well as a pistol and a tricked out AK in the car.

One thing I do with these guns, is they are all (with exception of the AK truck gun) in a fingerprint access GunVault. Only my wife and I have access to them. They are rather well hidden, and there are never any kids around. Why have guns stashed? Reason #1 is so I don't have to carry all the time. #2-This half of Montana has a very bad meth problem, and many violent crimes have occurred for that reason alone.

My apartment is in an average area, but less than 100ft to a major roadway and two pawn shops with shady people within a block in either direction. With my apartment, I choose not to move because for its rent, it is one of the nicest apartments in town, and inside is everything I could want. Reason I have guns in easy to get to areas is because over the course of living here, I have noticed the landlord(also the contractor that built it) cut corners in his construction of the place. Some obvious, others not so much. Biggest deal is, I'm not sure my doors complete with deadbolts would withstand a kick or two. Also since it is an apartment, I cannot make any changes such as replacing the doors, or adding motion sensor lights, or adding an alarm system but the worst part of all is I am not allowed to have a dog.

There have been a few close calls with drugged out individuals either getting violent with their girlfriends outside of our apartment or trying to get into my apartment thinking that they were trying to get into their own house. In both instances I was able to rely on local law enforcement to handle the situations. It's not so much paranoia, but being able to protect myself and my wife, and more importantly when I'm not there, she can protect herself.

Edited for clarification: All guns stashed around in the gunvaults are stored condition 3 with the exception of the nightstand gun. (mag in, empty chamber.)

It's interesting to see how different people break it down.

I've got a friend who has guns stashed in every room of his house so there's always one close to him. It always seemed a lot easier (and cheaper) to just have one and keep it where it's easy to get to no matter where you are.

Really, these threads boil down to people saying that what they do is reasonable and what other people do is either paranoid or complacent depending on how other people's actions compare to theirs.

Call me paranoid, I carry in the house and out of the house. What good is a weapon locked up in the safe? In fact, I usually keep three in the house when I am at home, and often two in the car. My EDC and my .44 magnum for woods gun in the truck. The .44 magnum, the 20 ga with buckshot and my EDC SP101 .357 by my bedside with the doors locked, alarm on, and bedroom door doubled locked and barricaded.

What good do those guns do if you can't get to your home defense weapons before the creeps are on top of you with a baseball bat to the skull.

Once again, call me paranoid, but so I guess was my CCW instructor who was armed day and night at all times. I guess he is paranoid as well. Oh well, then he should quite lecturing and writing on home defense tactics then. But he did drill into us to always be armed if you have a CCW. What is the point otherwise.

I agree with that and utilize a safe myself(I also have a holster for each handgun). That being said, some people do choose to hide firearms systematically around their home and I have found many times they have it all planned out(as in it isn't haphazard like a drinker who just hides bottles everywhere from his wife and forgets them). If it works for a fellow gun owner and he/she is responsible, having these firearms nicely hidden isn't all that bad of a thing.

NO, try reading it again - there are folks who carry while in the shower, feel the need to have guns hidden in every room, and are certain they are the next target for some roaming band of (fill in the blank) that will come busting down the door, rape the women and children and - God forbid- steal their video game console

If you want to leave your carry gun somewhere else when you take a shower, then do so. No need to insult people (like me) who take their weapon with them to the bathroom when they shower, rather than leave it unattended in another room.

Some criminals wait for their victim to head for the bathroom.

I also have weapons stached so I can reach one which ever way I have to run. Rather than let an intruder get between me and a weapon.

When I'm home in the living room, where I spend a lot of time, my carry gun is two steps away. I take a shower, it goes with me. NO, I don't wear it in the shower.

Personally I'm getting a little tired of those who consider folks extreme because they take added steps for their own security. Whether it's carry extra ammo, stached weapons, etc.

always packing , ALWAYS

"So how many carry while they're in the shower or on the throne? "

@ twins ....uuuuuuh yip that would be me :o while I shower it hangs on a hook just above the shower door and when I take a dump it is still clipped on the inside of my pants ....
