Every American should be required to buy a revolver

I love revolvers and have a good 5 or 6 at least ;) BUT I do NOT want anyone to have a revolver who DOES NOT want to have one. I am specifically referring to people who are dead set against guns. If you don't want it, I don't want you to have it either.

This mandation sounds like a recipe for a lot of "accidents" from improper handling of firearms...

W73,

Exactly--and precisely because under such a hypothetical mandate warding off potential accidental discharges, misfires or just plain inaccurate shooting would be a major objective, it would make obligatory training necessary. Then you get into funding issues etc.--the mandate would open up a huge 'can of worms'... Don't get me wrong, I subscribe to the philosophy that the more people armed the better the society but there must be a prescribed 'gameplan.'

Now I've seen a lot of dumb chits, even ones that are legally quailfied, I wouldn't trust with a potato peeler let alone a gun ( and I mean A LOT).

But didn't a suburb of Atlanta already try this? Seems to me that a city councel passed a law stated every house should have a gun. They had no intent on enforcing the new law but crime rates dropped nevertheless.

I am not against some government mandates like liability auto insurance. That is a case where your actions can adversely affect another's ability to support his/her family or live their life as they see fit. But before we start something like requiring the purchase of firearms, the only thing that should be compulsory is the action of voting. Nuff said.

When I first started driving insurance was not mandatory, and an individual could purchase insurance against 'Uninsured Drivers'...

'Mandatory' anything is not the answer...

How about every American being required to have a hand grenade? Or a flame thrower. I've go a huge stump out back that's practically rock hard and laughs at my attempts to destroy it with ax and saw.

The gameplan should be voluntary. If one will (voluntarily) show up and qualify on prescribed courses of fire annually or semi-annually then one gets free membership at the local range and subsidized ammo, and ccw permit.

You can make the qualifications for it just like a drivers license. You have to be a resident of the State.

I was hoping you guys would see the obvious humor in this thread. Im not advocating anyone be required to do anything. I just said that to start off with some humor. I thought the joke would be obvious, but it appears some here are taking it seriously.

The real point of the thread is to show some love to the revolver and to demonstrate what a great firearm it is. I saw a lot of threads on here bashing revolvers and there was even one calling it "outdated". I cant disagree more. I believe its an essential tool for both home defense and those who carry concealed.

I already have a few, but, like medical insurance, I don't think anybody should be forced to buy anything they don't want ;)... If you want a Glock, get one ... If you're happy with the defensive capabilites of a Louisville Slugger, be my guest ...

I was going to make the very same comment verbatim the moment that I saw this thread but decided against it as I have been 'warned' by the mods not to be too political. That being said, I am glad someone did:).

Well, Captain Obvious, maybe you're not so ... obvious. But I got it.

Long live the revolver.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to breed much less own a firearm.

Wiith that said, those of us that are of the firearm persuasion should all own at least one revolver.

I can not agree more with the theory, and sentimentality of your post...

But, I DO disagree with the thought that what is 'best' for you or me, is 'best' for everyone...

If you get injured and only have one hand then grabbing a Glock might not help you. On the other hand the revolver will be there for you.

Wow... Really?

Whats the difference? Both Glock and a Revolver already loaded with one in the chamber will work just as well one-handed. Reloading is a different issue.

And you could have up to 17rds in a Glock or more in a Semiauto vs. your 6 in the wheelgun. Not hating here, but you're statements are terribly skewed.

Both are good guns. Its up to the person to make their choice and train with what they decide to carry.

Lets say you have one hand injured and a round either jams or does not go off in the Glock...then what do you do? You have to rack the slide or it wont fire and the same goes for any semi-auto. However, with a revolver if the round doesnt go off then you just pull, the cylinder then rotates and tries again on another round.

The revolver is really a one handed operation and is a good backup firearm to have. Its really a one hand no brainer operation. There is the cylinder with the rounds, you pull the trigger and blam. On the other hand with a semi-auto it gets more complex and there are jams especially with certain ammo. You need two hands to work any semi-auto especially when it jams.

Yeah, it was obvious that CaptainObvious was OBVIOUSLY joking! That's like saying that all people who have children must take a mandatory competency test. Well... wait a minute...

I digress. I used to love semis more than revolvers, but that's just because I didn't own any. Anyone who picks up a Colt or a Ruger can figure out in 5 seconds why many people prefer revolvers. Semi autos other than weird old stuff, clip fed top feeds, and 1911s are rather boring to me. This thread just reminded me that I need to pick up my first top break soon!

Captainobvious,

I agree with you in that the revolver is a great choice for many people for SD/HD/CCW. So I have nothing objectively or even subjectively negative to say about the wheel-gun for civilian use (LE and Military is obviously a different story altogether). In fact, I often recommend a revolver for people that ask for my opinion and believe that in 9-10 civilian situations they are entirely sufficient and provide a capable solution. The 1 exception out of that 10 example scenario would be for an individual that lives in or travels through areas of known high crime and gang related violence whereby the issue of capacity becomes of paramount importance (18 shots in my semi simply IMO provide me with a better chance of survival if attacked by a mob-like frenzy than the 5-9 shots afforded to me by any number of prospective revolvers--this even includes assuming that the speed-loaders work is same manner as a magazine change ). I openly acknowledge that some people will be of the opinion that my desire for higher capacity is excessive or even perhaps paranoid but everyone is entitled to their respective opinions. So therein lies my personal preference for the semi over the revolver.

Actually, I think every american should be required to buy and maintain proficiency w/an M-4 ...... such was expected of all free men at this nation's founding ..... alas, so much of basic responsibility has been passed on to the "experts" and "professionals" in Government Service of one stripe or another ...... but that is OT, and I digress.......

Really, though: I think all Americans should eat, pray, bathe, own guns, yes, vote, even.......

I just don't think they should be required to do so.

If you are going to require a purchase of a handgun by Americans, it had better be an M-9.

(I hate that gun, BTW.... it's not the thing, but the principle of the thing that is important.)

You should make an informed decision before you decide to keep anything around the house. Go to google news and type in something like weapons arrest or firearms arrest. You will find that criminals getting arrested for firearms offenses is not the exception.

My opinion is a revolver around the house represents good insurance against that criminal element which is armed to the teeth. You dont ever plan to use the insurance but its sure nice to know its there just in case.
