Every American should be required to buy a revolver

While Id rather own a toy gun than a Glock :p and I have no problem with revolvers I think the 38 would be a downgrade from the 12 GA at home.

I do think though that every american who doesnt have a religious prohibition should be required to have attended at least a two hour class and fired a firearm at least once prior to graduation from high school.. It should be a federal requirement.

Maybe I'll incorporate weapons training into my high school chemistry class  On the other hand, maybe not....

Personally, I'd rather be required to have a semiauto.

The state where I live makes me buy insurance. And someone wants me to be an obsolete type of firearm? They aren't cheap nor are they especially safe.

Why don't we require national service? We're all nationalists, aren't we?

Whats wrong with firearms training at high school? In the Boy Scouts we had firearms training and if you become an Eagle Scout the US Army gives you the PFC rank right when you come in. I trained my sons at age 7. Now if you are going to teach firearms safety to young children then the revolver cant be beat. A revolver is safe once the cylinder is swung out and its obvious to see when its unloaded.

I can see some inexperienced revolver haters already in this thread. Did you know that many plain clothes officers still carry a revolver? Many uniformed officers still carry a small revolver as a backup. If you get injured and only have one hand then grabbing a Glock might not help you. On the other hand the revolver will be there for you. There are no slides to rack back and there is no jamming. You can one hand the revolver all day long. If your 1911 jams up because of some Walmart ammo what do you do if your other hand is wounded? The revolver will fire that Walmart ammo all day long.

Not sure I agree with that; just people who might prefer semiautos. I started with revolvers 40 years ago, and now I like my semiautos, a matter of personal preference

Revolvers can, and do, malfunction

How many guys at the range are having malfunctions with their revolver? If your revolver is malfunctioning then I think you failed the test. Im not sure what test you failed but its obvious you failed something if you cant get that revolver to work correctly.

I've had revolvers "jam" and a jam is exactly what it was. But then I've had the same thing happen with a Sig. As far as cost, complication and reliability, in my experiences they're running neck and neck.

By the way, I owned three automatics (a C96 Mauser, a Luger and a Browning Hi-Power) before I bought my first revolver.

While agree that a revolver has its place with a firearm owner, it may not always be the best for everyone, and every situation. I currently own several revolvers, and I have had a few revolvers jam as well.

Stick me in the camp of letting those who want to own a firearm decide what is best for him/her. Those who do not want to own one, or are prohibited, should not be forced to go against their ideals or the law.

Hmmm, there seems to be at least one inexperienced autoloader hater in this thread too.

Did you know that many plain clothes officers still carry a revolver? Many uniformed officers still carry a small revolver as a backup.
I'm sure there are some.
But I'm willing to bet that there are just as many, or more, who carry a small pocket autoloader as a backup.
So this point is moot.

There are methods for racking the slide with one hand.
Do some searching on youtube and you can see how some are done.

Here are a couple to get you started...

Noo not every.. I have seen people who are nuts and wouldn't trust them with a gun.
I second that statement 110%! Way to many people out there I wouldn't trust holding/shooting a gun regardless of training. I do see the point you are trying to make as I am very pro guns myself (I assume most people who join this forum are) and also see a bit of satire in this statement given the recent events in D.C.

I have nothing against revolvers as I have only fired a few and never owned one so I have little to form an opinion on. I would imagine there are some semiauto, specifically glock, comments on here too that are based on "inexeperience."

P.S. I own a Glock but I don't think they are the end all, be all handgun manufacturer

Talking about shooting at the High School/ College level. When I was in high school back in the late sixties, I was in the ROTC program, and we had a 22 rifle range on campus at North Dallas High School. My, my how times have changed.

Well now, I kinda like the idea to require every citizen to own and train on a revolver. That should satisfy the requirement for a "well regulated Militia". It brings us to the level of crime inhibition that Switzerland enjoys.

Thank you, I have mine.

Now it does not limit you to one gun or to revolvers or from a nice shotgun, rifle, etc.,etc.

Man, I gotta chime in my .02 on this.

It is no longer a RIGHT to Keep & Bear Arms when you HAVE TO do it. So, basically something like a requirement to own/buy a revolver/gun kills the 2nd.

Well, there are rights and there are obligations. I guess Americans don't like having obligations.

Notice I didn't say laws.

Another thought. If someone simply does not care to have a gun or train to become proficient and SAFE with it, then I would prefer they just stay away from them instead of having one shoved in their hands anyway and then doing something stupid with it.

Sort of like mandatory military service. If people don't want to be in the military, the forcing them in there is not going to make that military any better.

I think the OP was being tongue and cheek with the subject, and making a rerference to the current healthcare bill fiascowhich forces you to buy health insurance. Just sayin......

Many are just taking this WAY too seriously. :D

I've had a brand new revolver fail once. Cylinder jammed on a Taurus I had for a total of two days. It was returned to the dealer and exchanged for a Ruger. That experience convinced me to spend the extra and get quality guns. Haven't had a problem since.
