Do NOT take your wife/gf shooting...

Watched her shoot DA, low to the right consistently, watched her shoot SA, right in the 7yd 10 ring. Bought her a SAO semi, and even though she likes a wheelgun, told her to suck it up, deal w the semi! She shoots FANTASTIC w the semi .25! Gonna move her up to a .40 when I can afford it.

I took mine shooting and she really got into it. So we went to the LGS and of course the one that she picks out is about double the price of my most expensive gun. We ended up getting her a Stoeger .410. A little more in our price range.

You may consider getting her a 9mm in lieu of the .40s&w, especially if she is recoil sensitive or (financially) if you guys plan to shoot alot of ammo. :D

FWIW I am just not a fan of the .40s&w. I just can't make myself warm-up to it despite shooting it several times nor am I very recoil sensitive. The "snappy" recoil (as it is often well described) isn't very powerful like a large bore revolver BUT it is "quick and jumpy." I think it's like someone intentionally engineered a cartridge with "just the perfect" recoil to annoy the bejesus out of me. Oddly enough, I have absolutely no problem with .45acp AND it seems like it's recoil easier to handle. The best I can explain it is that the .40 kinda makes my wrist do most of the work to prevent muzzle flip but the .45 pushes more "straight back" so my shoulder takes most of the recoil. Anyone experience this feeling???

P.S. Sorry to have gotten off topic there.

Also, I was talking telling a buddy of mine, who I hadn't seen in a couple weeks, about buying my wife her new gun (and about how she like the 1911 but didn't care for the .45 recoil) and he said.... I was lucky because his fiancé like the 1911 but had NO problem with the .45 recoil AND now what's to get either a Wilson Combat or Ed Brown commander size 1911 of her own.

Well.... "her own" BUT with his/"their" money. At least, she's not "wasting" it on shoes and stupid things. LOL

I feel the same way about 40 S&W, Edink.

I think it is because it is a high pressure cartridge with more bullet mass than 9mm.

I don't like 357 Magnum recoil forth same reason, but 44 Magnum is OK. I cN shoot more 357 or 40 without pain, bit I just don't like the cartridges.

It's all very subjective.

We would probably get accustomed to it and like it just fine if we shot it enough. The first time I shot 45, I didn't like it either. ;)

Hmmm....(he says as the light comes on).....maybe a business catering to shooting women(and some men:confused:) designing/making custom handbags and shoe's that match those custom Wilson Combat and Les Brown grips.:D

.25 ACP to .40 S&W? Kinda like going from a Datsun to a F-350, ain't it?

and about how she like the 1911 but didn't care for the .45 recoil

STI makes a whole lot of 9mm 1911's ...... and Springfield has their EMP.

My GF started with my .22s (Rifles: CZ, Handgun: Ruger, Buckmark, etc).
Now, she almost only shoots 9mm or .45. She likes my Kimber 1911 9mm the most BUT she does not shoot often enough to warrant getting her own 1911 nor too change parts on my 1911 to better fit her hand.

For all the internet angst over getting women into shooting, honestly I find it much easier to teach women the basics of shooting than men. Generally with women I find that if you explain why they need to do something a certain way they simply do it, while men seem to almost unconsciously fight against doing what they're told because they don't want to be seen being bossed around by another guy even when they know intellectually that you're the subject matter expert and they're not. I've seen this in everything from military basic training to just a casual range trip with the guys.

99 times out of 100 the weak link is the man trying to play instructor to the woman due to his psychological issues (or just not being very good.) The other 1 out of 100 is a woman who simply hates or fears the idea of shooting too much to overcome in a day, who is better off just left alone.

This story sounds familiar, except it was the family trip to the range and this played out with my mom and dad.

My dad had bought my mom a S&W Bodyguard 380 to keep in her purse since she commutes about 50 min either way to work daily. She liked handling it at the gun show, but didn't actually care for shooting it. So my dad let her try his Glock 19 and she was saying how she liked it better, then he handed her his Colt Defender 9mm that was his Christmas present and guess which one she liked the best...

My wife Karen has been shooting with me for the best part of our 34 year marriage. I bought here a left hand Savage 30-06, which she can out shoot me by miles. She owns 6 handguns, including a Springer loaded micro compact. I'm going to buy her (at her urging, of course :D ) a Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry and trade her for the Springer. She even bought a 22 pistol for plinking. We share our love of shooting and Ham Radio (I challenged her to get her license back in the 1980s, which she promptly did) and I think it helps us out a lot. I heartily recommend it!!

That's one of the few things I miss with my ex (shooting in particular in the great outdoors).

Other than that, I'm GLAD I'm free!!!

-Cheers
