Dennis Farina Arrested w/Gun in Luggage

I once tried to board an airplane with a hunting knife that I inadvertently left in my backpack. The TSA folks politely told me that I could either surrender the knife or I could mail it to myself at a nearby kiosk. I elected to do the latter, and that was the end of it. I felt like a fool, and, although I've never been so careless with a firearm, I can see how someone could be that forgetful.

Should forgetfulness be a crime, a felony, no less??? In a nation where we supposedly have a right to keep and bear arms? Unless he was legally prohibited from owning a handgun (and I don't mean failing to "register" the pistol), Mr. Farina should have been politely told to take his gun home and come back for a later flight. This is just another example of the evils of the "zero tolerance" thinking that has turned what was once the freest nation on earth into the world's biggest jailhouse. There are literally thousands of statutes on the books today that carry a criminal penalty, and there's no way any one individual is going to be aware of every one of them. This of course makes it much easier for people to be prosecuted for things like forgetfulness, but doesn't do anything to make the citizenry more secure.

Dennis Farina has managed to avoid a repeat of Big Trouble.

The actor will not face felony charges for attempting to board a flight at LAX earlier this month with an unregistered .22 caliber semiautomatic pistol in his luggage, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office.

Instead, Farina's case has been referred as a possible misdemeanor to the L.A. City Attorney's Office, where the matter is currently under review.

While he was originally booked for a lower-grade offense following his May 11 arrest, authorities bumped the charge up to felony possession of a loaded firearm after learning not only did the former Law & Order detective not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, but that it was also unregistered.

Farina, 64, spent the majority of the afternoon at Van Nuys Jail before being released on $35,000 bail.

Police said he was very cooperative and apologetic while in custody. Upon his release, Farina issued a statement to "apologize to anyone and everyone that I have caused any embarrassment or inconvenience to.

"It is my own stupidity to find myself in this embarrassing situation," the What Happens in Vegas star said. "I'll be spending the next few days kicking my own ass. No one is more embarrassed than myself."
