DAO most defensible type of gun for concealed carry?

If it may please the court...

I have a few points about some of the recent remarks;
In my area where I live a few sworn deputies & other LE officers have informed me that our State Atty Office or ASAs(asst state attys/prosecutors) ARE NOT sworn LEOs & have no metal badges or arrest powers in the state.
My local State Atty(an elected offical like a DA or Judge) does have a 5pt Sheriffs star & may have FLEOSA(federal law enforcement officer safety act) status to carry a concealed firearm since he also served as a elected county sheriff for over 10 years. FWIW; in his last re-election ad for State Atty, he used an old photo from his sheriff days. He was in a green uniform with a surprise; 1911a1 .45acp. ;)
For the record the Sheriff/State Atty was a commissioned US Army officer who earned a Bronze Star in SE Asia.
In the Commonwealth of VA & in PA, DAs & prosecutors ARE sworn in, carry badges & creds and are sworn LEOs.
The same goes for federal DoJ(US Dept of Justice) US Attys & AUSAs. The federal prosecutors also get formal Federal LE Officer payscales/COLAs(cost of living allowances), see; www.opm.gov .
As for the carry of LE sidearms or ammunition. I read & heard of the same Ayoob remarks. It's a worthy point for entry level gunners or those who want a "street legal" carry weapon.
The local cop shops near me use the SIG Sauer P226R 9x19mm, the Glock 21/30 .45acp & state troopers pack Glock .45GAP models. Some small PDs use Glocks or the P229R in .40S&W.

ps; As for the carry or sidearm caliber, I'd choose a .357sig or .45acp first. A 9x19mm or .38spl +P for deep concealment/BUGs.

I've been a 'local cop' most of my adult life. For about 15 years I was either carrying a 1911 or a 4" S&W Model 29, along with a shotgun and 94 Winchester in the car. Still carry a 94 to this day.

Very few leos out my way carry dao guns. Glocks are as close as they get to that. The local county Sheriffs are allowed to carry 1911s, Glocks, Berretta 92s, and a number of S&Ws (all steel) in 9mm, 40 and 45. The local cops carry S&Ws (none polymer) Glocks and 92s. The CHP also carry a number of guns. None of these are dao only except perhaps the Glocks may be counted there.

Yeah seems that if one is not used to firearms or can't make up your mind and wants to begin somewhere it's as good a place as any and better than some. Duty sidearms rarely make really good CCW pieces due to size, but they can be very good places to start learning gun handling and shooting skills. J frames and other small guns can be harder for many to shoot well.

Savvy carry...

Smart or savvy handgunners sometimes buy a full size duty gun then opt for the compact or sub compact for concealed-back up use. ;)
The action systems can be the same & they can use full size mags in either pistol. ;)
I'd say there is merit to a back up or 2nd gun having a DA/SA system to aid a armed citizen or sworn LE officer if they are wounded or due to illness can't fire a full DA only pistol in a critical incident. A PX4 C format with a DA-SA PX4 subcompact would be an example or a full size LEM type P2000 with a P2000sk DA-SA as a back up. ;)
For regular use(s) a DA only pistol would be best.

ps; I'd say the same for a J frame size back up like a 638 or a Taurus Protector. In a lethal force event you may be knocked down or your strong hand may be wounded. A single action or light trigger pull may be needed.

I agree 100%

Edit: Just in case anybody wanted to misinterpret that last line, I am emphatically NOT saying a live BG is a vulnerability. Shoot to stop; killing is incidental and not desirable.

I will say though sometimes this can be misinterpreted when people mean what you are saying. Obviously it warrants knowing how to best communicate about it.

Case in point, if you shoot to wound, use a .22, use a .44 magnum, etc, you are using deadly force whether you are trying to kill the BG or not. It equates to using deadly force. That is why sometimes I say that once I am commited to the shot, that I would be fully commited...I am using deadly force no matter what I do. Of course like you alluded to, we terminate the threat or stop the threat(which again can be misinterprted by people no matter what vocabulary is used).

all the best
