Concealed Carry Argument?

"Tell the person, that the criminal rate is higher with LEO's than it is with CCHP Holders."

DKA, could I have the source material and stats for that rather assine statement please?

Unfortunately, I lost the original citation, as well.
I believe the first time that was claimed was based off a study of NYPD officers and a study on CCW crime rates (might have been FL or TX).

Here is what I found during a quick search:
Concealedcampus.org packet said:
CCW/CHL holders are statistically LESS violent than the rest of the population. They are arrested for violent crimes at a rate
five times lower than non-license holders (even lower than police officers in many states).

*Texas Department of Public Safety and the U.S. Census Bureau, reported in San Antonio Express-News, September 2000
*FBI, Uniform Crime Reports, 2004 - excludes Hawaii and Rhode Island - small populations and geographic isolation create other determinants to violent crime.

What do you say to someone who wants to argue against the idea of concealed carry with you?

Nothing at all. If that's how they feel, I'm not going to waste my time and energy trying to reverse their thought process. Much akin to what sdj posted, once someone has made up their mind, they aren't going to welcome changing.

Luckily, I don't spend much time talking to people who would argue about this with me.

How about people who haven't made up their minds? Don't you attempt to point them in the right direction?

I was in an argument last night where my friend saw people being able to carry concealed weapons as meaning people will just start shooting people over stupid things.

Your friend is afraid of firearms. That's good; I am too. :) But he's not using his head

Does he see people run down pedestrians because they are in the way? Does he watch people get hit with sticks all day long on the sidewalk?

I'm guessing "no".

What your friend doesn't seem to realize is that owning a firearm does not equal being violent, and carrying one does not equal wanting to shoot people. Do cops trot around shooting folks over silly stuff all day? They wear openly!

Just like he never clobbered anyone with a baseball bat while walking to Little League practice or ran down Gramma and Grampa at the crosswalk. having that bat or car didn't make him want to use it to harm people for no reason

Even "good" shoots by CCW holders get them in a heap o trouble, at least at first

I don't argue about it. I don't have to, I'm the one armed. :)

Seriously, its always the same argument that CC leads to a "wild west" mentality and mass shootings over the number of items in your cart in the express line at Wal Mart. The facts and statistics simply do not bolster that argument.
However, I gave up on trying to convert people to my way of thinking long ago. If they want to be gun fearing sissies then that's fine with me. Like PbP's sig line reads.. You know where they will be running to when the "zombies" come.

Of course, as should everyone. I was referring to the dyed-in the-wool anti's. It is usually pretty clear from the beginning if you're talking to a hardcore anti, or just someone who has been duped by the media yet is still open to conversation.

They probably look at us the same way, not even bothering with those of us who they can tell are lifetime 2nd Amendment supporters, but trying to turn over those who will still listen to them.

Goodonya, 12GaugeShuggoth. I'm glad to hear it.

I sometimes have fun with the dyed-in-the-wool types if there are others present who are interested in a reasoned discussion. There's nothing quite so satisfying has making a public fool of someone who can't deal with the facts. A guilty pleasure, I admit, but a pleasure nonetheless. :D

Reply, "Does that include you? I need to know, to figure out If I can trust you when you have a gun in your hand."

Reply, "So do you mind if, when we get into a sketchy situation, I point to you and say It's okay to punch him, he's not carrying a gun?"

Reply, "So if I see someone about to knife you, or work you over with a baseball bat, you want me to stand aside and call 911 right? Cause up 'til now, I was all set to just shoot them, but if you want me to save my ammo, I will."

Reply, "You don't mind if I want to live, do you?"

Reply, "They make those laws so people like you won't crap their pants when you realize how many people actually carry guns. And then wet your pants too, when you realize how many of them do so illegally."

Counter argument, "Well, if you get into trouble, just dial 911. Then count to nine hundred and eleven. If the cops don't show up by then, just repeat steps 1 and 2 until they do."

Guns and CCW are very polarizing subjects where opposing views have their minds made up. Neither will listen to the other.

I couple years ago, at a popular motorcycle watering hole, I was wearing a Sigarms "Got Sig?" T-shirt. I was not carrying. As I walked by a picnic table, a guy asked me what a Sig was. One of the ladies with him stated it was a pistol. So he gets very aggressive/argumentative asking me why I find guns necessary. I asked him what was wrong with them. He kept being negative until I said that it was just a T-shirt and I don't understand why he was so upset over a T-shirt and unless someone changed the Constitution and did not tell me. There was nothing wrong with it, freedom of expression, etc.

Little did he know that he was addressing a retired law enforcement officer and Vietnam Veteran. Also, little does he realize that guns are a necessity in today's dangerous world. I did not make it so, but I do live in it.

As a newbie this is great food for thought on why I should never discuss my cwp with anyone except my instructors, strangers on the internet, the good man that passed the gun bug to me, and my children, who I am teaching never to discuss firearm status or any other aspect of our personal security out loud except in private. Getting a first cwp is very exciting. But using the thing should require discipline, starting with the ability to control my own disclosure thereof except when required by law.
