Concealed Carry Argument?

I won't be drawn into that kind of an argument. It goes downhill fast.

I find that people who make the cut to my best friends will be of such a like mind that they won't object to someone else carrying, even if they choose not to do it themselves. Most of my handful of best friends are of the sort that they will fight when confronted with the threat of violence rather than simply do what the police suggest and play along. Of course, about half of these guys are police officers. :D

I was in an argument last night where my friend saw people being able to carry concealed weapons as meaning people will just start shooting people over stupid things.

Just tell your friend to not do anything stupid and he will be OK.

I don't discuss CCW with people. A few of my family members and friends know I carry but most people don't. No reason for it. However, as mentioned the Wild West arguements don't hold water. Every state that has passed CCW laws has proven it.

Folks, if we don't discuss (and I mean a rational discussion not a temper tantrum screaming match) these issues the liars out there will win because, as is said "a lie, repeated enough, becomes the truth".

I'm not saying you have to engage, in-depth, every single person you encounter but when you hear a blatant lie it is your DUTY to address it the same as you would any other prejudice.

Now if somebody doesn't care to accept the truth, THEN you walk away because you can't teach a pig to sing, but at least you've discharged your duty to TRY and counter the lies.

Excellent post, ZeSpectre. I don't argue. I state my case and my reasons and I will engage in a rational exchange of ideas, but I won't engage in a heated exchange.

It's kind of like voting, folks. If you don't participate, how can you expect things to go your way?

Tell them if guns cause crime then all gun shows, Cabela's, Dick's, Gander Mountain, etc., should be littered with bodies of gun victims. Then point out that cities like Chicago, which has a gun ban, have some of the highest gun crime statistics in the nation. Also point out that if some BG breaks in to your home you call the police. Why? Because they have GUNS, and if they don't get there in time their job is to simply fill out the report over your lifeless body. You SHOULD have the right to defend yourself and your loved ones.

Tell him that's exactly the same argument that the Brady Group has used every time a state has considered loosening its concealed carry laws.

Every time Brady goes to the state capitol, addresses lawmakers, and says "BLOOD IN THE STREETS! MINOR DISAGREEMENTS WILL TURN INTO GUN FIGHTS!

And every time Brady has predicted it, it's not come true.

At this point, they've parroted the same thing something like 35 times, and 35 times they have been wrong. After all this time, they know what they're saying is no longer an opinion, it's a LIE. Yet they continue to use the same arguments, hoping to get people like your friend all scared and quivery and calling their legislators:

"PLEASE! DON'T PASS THIS BILL! I DON'T WANT MY BLOOD TO FLOW IN THE STREETS!" :barf:

You could also arrange to have your friend mugged and beaten up.

That usually turns a liberal into a conservative. :D

Also, moving to General Handgun Discussion.

Another argument I employ, as it particularly pertains to carrying all the time: It is not the likelyhood that I will or will not have to use it, but the consequences involved. I, like many people, may never be a victim of violent crime. Statistics are that I won't. But it's not the statistics, it's the consequences. If I carry a gun every day and never ever use it, then I've put extra wear on my belt and my back, but if I never wear the gun and do have to use it, I'm dead.
I also like the seatbelt argument.

T.A.Sharps wote:
What do you say to someone who wants to argue against the idea of concealed carry with you?

I was in an argument last night where my friend saw people being able to carry concealed weapons as meaning people will just start shooting people over stupid things.
Easy: Such incidents are so rare as to be statistically meaningless. For example: I live in a densely-populated urban area and in the seven or so years my state has had a shall-issue law on the books, I've seen only a couple incidents of a CPL holder shooting stupidly reported in the media. Even the then Attorney General of my state, a liberal Democrat who had been vehemently opposed to the new law, now concedes she was wrong. Now Governor, she has at least twice signed pro-gun-rights legislation.

Friend?

Sometimes in life we are forced to spend time with stupid relatives. However, stupid friends should be thrown away for smarter folks to hang with.JMHO

I like the seatbelt analogy. Everyone can understand it. It’s simple.

That's what I tell people also. You don't need a seatbelt 99% of the time either but when you do need it and don't have it, it's too late and you REALLY wish you did.

I have a c. c . since 1982 a lot of people didn't know .it's my buisness. don't tell . you will have when YOU NEED IT:D

  • In most states licenses are only issued to law abiding citizens
  • One cannot even draw the gun without commiting a crime unless he or she is in imminent danger of death or serious injury
  • In many states licensed carrers outnumber the total number of police officers--severalfold
  • Is self defense not to be permitted?
  • Are you under the impression that it is the duty of the police to protect individual citizens? If it were, how do you think they could possibly do that?
  • Have you noticed that almost every mass killing has occured in places where guns are not allowed?
  • Have you ever listened to recorded 911 calls and considred how much can happen as they go through the detailed questions that are necessary before they can dispatch anyone to help you?
  • Experts have concluded that "no gun" signs are magnets for deranged killers
  • Most criminals fear the armed citizen more than they do the police
  • The mere possibility that you may be armed contributes to your safety
  • It hasn't happened!

I also point out that where I live, we are at the intersection of two of the major drug arteries and that two adjacent counties are meth country--and explain what I've been told by LEOs about the danger of meth producers and addicts

Which state knowingly issues licenses to known criminals?

One cannot even draw the gun without commiting a crime unless he or she is in imminent danger of death or serious injury

I draw my gun every day, usually before I go to bed. :D

Yea Lol!

John Grisham once said concerning a disgraced judge that a Liberal is a Conservative who has been sent to jail.

I think that there is a wealth of information and studies out there that show an armed populace is a crime deterent.

simple

I ask "Who is ultimately responsible for MY personal safety?"

(Yes, I do the seatbelt-analogy thing, too....)

Many have pointed out the fact that the "Wild West" argument holds no water. Just wait until the main stream media gets ahold of an interesting story involving a lawful CCW incident and then hold on! We will all once again be labeled "Cowboys" and "War Mongers".

Mark my words, it WILL happen.
