Concealed Carry Argument?

What do you say to someone who wants to argue against the idea of concealed carry with you?

I was in an argument last night where my friend saw people being able to carry concealed weapons as meaning people will just start shooting people over stupid things.

One movie quote comes to mind...
" When you need it, and don't have it, you sing a different tune."

Well, most places require a permit to carry concealed. This will weed out the bad types, convicts etc. Whenever you hear about someone get shot by someone on a whim, do you ever read about the shooter having a ccw permit? This should help for at least part of the argument.

carring a handgun for protection is much like having a fire exstinguisher, you dont start a fire with one you put one out if need be

when i get asked... or argued at... or whatever... i refer them to this and let them draw their own conclusions..

Why I Carry a Gun

I don't carry a gun to kill people.
I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don't carry a gun to scare people.
I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid.
I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I'm evil.
I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government.
I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don't carry a gun because I'm angry.
I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone.
I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy.
I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a cowboy.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man.
I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate.
I carry a gun because if I'm unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don't carry a gun because I love it.
I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police Protection is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves.
Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take an ass whippin'.

Ask that person if he/she is willing to give up their car. I would say it safe to say more people "strap on" a car than guns...and kill more people with their cars than with their guns.

TA Sharps,

Myth: People do not need concealable weapons

Fact: In 80% of gun defenses, the defendeconcealable handgun. A quarter of the gun defenses occurred in places away from the defender's home.177
178Fact: 77% of all violent crime occurs in public places. This makes concealed carry necessary for almost all self-defense needs. But due to onerous laws forbidding concealed carry, only 26.8% of defensive gun uses occurred away from home.179
Fact: Often, small weapons that are capable of being concealed are the only ones usable by people of small stature or with physical disabilities.
Fact: The average citizen doesn’t need a Sport Utility Vehicle, but driving one is arguably safer than driving other vehicles. Similarly, carrying a concealable gun makes the owner – and his or her community – safer by providing protection not otherwise available.

Myth: People with concealed weapons permits will commit crimes
Fact: The results for the first 30 states that passed “shall-issue” laws for concealed carry permits are similar.
168Fact: The general public is:
• 5.7 times more likely to be arrested for violent offenses than CCW permit holders.
• 13.5 times more likely to be arrested for non-violent offenses than the than CCW permit holders.
Fact: In Texas, the general public is 14 more likely to commit a crime than a CCW permit holder. They are also five times more likely to commit a violent crime.169
Fact: Even gun control organizations agree it is a non-problem, as in Texas – “because there haven't been Wild West shootouts in the streets”.170
Fact: Of 14,000 CCW licensees in Oregon, only 4 (0.03%)

+1 Creature. Not to mention, background checks aren't neccesary to obtain a driver's license. What's more dangerous, a responsible gun carrier or an irresponsible driver?

You may point out that this doesn't seem to be a problem in most of the 48 states that allow concealed carry.

Since your friend seems to be the one operating under a misconception, challenge him/her to provide examples of CCW holders being involved in illegal shootings.Counter that with your own examples of criminals using guns to harm others...You'll have a lot more paper than he does, point that out to him...

The whole "Wild West" scare tactic is worn, and has been proven to be false, every time we "gain" our rights back from the state.

Look at GA for instance. MARTA riders were worried that the streets would run red now that we can carry on MARTA.

No such incident has happened, no will it.

MARTA

Ok, glad to hear that info... I would not travel on MARTA due to the safety concerns - now, you bet I will carry...

Amen! When SC first enacted their CWP, antis made dire predictions of shootouts at stoplights and gunfights in the malls - NEVER happened. In fact, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, there has not been one shooting in SC where a legal CWP holder was found guilty.

I like the seatbelt analogy. Everyone can understand it. It’s simple.
When people ask me why I carry a gun, I ask them why they wear a seatbelt. I usually get a blank stare as they try to switch gears.
Me: “Do you wear a seatbelt?”
Them: “Sure!”
Me: “Have you ever been in an accident where a seatbelt saved your life or kept you from being seriously injured?”
Them (usually): “No.”
Me: “But you still wear one?”
Them: “Sure!”
Me: “Why?”
They generally tell me there are lots of crazy drivers out there, stuff happens, etc. No one ever says they might make a mistake.
Me: “That’s why I carry a gun. There are lots of crazy people out there. Life is unpredictable. You can’t schedule emergencies.”

When people say, “Just give them what they want”, I ask them, “What if what they want is to leave no witnesses?”

Another analogy I like is the candy wrapper. When you want a Hershey’s Kiss, you have to take off the little foil wrapper. When you get it off, what do you do with it? You throw it away. Why? Because it has no value.
To millions of sociopaths and psychopaths in this country, you’re that little foil wrapper. You’re holding what they want. Once they have it, you have no value. To them, killing you is like throwing away a candy wrapper. They don’t think twice about it.

I do not intend to be that wrapper!!

Since the last anti gun bans expired and CCW states have multiplied, the national crime rate has gone down more than 30%.

Every month American Rifleman magazine has a page dedicated to those regular citizens who prevent crime. Some are CCW cases and some aren't. Every case listed is an inspiration and proof positive that armed citizens can and do successfully step in when law enforcement can't be there. Typically there are 8-10 cases per month as I recall.

Another thing... When I was 13-14 I had a pistol held against my head in a restaurant in Portland, Oregon. Obviously I survived the event as the drug addict was just demonstrating that he could kill me if he wanted to. This was part of his sales pitch as he was trying to sell the pistol to restaurant patrons presumably to get his next fix. Put any honest citizen in this scenario and have them actually live through it. I'm betting most people that don't understand concealed carry would become real clear.

The police showed up as my mother and I were walking to the car (in a hurry). They can't always be where the bad guy pulls his gun out.

Why argue at all? Just let them know that you believe it's a choice everyone should make for themselves. Let them know that you do not fear legally armed citizens and leave it at that.

Vermont allows CCW without a permit and it is one of the safest and crime free states in the union New York hardly allows CCW where is their crime at. end of argument.

I don't argue with people who feel that way. Its a waste of time. It simply comes down to them having their opinion about firearms and me having mine. A very good friend of mine told me that "guns were made to kill people". My cousins teach their young children that "all guns are bad". Not the people who choose to use them to commit crimes but the gun itself. GEEEEZ! As Roseanne Roseanadana would say. "It just goes to show ya" you can't reason with an unreasonable people.

To me concealed means concealed, including verbally. Besides, the more somebody want to argue, the less I'm inclined to say, instead leaving them to their opinions. I live my life, they live theirs, and last one to the finish line after the most satisfying life wins.

I don't argue it.

First and foremost most folks I know have no idea I CC (even some of my close friends and extended family) and the ones that do, know I do. End of discussion.

two out of three of my best friends don't specifically approve of concealed carry, but know/trust me well enough to be confident that I can carry/use my firearm responsibly.
