Church Carry

In Texas churches are like other private locations. You are free to carry absent a 30-06 sign, public warning, or linkage to a school.

Carry in church is OK in Florida, too. I carried regularly until our church decided to have the pianists wear robes, so now I have to take my jacket off and don a robe without privacy. Thinking about adding a little pocket something to my carry options.

Have you considered IWB as an option?

I pocket carry a P238 or 642 depending on what type of suit I am wearing. The women in my church are huggers and I am a church officer so I get and give a lot of hugs :) One sunday a lady hugged me and asked was I carrying. I told her no (I actually was not carrying that particular sunday). I had left it in the safe in my car. Luckily, she felt my cell phone which was on my belt under my suit coat :D

I don't care what the law states, as pastor of a Methodist Church I told my trustees the church would abide by policy which dictates that all Methodist churches are weapon-free zones, which means no firearms CC or otherwise.
I respect that. I also respect that I would choose another church over that.

Not meet them with a paranoid, judgemental attitute and a pistol.

I meet everybody with a paranoid, judgmental attitude and a pistol in my pocket. Sure, I want to be friendly, accommodating, and charitable, but the way a person presents themselves is the way that they want to be presented. If they present themselves in a manner that is societally unfriendly, who am I to second guess their intentions?

In God we trust, but I want to see everyone else's hands.

Thanks, but yes, IWB is my standard mode of carry. Changing from jacket to choir robe in a crowded room, the grip, the top of the holster, and the belt straps are going to be exposed for a few minutes.

Here's a grin after the earlier posts - I am a Methodist.

It's just that I worry about the image of gun owners (and you should too) and some of these reasons being used as justification to carrry in church sound unreasonable to me and I'm 110% pro gun.
I understand exactly what you're saying and I think it's a mistake to list all the places one visits and then try to come up with reasons to justify carry in each of those particular locations.

I carry everywhere it's legal to carry and that makes things very simple. I don't have to try to come up with a rationale to carry in a particular place, if it's legal I carry there.
o ye of lil faith
It's actually quite offensive to make this sort of statement since, of necessity, it involves impugning the faith of any person ever injured or killed by a violent attacker at a church activity.

I know several Deacons and members that have carry permits..that carry at our Church .. including myself ...without getting political .. Christians have a common enemy ...
This my carry gun S&W 642 loaded with Federal Personal Defense 38+P 129Gr. Hydra-Shocks

I am an Elder in my church and have carried every Sunday for years. I wouldn't think of going to church without my weapon. I'll be serving communion this Sunday with my primary and my BUG. Pray I never need them but it'll be there if I do.

Religion under assault.

I'm a non-practicing Roman Catholic. It seems that all religions have their share of haters, be you a Christian, a Jew or a Muslim. We had a kook walk into Our Lady Of Peace RC Church, Lynbrook, NY, during a weekday mass, shooting and killing the priest and one parishener---happened about seven years ago. Perp used a .22 cal RF rifle as I recall.

As NY is a non-shall issue CCW state, I actually have greater carrying privileges being retired law enforcement. I can carry anywhere except federal buildings, courts and schools and retailers don't have the "no guns" sign option. Religious institutions are prime targets. I always carry when I have to be in one. I plan to keep my soul firmly attached to my butt for as long as possible.

I have tried to start carrying no matter where I am if it is with in the law. The one time that you don't have your weapon will probably be when you need it most. I wouldn't feel bad about carrying in Church one bit...

Seen it before. Junkies hanging around churches looking at the offering plate, trying to identify who is going to make the trip to the bank's deposit box. When I see stuff like that I usually tell a deacon immediately. Somebody gets out and talks to them about the bible. That's usually enough to disrupt their "surveillance operation" and they go away.

About carrying in church, check local laws and clear it with the pastor. Depending on what your church does, keep in mind you might have to hug a lot of people and you don't wanna scare anyone if they notice your gun. Ankle might be the way to go.

This is a great thread! I've always got my gun in the truck while im at church but really haven't thought much about carrying it inside with me. After reading this thread i think i'll start carrying while inside, you never know what might happen and it's no good to me if it isn't on me.

"church"

See to me you can substitute any location in place of the word "church" as the location is completely moot when it comes to 'potential' acts of violence. A shooting in a church, store, gas station, 7/11, ballpark, park, gym, etc... happens someplace all of the time. This thread has been effective to me only in terms of why we should be carrying everywhere, church just being one place amoung them.

-Cheers
