Good spot to start your tech knowledge.

Interesting read, and it clarifies choke pattern and shotguns in general as far as pattern etc.

Huntering and flyfishing.

Using a 28 gauge is pretty refined for starters, it is giving the bird a better chance and the one that you did get is going to be relished much more. Not as much recoil either which would be good for the VP.
To Hunt and give the bird a better chance due to your shooting capibilities and the capabilities of your shotgun. Using the newer magnums gives the 410 a similar "shoot" as a 28 gauge of old.

I'll bet the VP's gun was an expensive, numerous barrels, and no poly choke on it. I sure would like to know the gun.

Logger, I will be the first one to admit I am far from an expert when it comes to shotguns. I shoot mostly handguns and rifles. However, I was joking. Geez.

by houndoga: 28 gauge gun must be at least twice as big and powerful as a 12 gauge, right?

Man you probaly gonna catch it with this post. Shot gunning 101::: Gauge, in shot guns is, except for the 410, is the number of lead balls, at the diameter of the bore, that it will tale to weigh one pound. So a 28 gauge takes 28 balls and a 12 gauge takes 12 balls: so the 28 gauge is much smaller than a 12 gauge.

I think he knows this. He started with:
Good point Lizzy.
referencing her post that said
I also want to comment about how the media keeps refering to the shotgun as a 28 gauge. You and I know that it is a small shotgun diameter. How many people in the general public know this? Most folks have heard of a 12 gauge from movies and TV shows. I wonder how many think that the VP was using some monster size gun? I haven't heard a news story even trying explain exactly what a 28 Gauge is.

28 is higher than 12, 12 gauge wire is larger than 16 LOL

What difference does the gauge make? He used a 28 gauge. If he had used a 12 or 20, more pellets might have hit the victim, but that would have been the only difference. There seems to be a misconception around here.

All shotguns shoot any given payload at approximately the same velocity. The distance traveled by the shot is also about the same.

If someone was to fire in your direction with a low base eight shot load, and you were standing one hundred yards away wearing heavy clothes, your
damage would be the about same regardless of gauge.

Logger just trying to keep it straight for you.

Last bit of news regarding the Cardinal rule on hunting.

Face And Neck

According to the news, he was hit in the face and neck. That would also explain the seriousness of the wounds. If he had been hit in the body or legs, he might not have needed much treatment.

I have been peppered by birdshot. I was wearing a few layers of clothing that included a hunting vest. Once I got hit in the back of my vest. I heard the impact and felt nothing. I have also had birdshot raining on me while dove hunting. I could hear shot falling around me. I always look down for a few seconds to avoid that one in a million eye impact.

All sports, including hunting, have some danger involved. The goal is to minimize them as much as humanely possible. Total elimination of dangers is impossible.

I just watched a CNN video clip from outside the hospital where they explain what Whittington was shot with so "non-hunters can better understand". The CNN 'reporter' then shows a high brass 12ga shell and proceeds to dump out several copper plated 00 buck shot pellets. In an ill-fated attempt to be 'fair' he did say 'these are slightly bigger'.

Hope this works CNN Video Link

In other photos on CNN, likely stock, they show Cheny and a group bird hunting and all were wearing both blaze orange coats and hats.

BP78, I wish I had seen that.

If the VP had hit that guy with that load at that range, he would have been in a morgue, not in a hospital.

The news said tonight that all the hunters were walking in a straight line, and the guy left the line to retrieve a bird. This they claim was against the ranch rules for hunting. Cheney swings the gun up to nail a bird and there's a guy standing where he shouldn't be standing. It's a hard thing to call. Yes he should have been looking, but how are we supposed to look where the barrel swing goes while still keeping an eye on the bird?

come one okie, basic shot gunning, one does not look at the barrel one looks at the target. If the gun fits the barrel will line up with the target, if it don;t you "fix it."
Those pic I saw on tv of the hunters lined up. I would venture to bet that they were "file" pictures of a phesant hunt instead of a quail hunt. ;) I have never seen anyone hunt quail in that manner, never even heard of it but of course I could be wrong. :p

Now if a little boy gets arrested for bringing sugar to school and charged with a felony, how much time do you get for shooting a top dog lawyer? They would have us in chains, for attempted murder.

I think one of the best stories regarding Texas Sheriff's attitude about this very subject is in this 2002 edition of "LawDog Files".

Unless it was a typo in the news, The vp was using a 28 gauge? Thank God it was small caliber. Who goes out there with one of those to shoot birds?

Very few of us can identify with the type of quail hunting Dick Cheney does nearly every weekend. He has hunted quail for longer than many of us have been alive. I am sure he has hunted some of the best quail hunting areas in the US with some of the best guides and dogs. I am also sure he uses some of the highest quality firearms available. A 28 gauge is a VERY popular gun among quail hunters of Cheney's caliber (pardon the pun).

I've never been on a quayle hunt, but I'm not aware of their being a "quayle hunt" exception to the basic rules of firearm safety. Ultimately the guy pulling the trigger is responsible for where his shot/bullets go. Seems to me that, at best, Cheney is guilty of a ND.

Having said that, it does piss me off that some people will try to use this unfortunate accident for policitical purposes. Whatever you may think of Bush, Cheney, Rusmfeld, Republicans, Tom DeLay, Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh (and I for one don't agree with any of them on most issues) the fact that Cheney made an unfortunate mistake while hunting quayle doesn't make their views on the war in Iraq, social security, taxes, or wiretapping any more or less right.

I hope this was a typo, I fear it was not.:)

Who cares, really. If it wouldnt have involved the VP, this would have never been an issue. Things like this happen everyday. Some people simply make mistakes, it just so happened it was the VP.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. I heard reporters asking if Cheney "planned to resign..."

Eh ?

The media are such bozos. Give me a break.

I was joking. Geez
Me, too, Houndog. I didn't know this was so serious. I mean, if a democrat would have done this, then it would have been funny. Hope no one saw Jon Stewart tonight, he was at his funniest best.

Well admittedly I was shocked:eek: to hear one of our fearless leaders about took someones head off with a shotgun! Come on gentlemen there is no excuse-period. We're taught safety first before pulling that trigger. I could not imagine doing that to one of my sons who I hunt with every duck and geese season. It is appauling pure and simple. Those that excuse him definately is/are not the person(s) I want by me in the field.
good day.

At least it wasn't with Kerry, that SOB would be crawling between "decoys" wit a 10 gauge slug for the quils...

Hey Pipo, at least I was consistent. And I did say I wasn't a quail hunter. Don't hunt quayle either.:) Actually I was using the English spelling.:D

So I guess given the higher standards the moderators have recently introduced, I'm now on probation.;)

I wonder if Cheney really does hunt quail as often as some say, and still not have a proper license????? got to wonder.

It seems to me that it is not the democrate gwb/cheney blasters who are nearly as pointed as are "the gwb regardless-radical right" excuse makers. A poster points out a fact and some gwb radical jumps on it with a political twist in an effort to excuse the act.

007 has it right, its a blatent act of carelessness.:D

WHAT ABOUT THAT ACCIDENT REPORT FILLED OUT ON A MACHINE????
I would like to see the one filled out in the field, or perhaps there was none.:D

At least he wasn't hunting with Claudine Longet.

Jeff Cooper

1. All guns are always loaded!

2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy!

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target!

4. Always be sure of your target!

The National Rifle Association has rendered them into just THREE1 basic "always keep" rules...

A. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

B. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

C. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

Maybe the lawyer was in the 'wrong' place - but someone pulls the trigger with a sight picture.
