Cartridge Quiz

Looks like some kind of 45 cal magnum with a Speer 405gr bullet?

Guv,

You were close on IDing that bullet.
Its a 405 gr Remington designed for a 45/70.
I used it in my beginning reload work-ups for my 458WM.
Never shot anything but paper with it.

Here's a look at the final 2 resulting loads:

Here's a pic of the result from those 2 after a few years of load development:

50 yards with iron sights - 2 shots 1/16" CTC
One shot each - a 450 Barnes FN solid and a 450 Swift "A"

Ray,
That 308 gave the 458 an overly long appearance, to me, fun quiz.:)
Great shooting!
I have a 444 3 shot target not quite so nice done at 100yds. Those big boys punch some nice clover leaves!

Reviewing it could be the more the 458 just looked longer,
as several guessed 458 Lott.
That rifle has a long throat.
As you can see I began loading the 405 gr bullet to the longer 2nd crimp position, thinking it would help both accuracy and case volume.
Turns out the COAL for those loads and that rifle
wasn't an important factor in accuracy like it could be in another situation.
Which was good for me - I could concentrate on getting those 2 reloads to shoot to the same POI at 50 yds.

PS: Glad you enjoyed it. I had fun, too, being on the other side.

Yep, the perspective and lighting make the .458 look like it has the Lott's 2.800" case length (and .308-family's COAL), rather than the 2.5" WM's.
Threw me off a bit.

I was beginning to think the 308 was some new 8mm or 338 short action cartridge
Hard to keep up these days.

OK, big al has a picture of
44 Rem Mag
308 Win
454 Cassull or however you spell the ting

My guesses:
Since Scorch took the .30s, I'll go with 7mms...

.44 Rem Mag
7mm-08
.454 Casull
.243 Win
.45 Colt
7mm Rem Mag

Sorry for the late response. Been busy. Frankenmauser has it.
44 REM mag
7-08
454
243
45 Colt
And 7mm rem mag
Can't slip much past him.

Woohoo!

I may be out of good, loaded cartridges for this. If no one else has something to post, I may have to dig up empty cases.

Though I've been looking everywhere possible, I can't find my 9.3x54R. So don't worry about that freak showing up. ;)

Guy's I find nothing more!

I had a real good one from some years ago - Was both hard and tricky.

I can't find it anywhere. So I'm no help.

I'll try to put one together soon should I get another chance to post pic.
