Cartridge Quiz

#8 44-40 (I thought that one would catch people, guess I was wrong)
The typical .44s seemed too obvious, and I was a little bit stumped until I noticed the faint shoulder.
But that shoulder is the give-away.

As for #4 through #6, I was way off. #4 is not what I was thinking for .30-30.
My sense of scale was off.

That being unintentionally revealed, I think Pathfinder is on the right track, with .32 Rem (#3), .348 Win (#5), and .356 Win (#6).

And, I think #2 is .250-3000. (Ah, I see Pathfinder already guessed that.)

This is a fun thread. Nothing to argue about as the cartridges are what they are, whether we can guess correctly or not. That was a good one on the 44-40; I almost thought 45 Colt, but the rim is too pronounced for that.

Not a 32 Remington.
Not 44 Mag.
Not a 358 Win.

Getting close!

So we have
25-20
250 Savage
Unknown
30-30
33 Winchester (Congratulations on that one!)
348 Winchester (Ditto)
Unknown
44-40
45-70

I need to learn to read gooder. ;)

I really enjoy stuff like this, as well. (Probably evident, since I've checked this thread about six times today.)

What I like the most is when everything is an oddball or obsolete, and there's no common reference point with which to judge dimensions and proportions.

All I've got left for #3 is .30 Remington.

Perhaps it's just the photograph. It looks .32 caliber or larger. But with .32 Rem ruled out, .30 Rem is the next logical choice. The shoulder still doesn't look right, though...

Here's another.

Some are wildcats, but not uncommon.
One is obscure enough that I'll give it to you just for the parent cartridge. (But if you know me, you may have heard about it. ;))
One could be viewed as a trick.

I realize now that I probably should have only done six, but there are 11 here.

You got it, 30 Remington. It looks larger than the 30-30 right next to it, that's because the 30-30 bullet has been pushed back in the case a bit due to repeated action testing.

OK, just a matter of time before somebody guesses it. #6 is 35 Remington.

I could do several more with oddball and/or obsolete cartridges. I have about 2 dozen more cartridges just in my shop that would try even the most devoted cartridge collector.

Oooh! Pretty!

OK, let's see
338 RCM
30-06 AI
475 Linebaugh?
444 Marlin
44 Remington Mag Hot-Shot
307 Winchester
45-70
30-30 Winchester
577-455
454 Cassull
6mm-223?

Nicely done, Scorch.
A few incorrect, but nice score, overall. 7/11.

Indeed, RoughRider. One of them is.

--1. Not an RCM.
2. .30-06 AI.
--3. Not .475 Linebaugh.
4. .444 Marlin
5. .44 Rem Mag Thompson Center "Hot Shot"
6. .307 Win

--7. Not .45-70 (the rim isn't pronounced enough).
8. .30-30.
9. .577-450 Martini Henry.

--10. Not .454 Casull.
11. 6x45mm / 6mm-223.

#7 does not represent a standard type of load for the cartridge.

And, sorry about the photo. It looked a lot better in person and on the camera. But by the time I saw it on the computer screen, I had already put everything away.

That would be correct.

4. .444 Marlin
5. .44 Rem Mag Thompson Center "Hot Shot"
6. .307 Win

--7. *****.
8. .30-30.
9. .577-450 Martini Henry.

--10. *****.

Frankenmauser...

#1 looks a bit like a 338 Hulk or 338 Norma Mag Improved
#7 I agree with Pathfinder, it looks like a 405 Winchester.
#10 looks like a 480 Ruger.

Jimro

2. .30-06 AI
3. .475 Tremor
4. .444 Marlin
5. .44 Rem Mag Thompson Center "Hot Shot"
6. .307 Win
7. .444 Marlin
8. .30-30.
9. .577-450 Martini Henry
10. .480 Ruger
11. 6x45mm / 6mm-223

I'll give a little while longer on #1, but it may not be guessed. It's a factory cartridge, but quite unpopular and no longer chambered even by the company that released it.
Hint: Bullet diameter is larger than .338".
