Carry at Home

Whether a bunch of cops on some Internet board carry at home has no bearing on whether or not it's a good idea. Besides, the only 2 boards I'm on with high cop ratios, I'd counter-bet you that nearly all of them do carry at home. (I mean the ones that are also members there, I am not extrapolating this out to all cops.) This also is no argument one way or another, it makes no difference.

As for my point, it's already been covered elsewhere in the thread so there's no sense repeating.

I sometimes carry at home, but most of the time there is always something close by. I am a firm believer in " It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it" ;)

my castle

after my security system, and my dogs I have more guns hidden around the house then furniture. better make sure it is hidden though. how embarrassing for an unarmed bad guy to enter and shoot you with one of your own guns.

Exactly!, or someone else(kid or drunk buddy) to get ahold of a loose gun and have an accidental shooting!

"I should add that if you worry about attacks in your own home, good locks and good lights and good neighbors and a good dog will do more to dissuade criminals than a gun in the pocket of your bathrobe. "

They're not mutually exclusive. We do keep outside lights on and lock the house assiduously. Dog? We rent, and having a dog makes it much harder to find a place. Would love to have one. The gun on my person at home is in addition to, not instead of, normal security precautions.

I carry at home because you just don't know if there are BG's or robbers that may break-in. I also love carrying my pistol wherever I go that I feel I need to bring it with me. My pistol is a part of my body.

Not sure what your point is, but go on a cop board and ask how many of them carry in their house.
Interesting comment. One of the reasons I actually began giving home carry some level of consideration was because one of my LE friends (now a retired State Trooper) is rabid about it. He doesn't carry at home but has guns strategically stashed around the house so that he's always close to one. He also keeps a large dog that is protection trained inside as well.

I figured he must know what he was talking about...

Once I started really thinking about it, it just made sense. Not because the risk is high but because if the unlikely happened the cost of being unprepared would be unthinkable.

""Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery."
Or at least see he pulls back a stump.:D

Who, why and what do you carry at home / house?

I carry my 1911 at home just like I carry anywere else. I just don't make a conscious effort to conceal it in my home.
Why? Well, I prefer to be prepared for those unlikely situations.

I'm a retired old coot who lives alone with my cat. Old coots are prime targets for bg's and dopeheads (is there a difference?) and there is a low rent apartment complex a block away, I feel I have an increased probability of home invasion, robbery , burglary or just plain old attack. Since my cat doesn't seem to mind, unlike both ex wifes, I stay in my skivvies all day so carrying on my person is impractical. My current carry gun, always some form of a 1911, is always close at hand, if I move to another part of the house, it goes with me but regardless of where I am located in the house, the pistol is always in the same, quick access, location so I don't have to look around to find it. When I go out of the house, laws require that I have britches on and common courtesy requires britches when I answer the door, Then Mr.Thunderstick goes on with the britches.

Like you, I stay in my skivvies most of the time. But since I'm a cowboy shooter, I wear a double holster rig with two Colt Peacemakers, well, Colt Copies anyway. I even wear them to bed but the wife says they are a little cold when I turn the wrong way. If I remain flat on my back, everything works fine. I'm ready for gun play and a moments notice.

Most of the time I don't carry at home quiet neighborhood. lately haveing some vandlism going on. More door to door sales men for some reason. Area could be changing with more strangers strolling about. Will have to reconsider preparedness. So sad.
