Carbine, it’s ammo, What do you have, use, and Why...

I’m seriously thinking of getting myself a carbine… again. Last one I owned was back in the ‘70s. .30 semi auto. I forget the name brand Probably a Sears or something like that.

Oh, you are talking about a M-1 carbine. I got lost in all the replys and forgot what the OP had posted. Yes, I had one of those (Sears) and they are fun to shoot but not a very effective caliber compared to some of todays 223/5.56s. If you are looking for a peice of history or a conversation starter, yes get one, if it is for serious self-defense, no don't.

Just to clear the air, a "carbine" is any weapon with a barrel lenght of less than 20 inches. Any weapon with a barrel lenght of 20 inches or longer is a "rifle".

You need to be a little clearer on your post's title. My Marlin 336C (35 Remington) is a carbine as is my Mini-30 (7.62x39), 16 inch AR-15 (5.56) and Remington 7600 (30-06).

Best of luck and have fun with your new carbine (M-1).

Jim

Anyone still making an M1 style carbine in .40 or .45

My Carbines and why:

BCM 5.56 - because it only cost me <$200 for a $1K rifle...
AK74 5.45 - because I hoarded crate loads of 5.45 ammo...
AK47 x39 - because it's 7.62x39mm...
M44 x54r - because everyone should have one...
10|22 .22lr - same as above...

The truly sad part about this thread....NOBODY has mentioned the Calico line of carbines yet...

100-rds per mag trumps everything out there. Period.

50 or 100 rd mags are your choices...interchangable between pistol & carbine...

What about a Circuit Judge in 45 colt and .410? It has 5 shots with an 18.5 inch barrel. They are decently accurate and with .45 they aren't much louder than a .22lr.

I haven't tried one yet, but what about one of those lever action guns with a short barrel and practically no stock that's sold as a pistol? Seems like they could be alot of fun. There's even holsters for those guns.

If you're willing to either get a custom barrel made or deal with getting a SBR legal, the poly Jericho 941/Baby Eagle guns can be converted to have a stock and a forward grip even.

The AK pistols are really nice in my opinion. The Draco is quite reliable, or if that's to big try a Mini Draco. The guns come with two 30 round mags. If you want more ammo, a 75 round drum is available. But shooting one handed with a loaded drum gets rough.

1) Lee Enfield #5 "Jungle Carbine".

The ammo is reloaded Prvi Partizan, and with only neck-sizing, the brass can be reused about ten times.
The main limitation is that a specific group of used brass often will only rechamber in the same Enfield in which it was first used.

2) The Spanish FR8 has a slightly tighter trigger, but is just as fun, using reloaded .308. The action is the large ring 8mm Mauser:
don't confuse it (as many do) with the FR7- it's a totally different rifle, with the much weaker, small ring 7mm Mauser action.

3) SKS: Wolf ammo.
Why have these? Classic military character versus the toolbox character of ARs. The OP asked the question.

Ok so here are a couple things that have not been mentioned throughout the thread that may help/and or upset people. it really depends on your use. The 5.56/.223 can be more or less uneffective/undereffective within 100 yards. there is a yaw period where the bullet is so fast that it can neary punch a hole through the bg. These rounds are meant to tumble or fragment that causes the greatest damage. Within this distance there have been cases of the round only making a .223 hole through the bg similar to a .22lr. Not exactly a bad thing you are still hitting the bg but it could be the same stopping power of a .22. Now this is not all the time but significantly enough to make you want to consider. The Barretta does also come in a .45 and uses the handgun magazines. A

*Another option to consider "could" be the AR 5.7 it uses a standard AR milspec lower, holds 50 rounds, is affordable and uses the controversial 5.7x28 now some people love this round and others hate it. personally i dont know what to think so research it yourself. What i can tell you is that it is a similar design to the 5.56, kind of, but smaller, however within 100 yards it does not have the same problem yaw period where the round "will" tumble and fragment which is good and why it is called a pdw. Depending on how much you may want to spend you could also consider the h&k usc in a .45 or a Kriss super v in a .45. Every thing everyone said is valid and viable options. im just trying to give you a little more options and things to consider.

5.7? Fired one of those not long ago...

... but in an FNH pistol. Not a rifle.

those are some strange looking bullets. One could use them for Golf tees.

Kris Super V in 45? Not only YES, but Heck YES if that's the FA model. Wow. Only gun I'd opt for over the HK 416.

I believe I've figured it all out.. thanks to the input i've gotten mostly here and a bit elsewhere... and deflating my ego a good bit.

I should know by this weekend which way I'll go. it'll be easy to take down, have plenty of stopping power, range, and capacity. Just ain't sure which flavor.

If however that all falls thru... I'll stop. Buy the CX4 and glue a few inches of plywood & carpeting or an old pair of sneakers onto the butt stock and be done with things.. Sorry but it's a pretty short stock on the back end. Even looks like it ain't supposed to be run on a shoulder, but down and away from the shoulder and close into the body. With an Aimpoint perhaps just under the arm.

The Kris SV? you afix that to a roving robot with GPS and cameras, and shoot from well, Burger King or the Drive in. hahahah
