Carbine for Home Defense

Had that been his daughter stealing drugs then he would have been thankful it wasn't buckshot, he only wounded her.

I'm more of a "Identify your target before you shoot" guy myself; but the whole "Shoot them with something only mildly lethal and mostly disfiguring, just in case it is someone you know" method of target discrimination is a novel approach. ;)

carbine v. shotgun

The shotgun is not for everybody. Consider........

-recoil is stiff for many folks. I've seen female LE recruits reduced to tears
-shotguns are heavy, 20" bbl, mag extension, weight starts to get up there to
where some folks consider them a handful
-a fairly complex manual of arms:slide release, safety, slide action. I've seen
more than one LEO who should have been comfortable with a shotgun, loading, clearing, making ready, ........fairly confused.
-limited range , barrier penetration, and ammo capacity

A carbine solves all the above. Note.......
-recoil is notta
-an M1 or Mini14 weighs very little compared to an all up shotgun
-manual of arms similar to auto pistols.
-more range, penetration and hi-cap

Lol..I gota say this..the answer is so obvious..not realistic of course but something that must be said...m4 with a master key..hahaha...

i use land mines in my home. im the only one there and i know where to step. i dont need guns for home defense

Any good firearm will work for home defense if the user practices with his choice frequently and until he can load, unload and use it in the dark. The key is lots and lots of practice. Once you're golden with your primary firearm, start practicing with your back-up firearm. A good defense plan has layers to it just in case the main gun breaks or jams.

So, using a carbine for home defense? Okay but also have a decent handgun to also bring to bear when needed. And back-up both handguns with a decent knife too. If you get a drug crazed murderer inside the walls of your home, he may keep going until you stick your blade into the point of his head. You can never underestimate a hostile opponent hopped up on drugs.

pistol caliber carbines are great, no arguement there from me. shotguns are devastating and the spread from a short, cylinder bore barrel has advantages (and disadvantages). i personally, if i was considering spending the $$ you are, would get a good pump 12 gauge (used for 100 bux) AND a ruger mini 14. the mini is .223 which is a proven good choice to reduce the chance of overpenetration. the mini has a fantastic rep for reliability, is very inexpensive(esp. used) and with a 30 round mag, will serve you well in a CQC situation. my answer: get both !

Speedjerry, I did some of the original testing of 5.56 vs. 9mm on interior walls a long time ago. Fired from 10 feet into two sides of sheetrock, separated by 2 X 4, 10' beyond another identical wall, 10' beyond that was a wall, one side sheetrock, one side T10 siding.

All 9mm rounds from a handgun went through all walls. 5.56/223 rounds all went through the first wall, some made it through the 2nd wall, none made it through the last wall. This included 5.56 green tip AP, fired from a Styer AUG. (9mm was the only round I tested, it was fired from a BHP)

The 9mm rounds penetrate by mass, the 5.56/.223 by velocity. Rounds loose velocity on impact, not mass.

And, as noted your particular living situation defines what may be best. I have a two MILE field of fire .... err, field of view, so I can use my full auto BAR if the situation calls for it.

Bedroom long gun - M4gery w/55g JHP

If outdoors, Win M94 in .44Mag - Why? puts down coyotes, if needed against an outlaw, "sells" much better in court than the M4 to solve "problem 2". Both get exercised regularly, along with our handguns.

Indeed, this is like asking what's the best vehicle to buy for hunting, answer depends on if you hunt mountains, dessert, or swamps!
:D

There are more advantages of a shotgun for home defense than just cost. Penetration comes to mind as the most important aspect over a carbine specially a 223. The very last thing I want in my home with my family present is a gun fight and would avoid that situation at all cost. I would allow someone who has broken into my home to leave even with my personal property to avoid gun fire. If someone unlawfully enters my home with thoughts beyond theft and lethal force is the only way out a shotgun would be the best choice with the least chance of over penetrating through several walls
