Calling All Old Farts

don't know that I care to be called an old fart ... but while I have to wear glasses to drive and read, I seem to be able to focus on both the sights and the target if I need to ... strange thing ... I had an eye exam a month ago and the doctor said my eyes are getting better ... now if only the news would spread south ... party time!

Kudos on the cane idea

However, I think a shotgun would be easier. For me, it was a trip to lens crafters and a new set of glasses

I agree with the cane idea

Just go with the CT laser for your handgun, just bought the wife a new set of glasses. The CT laser is cheaper. No worry about where your glasses are or if they are reading or driving just put the dot were you want the bullet to go and pull the trigger. As my wife always says KISS OFF (Keep It Simple Stupid) I think she was talking about me. And yes I carry a Medicare Card so I qualify as an old fart.

Have fun and stay safe.

My eyesight is fading quickly.I wear standard bi-focals and sight thru the top.Everything is less clear but I'm still able to shoot respectable groups.I'm painting most front sights orange these days, even on rifles.YMMV.tom.

Makes Me Feel Good

Just to know I'm not the only "Old Fart" still trying my best to hit the
darn target. Great to see all the response, "hang in there Boy's".:D

I used to shoot a pistol league at an indoor range here. There was a senior gentleman of 72 years of age.As I recall, the first part of his last name was Fitz. Now,he did have some Camp Perry history, but at his age, iron sights,he was knocking off 297 scores with a lot of XXX's ,slow timed, and rapid.

He was a gentleman, too!! He noticed my Hi-Standard GD and complimented it!! One of my little treasures, shooting with that man.

Wish I had a solution because I have the same problems. Damn I miss my fighter pilot eagle eye sight. I try to get more visible sights like Williams fire sights and mostly get my enjoyment out of the bang and recoil :p :)

I had an old veteran tell me the way to shoot is not to use the sights like all the uber accurate dudes do in the movies. Hold the pistol about chest height and kind of line the barrel to the target. I tried it with my co2 pistol in my backyard and I think with practice the results might be surprising.

Hello gentlemen.
I am only 70 years. With iron sights, pistols and revolvers , I use very cheep + 1 reading glases if the target is small. For my better right eye it is too much, the small target is cloudet, but left yey everything is ok.
With my funny rifle, 9,3x57 Mauser I don´t need glases to 100m "bigger than cat"-targets.
With orher rifles and T/C Contender pistols I have scopes.

2 pages on this thread and I am surprised nobody has posted this yet ,,,

There are fairly inexspensive tools for tired old eyes like ours that are made especially for this . I believe midway and Brownells carry these . One is a suction cup / stick on the lens diopter much like what is on the right eye cup of binoculars but smaller and lighter made by Lyman called the Hawkeye Shooters' Diopter Optic Aid. The other is a complete glasses set with flip down lenses and a diopter but offers 4 different apertures , right and left flip down capabilities and side shades called Hyskore Pro Optic Aid Kit . The latter has had a couple of good reviews by some shooting editors. Either one of these items is under $25.00:cool:  now if i can just find my cane and my pistol ,,,

Most folks are right handed and left eye dominant.

I would be very surprised if this was correct, but I have been surprised many times in the past...

I would guess, based on my limited sampling of life in the military, most are right/right...

More than happy to be corrected if anyone can point me to a reference.

Yep I got to where the rear sight was very blurry so I taught myself to shoot with the front site only.
Took some time and ammo but after all said and done I am more accurate and faster on target than I ever was even with my 44mag with the 10.5 bull barrel.

I would have guessed the same, but the poster that said this has 20 years in Opthalmology, so I guess I'd have to defer to his experience, leastwise til somebody convinces me with further proof.

You mean I'm normal???;)

It was DocMac324 who said the bit about cross dominance. I have not heard that before. I had read that cross dominance was limited to about 20% of the population, more or less. I've personally observed it to be about that rare and on the boards it seems so as well. So I'm sticking with it being a bit rare till the Doc can cite a reference otherwise. Easy enough to check for yourself on yourself.

PlayboyPenguin said: I am only 42 years old and I have 20/15 vision (went to the eye-doc for the first time in 20 years just the other day)....but I am starting to have trouble seeing anything that gets closer than a foot from my face.

That's how it begins, whippersnapper! I'm a retired naval aviator and started out with 20/10 vision. Didn't bother with binoculars because they just fuzzed things up. Then one day while serving ashore on a staff, I looked up from a paper I was reading and it took about a minute before I could focus on anything else. First half-shell reading glasses and then, sigh, bifocals.

I am now 77. Without my glasses, I cannot even SEE the iron sights on my handguns, three of which have Crimson Trace grips. I would not buy any handgun that CT did not make grips for. I practice weekly for HD/SD at my range, 5-10 yards, fifty rounds iron sights (glasses on) and fifty with lasers (often with glasses off). There is no question which way I am more effective. Does that red dot dance all over the place? You betcha. Do I get most of my shots within the nine ring of a lifesize silhouette target? You betcha. Am I slower? You betcha, but I think I can handle that.

Making no accusations, but there is an elephant in the room when laser sights are discussed. How many have tried them and were so shocked at how much that red dot wandered that they went into aggressive denial? That's YOU doing it fella, not the laser.

Cordially, Jack

The problem with special lenses for shooting is that most of us won't be wearing them for concealed carry.

JN01 mentioned the Big Dot XS sights. I had them on a gun that I later returned to the maker, but I really liked the sights. Very easy for these "old fart" eyes to acquire.

I plan on retrofitting at least one of my existing guns and ordering them on my future guns, as budget allows.

I also got the Decots HiWyds for the range. One pair for handguns and one for rifles. When I carry I depend on my progressive glasses. I'm 61 now and soon will be developing cataracts. At that time I'll be looking forward to some bionic eyes.:D

long arms

I am 64 and have been blessed in that I have not had this problem yet ... or at least don't think I have .... had lasik about 12 years ago and my distance vision is still pretty good .... so, as long as I hold my pistol with my arm fully out I still can make out both sights and the target OK ....

tried the laser sights and agree with those that said it is really frustrating to see how shaking I am any more....... I really don't like seeing that thing moving about .... even if it is only an inch or so .......
