Calling All Old Farts

I've just assigned all my self-defense duties to my brand-new Kill-All Model 42. It's a fragmentation grenade with a pistol grip and trigger. Can't miss! I can't say I've tried it out yet, though.

after eye surgeries for cateracts and detached retinas in both eyes, i am still able to keep 80% in a 3" group at 20 to 25 feet............my S&W 686-4 does most of the work

Cataracts didn't do much for improving eye sight but after two surgeries I am good as new with a new set of progressive glasses 20/20.

I once went to Walmart Optical department to get some "progressive" bifocals or whatever and they sucked major and I am still wearing my scratched up ten year old thick mono focals today. I can still hit a target. But a scope makes it easier, though I only own one scope right now. Mostly milsurps instead of sporters and I can't afford most sniper scoped mils.

I turn 42 this year so I wouldn't say I'm an "old fart", though some at work may disagree:p This year the eye doc told me this was my last correction before going to bifocals. I noticed the additional loss when I started having to take my glasses off to read:o

When my Springfield GI arrived with the small combat sights, I was shocked that I couldn't see them. A gunsmith put taller sights on for me.

For some handguns, I have to wear my tri-focal progressives, but I am only now getting used to them. Yes, presbyopia is aggravating after having had good near and far sight all my life.

Developing Cataracts means that I have to use a 1-4x scope on my rifles to see the bullseye of the target at 100 yards.

Life is good, so I can put up with these age-related hassles.

Actually, I prefer the term "greybeard"

My vision has been sliding downhill since my early 40's (just shy of 20 years ago). I got a set of progressive trifocals and try to keep the front sight in focus - or maybe just beyond. With a m60 or m39 I can keep most shots in an area that I can cover with my palm at 7-8 yds. Just not as good as my 20/15 vision before my beard began to turn...

I can see the front sight clearly -- without my glasses. But, without my glasses the target just sort of disappears. I can see the target clearly -- with my glasses. But, when I wear my glasses, the front sight turns into a fuzzy blur. That, despite several trips to the opthalmologist plus progressive lenses. My problem is compounded by the fact that I'm cross-dominant. I'm right handed but my dominant eye is my left eye. And, my left eye happens to have weaker distance vision than my right eye.

The consequence of all of these problems is that I am an accurate shot at distances up to 15 yards, so-so at 20, and not very good at 25.

Bi-focals. The bottom lens is set for point of focus being my gunsights. Also works for a car dashboard, etc.

Another old fart here. But I still check out 20/13, though my up close and personal vision (arms are getting longer) is deteriorating at 52. Started at around 45. Seeing the sights on my guns is not yet affected, at least not at last range trip. I use 1.5 readers at the monitor, 2.0s that I keep in my pocket for reading crap in the stores. I consider myself lucky as I used to test 20/10, and all my friends started going this way when they turned 40. I got an extra 5 years out of the deal.

I'm getting ready to close my eyes and use the Force. However, until then - I'm going with progressives. As I shoot IDPA for fun and trigger time, I used my everyday glasses.

I don't get special glasses for shooting as I probably won't be wearing them when the Zombies attack and I'm not that into the high end techy competiton to worry about such. YMMV.

I use DeCot HyWyd in Phoenix for my shooting glasses / I have the same issues you do 20 / 350 vision, bifoculs, some other issues ... If you go with a progressive bifocul, you're lifting your head too much ...

DeCot made me a pair of lenses for shooting my handguns - so I can see the sight reasonably well / and see the target reasonably well - they put a little different focul length in my dominant eye vs non-dominant / and a bifocul in the bottom of the lens so I can still read, see up close when I look thru that window.

What's nice about having shooting glasses - with replaceable lenses - you can use one color lens indoors, different for shotgunning, hunting, etc / once you buy the frames / you can just order new lenses to be made up for different lenses.

nearly 50

Got a pair of prescription shooting glasses. My close vision sucks, but I opted for my shooting I really needed to be able to see clearly 15' and out. The new glasses work well...they are actually prescription sunglasses but I had the lenses tinted "canary yellow" so things aren't too dark. Still prefer shooting iron sights without my glasses, but I would rather hit my target accurately.

Old eyes.

On pistol I get a set of glasses that focus on the front sight as with the rifle.
Yep. That's what I do. Right lense is set for the sights and the left is a plano.
The other solution is to use an adjustable aperture that attaches to your glasses. Merit makes a nice, handy one as does Gehmann.
I also use some old contacts that used to work for reading but now are too weak. They just happen to bring that front sight into focus.
The target, when you are focused on the front sight, is never going to be in focus anyway so there's no need to worry about it as long as you can see the blur.

Another geezer checking in. I suggest that you obtain some Crimson Trace laser sights for your favorite weapon. They don't do anything for your vision problems, but they sure do improve accuracy with a weapon.
