Brands to stay away from??

Cannot go wrong with a fine gun like a Ruger..

Yes you can.

The SP 101 I had would lock up tighter than a drum in rapid double action fire. Three times it went back to Ruger to be fixed and three times it came back with the same problem. Needless to say I dumped it, so... SP101, never again, and I would take a long hard look at any other Ruger before I ever bought one again. (With the possible exception of the Standard and the 10/22.)

I stay away from everything except S&W, Colt, Ruger. and Springfield Armory. I do carry a KT P3AT daily.
That is a shorter list than naming the staying away froms.

I have found that second class guns are like the hosters that I throw in my junk drawer and never use. It is cheaper not to try too hard to save money. I guess I should add that Taurus guns are junk in my experience.

I mostly agree with the over $350 thing, but you could find a used ruger p95 for $300 and talk them up to $350:)

I'd stay away from Taurus and anything cheaper. I don't have any experience with them, but I can learn from other's mistakes. I don't buy the most expensive guns but I only buy from reputable manufactures.

Wow

A lot of hate directed toward the Taurus. Taurus has a lifetime guarentee, Smith & Wesson has a one year. Hmm just a notion. I own a S&W 9mm, and a Taurus .38. Both are fine examples of firearms. I own a Rossi .357 shot less than 100 times but does okay. Rohm is another brand that gets trashed but my .22 Rohm has had over 500 rounds fired through it since I bought it in 2004, they stopped importing them in 1968. Who knows maybe I got a good one.

So many people will try to sway you with stat lines and horror stories. The U.S. Govt. told G.I.s that the Japanse Rifles were under powered and no threat. Thousands of G.I.s in the Pacific theatre didn't come home from a no threat piece of junk.

Buy what you can afford, buy what you feel comfortable with, try different makes and models until you find the gun that feels right and you will be happy. BTW how is the Glock?

So my question would be - is there any certain brands of gun that I should NOT buy for reasons such as poor quality and so on?? I don't really have a strict budget.

Don't buy a Korth, they are intrigueing and with no strict budget, they might put you on a budget.

I am saving for my next.

Currently, I have 3 Ruger pistols. LCP, LC9, SR40, and a 1962 Blackhawk in .357 and they all work great. I would consider buying a Ruger product in a heartbeat! I also know that should any problem ever arrive, I know how to deal with it but I've never had to do any repairs whatsoever.

I can't find it anywhere on the Internet but I think Korth made a 9mm revolver at one time. Not just a 357 w/conversion cylinder but specifically a 9mm revolver.

Maybe they didn't - I really cannot track it down.

I think that it sums it up nicely. Everyone is coming from a different place in terms of finances, degree of interest, and dedication to the shooting arts.

Given time, practice, and exposure to various makes/models, a person will gravitate towards higher quality weapons over time if they are passionate about shooting.

Hey justagirl28,

You have to come back and give us your impressions of the Glock 19.

Like what do you think of the recoil?

Is it easy for you to cycle the slide?

Do the grips fit your hands? etc.. etc..

Damned with faint praise ....... my kids seldom put less than a 500andwhatever round bulk pack through my .22/45 every trip ......

Yeah, my S&W 18 usually gets 250-300 rounds through it when I take it to the range... rarely less; sometimes more. Since 2004? Probably more like 10,000 rounds...

Llama made the worst handgun I ever owned. The "Commanche" spit lead like crazy. It actually rattled if you shook it. I kept it for about 3 weeks or so....

In handguns I avoid Taurus, Bersa, Rossi, NAA, EAA, and Charter, off the top of my head.

I am the oft-accused gun snob you hear so much about! :)

Ruger is really the only budget oriented handgun brand I like. My family owns six or so and they're great.

I like to pay the premium for Beretta, Smith, Sig, Walther, HK, etc.

Whoever said Smith only stands behind their product a year is incorrect. Smith will take care of you if you're the third owner and it's 20 years later. Lifetime warranties don't mean much to me in goods I can't trust when it counts.

FYI

Hi again! Haven't been on here in forever. I did actually get a handgun...finally! I got a Glock 19. I haven't shot it a TON, but I've gotten plenty of practice with it and it's a lot of fun to shoot!

She got a G19 FYI.

So now you will now be responding to air.

She did her research, and she found a gun.

Not a bad choice.

Hi again! To answer the questions...after I got the hang of it, pulling the slide back wasn't too hard! I have pretty small hands so it fits my hand nicely since it's a pretty small gun. It's a lot of fun to shoot. I've gotten some good instruction. Never had any problems with it so far!

That's great, but instead of keep posting here, you should start a new post reporting how you like your new Glock 19, and what you like about it, and tell a litttle story on how you decided on this gun.
