There are many firearms I wouldn't buy based purely on reputation. I won't name them. One make I wouldn't buy based on actual hands-on exposure is the Hi-Point. Oh. My. I'm simply staggered at how poorly those guns are made.
But it is also true that any of the major manufacturers can crank out a real lemon. As stated waaaay back earlier, most reputable makers are eager to make good on a lemon. That's part of being "reputable." Same root as "reputation."
The key is to find some friends who can let you try out their guns or, that failing, find a gun shop that rents. When I first was getting into firearms, I actually lived in Washington, DC, where no one owned, or was interested in, guns, except the local disadvantaged youths. I researched a lot, went to the ranges that rented guns, and ended up joyously happy with a Springfield Armory 1911.
Your mileage may vary, as they say.
Oh, and stay the heck away from big-box stores. Sorry, but you want serious guidance and advice, and you won't get it there. Go to folks who know, love and sell firearms. Not tires, onesies, garden shrubbery, and Pringles.
