Brands to stay away from??

Did I say buy 2 guys?

Yup, ya did:p

That's interesting...basically 2 guns in 1? What is an example of a gun that will shoot both .22 and something more powerful?

1911A1, Beretta 92/96, Glock, Browning HiPower, Sig P series to name a few.

M&P and XD kits are alleged to be forthcoming

One way to narrow down your choices would be to decide what trigger system you like:

Single Action- does one thing: drops the trigger to fire the gun. Trigger pull is usually very short, and often pretty light. Available in auto pistols like the 1911 and revolvers like the colt Peacemaker. Hammer must be cocked manually before trigger is functional.

Double Action- pulling the trigger cocks the hammer, then drops it. Trigger pull is usually long and heavy. DA revolvers may be manually cocked, making them SA ..... most modern revolvers are DA.

Double Action Only- As above, but may not be manually cocked ...... DAO revolvers have the hammer spur removed or covered up, as in the S&W 638 . The Ruger LCP is an example of a DAO Auto pistol.

DA/SA- First shot is double action, subsequent shots SA.... The Berretta 92 is an example.

Striker fired auto pistol- has a safety lever on the trigger ..... usually a lighter and shorter pull than Double Actions ....... Glocks would be an example.

Listen to jimbob86.

There are many firearms I wouldn't buy based purely on reputation. I won't name them. One make I wouldn't buy based on actual hands-on exposure is the Hi-Point. Oh. My. I'm simply staggered at how poorly those guns are made.

But it is also true that any of the major manufacturers can crank out a real lemon. As stated waaaay back earlier, most reputable makers are eager to make good on a lemon. That's part of being "reputable." Same root as "reputation."

The key is to find some friends who can let you try out their guns or, that failing, find a gun shop that rents. When I first was getting into firearms, I actually lived in Washington, DC, where no one owned, or was interested in, guns, except the local disadvantaged youths. I researched a lot, went to the ranges that rented guns, and ended up joyously happy with a Springfield Armory 1911.

Your mileage may vary, as they say.

Oh, and stay the heck away from big-box stores. Sorry, but you want serious guidance and advice, and you won't get it there. Go to folks who know, love and sell firearms. Not tires, onesies, garden shrubbery, and Pringles.

Unfortunately, most gun stores push what they are having a hard time moving or what gives them the biggest margin. You NEVER walk into any gun store and ask what you should buy.

Unfortunately, most gun stores push what they are having a hard time moving ....

"most" being an important qualifyier in there ....... the trick for new shooters is to find a trustworthy person, be it dealer or mentor to help deal with dealers, that won't be trying to take advantage of them.

Keep in mind that TANSTAAFL ..... smaller shops that offer more personal service usually can't compete with the box store prices..... or they have to order what you think you want......

You can generally have 2 of these 3: Quality, Economy, Quantity...... "You can have it Good, Cheap or Now, pick Two."

If you are patient, and do your homework ..... you'll come out all right. You are here doing some homework, so that's a good sign.

Inferior Brands

I'll just go from personal experience and I have to say I never liked Beretta or Taurus, the latter's products being unreliable.
I have to say with Beretta it's probably that I just don't like the ergonomics, plus i ahd a firing pin break on a brand new Beretta once.
AMT made innovative designs and they're fun,if sometimes frustrating(jammamatic issues) to shoot, but don't ever rely on them for personal protection.
I'm referring to the original AMT out of Irwindale,CA as I have no experience with products from their successor who bought out the name.
I gotta say the AMT Automag II turns heads on the range with its loud report.Accurate though.

Like everyone's pointed out, you're not going the find an answer.

For those who swear at a Lorcin or a Raven or whatever, they'll be others who will say that their Lorcin or Raven was A OK. I had a Raven .25 and it was quite the little gun. Shot hundreds and hundreds of rounds through it without a single issue. So far that little gun has gone through two other people besides myself and it still functions like day one with the original magazine.

Well - I'm already set on not spending any less than about $350-400, so evidently that eliminates several of the guns discussed here. lol I don't want to go over $600.

Yes I have shot a .22 pistol. Couldn't remember what kind it was, but after calling and asking the person who convinced me to shoot it at their place, I learned it was a Ruger. It was fun to shoot.
