Best all around hand gun?

A .357 revolver in 3 or 4in barrel. My choice is ruger sp101, but that is, of course, is arguable. Revolver, ease of use, 357, powerful yet manageable, 3-4in concealable.

If u were going to be stuck with only one hand gun for everything from self defense in the city to alaska bear defense what would it be and why?
9mm - any flavor.
The gun itself isn't as crucial as the caliber.
I would probably lean heavily towards my Browning Hi Power.

Not too many years ago, my answer would have been:
.357magnum - any flavor.

What's changed in the last few years has been the general cost and availability of inexpensive practice ammo.
Not that is's dried up - but - the selection of and availibility of, .38 spl ammo isn't what it used to be.
OTOH - inexpensive and decent quality 9mm ammo is generally available.

Re: bears.
1.) It's too early for bear threads. Yogi and company are all still asleep. Why this sudden rush of bear threads? The bear threads don't usually start until summer (vacation time).
2.) Thank GOD I haven't had to read another bell post....I'm sure THAT will come later though...

Re: rehashing the same old same old....
See my first comment...things change...

I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination but I think if I wanted something to protect against everything from 2 legs to an 800# Grizz I'd go with the tried and true 1911. Perfectly adequate for anything up to that Grizz and in that case I'd wait for him to get close and then when he's standing over me doing that open mouthed floppy lipped roar thingy all the movie grizzlies do, I'd shove the whole mess in his mouth up against his upper palate, squeeze like a wild man, and hope for the best. Or just stay the hell out of grizzly territory when only armed with a hand gun. :)

... and now you're 1911 is out of battery, and won't fire. Looks like you're Mr. Bears dinner. ;)

Did you see the size of the paw and the claws on the bear in my picture? He is not going to use his mouth untill you become tenderized. He will separate your upper body from your lower body with a long reaching swat.

I am not sure a .45 is going to slow him down until he starts digesting dinner. This big guy was taking down horses.

I understand the question but . . .

How can there be any such thing as a best all round hand gun? It all depends on what you are using the gun for. It's like asking what is the best all round hand tool. Well, are you building a house or cutting brush. Hammer can't do what a machete does.

But we all love to talk about it. If I had to walk into the world with only one hand gun . . . I'd have to know what kind of world it was?

Well, that was pretty much my point. I can't imagine a general carry hand gun that's going to make a grizzly even blink. :D
