Best all around hand gun?

Someone sent me this recently with several pictures. So, I would have to find a real hand cannon if I lived in Alberta vs. Alabama. Here is the story and only one of the pictures:

Big Bear shot Saddle Hills Alberta , Sept 20/2010
These two gents were calling elk in the Saddle Hills south of Woking when this big guy slipped in on the caller the
Shooter spotted the bear 8 yards from the caller and dropped him with 5 shots out of his 338 Rem Mag..
Farmers in the area knew about the Bear but weren't able to track after it had killed 3 horses, 5 cows, 13 sheep and a pen full of chickens on several different homesteads in the area.
Fish and wildlife had bear traps set up in the area but noticed on surveillance video that when ever a he would enter his hump would hit the top of the culvert trap slowing him enough that the trap door would wack him on the head before he was all the way in check out the scar tissue on his face.....
Bear weighed in just under 1300 pounds and would have stood 11 ¾ feet tall on its hind legs.....

I know there is no such thing as best for anything, there is only opinions. The reason i asked is to get different opinions, maby some of you will teach me something i havent thought about. And i asked because i want to have good all around guns instead of having different guns for everything. And i thought it was a interesting question.

Seeing as your name is Alabama and the likelihood of travelling to Alaska with a firearm is pretty slim, maybe we could whittle down the requirements a bit?

There's a whole galaxy of firearms on the market, not one of them is suitable for everything.

Posts: 12 Best all around hand gun?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If u were going to be stuck with only one hand gun for everything from self defense in the city to alaska bear defense what would it be and why?

Kind of a tricky question....My XD-45 or Glock 21SF would be the last handguns I would part with, but I'd be "under-gunned" slightly vs a griz. On the other hand, a large caliber N frame revolver may be "over-gunned" for self defense vs 2 legged varmits. Said another way, one has not enough penetration while the other has too much.

I think the application of gun & caliber differs too much between your two scenarios.

My first thought was my GP-100 4" but with Bears in the equation I believe my 7.5" Vaquero in 45 Colt would be a bit more effective. Plus I could go riding in to town with a big cowboy hat and long colt on my hip. Works on those long legged creatures as well. :D

IF you had to choose the best all around vehicle, from hauling a cord of wood to formula 1 racing, what would it be?

Makes as much sense to me.

The best all around handgun, is the one you can shoot the best (most accurate, fastest). Everything else comes in below that. A .44mag you can't hit a barn with isn't better than a .32acp that you can hit with, and have on you when you actually need it.

Easy... Ruger Alaskan in .454 with the cylinder faced off to accept .45 ACP in moon clips.

# Ruger

# SP101 .38 Spl/357 & .32 Fed. Mag, GP100 .38 Spl/357 & .32 Fed. Mag, Security & Speed -Six, .38/.357, Redhawk & Super Redhawk, .44, .45LC, .454, .480,
# *The .454 conversion can allow you to shoot .45acp, .45LC and .454 Casull in a single conversion.

Hmmmm any gun? If I wasn't worried about bystanders it'd be a bfr in 45/70. But since its the real world prolly a g21sf with the 50 gi conversion.

We all know one gun can't fit all roles, but in the spirit of this thread that's supposed to be a fun thread I'll play.

I've only got 15 handguns in my collection right now, but out of those I'll go with my SIG P229 .40 S&W. If I had to choose just one gun I'd have to first determine my main reason for owning firearms. For me that's self defense. I CCW and the SIG is the biggest gun I feel I can carry comfortably in any attire. SIG makes a quality firearm, and .40 is of sufficient size while still allowing good capacity.

There are those out there that would like to see us limited to owning only one gun. Who knows. Some day we may have to make this choice.

The question about hauling wood and formula 1 racing my choice would be the new ford f 150 raptor. Its a 500 horse power 4 x 4 that comes with 35s and lockers. And yes i know its hard to have one hand gun that can do everything. Some are not perfect at anything but they can do most things good enough. Alot of the replys have been good choices in my opinion. And i hope it never happens but anything is possible one day we may have to decide. If u watched cnn after the shootings in Arizona u would have seen people talking about banning handguns or only having one handgun per house hold. Lets hope it never happens and do anything we can to prevent it. This thread was mostly for fun not to offend anyone.

Certainly not ideal for the big bears of Alaska, but 13+1 rounds of 180g .40 will handle most situations requiring a handgun.

Another relatively "easy." S&W 29/629 3" Mountain Gun - and shoot .44 Specials in it 3/4 of the time (range, SD, lower latitudes trail tromping)...clean it out, stoke it up with mags and make one trip back to the range to refamiliarize for the hopefully "uneventful" adventure to the northern woods.
